This time, my partner and I ordered chicken taquitos, tequila shrimp tacos, steak chimichangas, plus free chips & salsa - TASTE: 4/5 - the queso and crema fresca in the taquitos are soo good, and I liked the marinade and red cabbage in my tacos. Most dishes come w rice and refried black beans, which are both a great, subtle complement to the entree. I wish the free salsa was a little spicier, but love how fresh it tastes TEXTURE: 4/5 - the taquitos are perfectly crunchy, one of the reasons why I always get this app! Quality decline has been significant. Note: My initial review was pre-COVID. I know all restaurants have had to make cutbacks in order to endure the pandemic and economic turbulence. I acknowledge and understand that. I have gone back to Cielo's multiple times with different people and ordered takeout as well. The prices have gone up, portion sizes gone down, and overall food quality is now "meh". Not bad but not particularly good either. It's a bit small in the restaurant so I was seated in the middle aisle. In the middle aisle there's a small table and two seats across from one another. No place to hang a bag or heavy coat. Very uncomfortable if you're going in the winter time. They gave chips and salsa, both were bland. I ordered calamari-- you can't really mess that up. But even that was bland. Then I ordered fish tacos with a side of guacamole. The waiter asked if I wanted the fish fried or not. I requested for it to be fried. I kid you not-- the fish that came in the taco was like the rectangle shaped frozen fish sticks you get from Walmart for your kids. Literally gross. I looked at my husband like, they can't be serious... The only thing I liked was the guacamole, it was really flavorful. Everything else was gross. My husband and I both didn't finish our food and didn't take it to go. Not sure why so many people say the food is good here. It's not. read more

After that dumpster fire of an eating experience, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to learn that Cielo's kitchen had been overrun by a bunch of chihuahuas who'd drugged all the staff and commandeered the stove with their tiny paws. In fact, that would've been 1,000 times more enjoyable than eating the truly insanely bad slop served to me on a dirty plate last night. Let's start with the chips and salsa. Appreciate that they're free, but holy hell those chips are artificial-tasting and salted into the stratosphere. And the salsa was more like water with bits of tomato in it, like dipping chips into V8. But the real star of the show was the enchiladas tampiquenas. Wow, where to begin? Perhaps the low-quality chicken breast smashed so thin that I could practically see through it when I held it up to the light, smothered in some super-sweet sauce that I think was trying to fool the cool kids into thinking they're at Chipotle, maybe? Things continued downhill with the rice/mush brick (now that's how you cook rice, fellas, til it's just a ball of mush like that!) and the processed refried beans so pulverized out of their solid form that they literally dribbled across the plate like a broken egg yolk. I didn't even know that was possible! And oh God, then the enchiladas themselves. Oh, the clearest sign on the plate that the chef either was actively having a stroke while he or she prepared my dish or that they've simply given up on life. Three raw, hard tortillas wrapped around room-temperate unmelted cheese and literally drowned in a revolting pool of whatever jar of green sauce they're using and some "crema" that had already actively split on the plate. A veritable ocean of green and white agony that just screamed up at me tauntingly, "Aren't you so glad that you're paying for this?!" Unthinkable, unconscionable, inexcusable. I have no idea what y'all are thinking serving food like this with any ounce of pride. Rethink your choices, for the love of all that is holy, please. Maybe the drinks are good, who knows. P.S. To the people here saying that this is the best Mexican on the East Coast: Get f#cked. Travel. See the world. Life is precious and short. read more

As you can see, someone was sitting literally right next to me (black pants; to my left) and another person's chair was almost touching our table. Bueno! I've been here several times and never had a bad meal. Like most Mexican restaurants, they serve complimentary chips & salsa upon arrival. I also like to order the cheese dip to go with the tortilla chips. My go-to meal is the chicken tacos. The chicken is always juicy and nicely seasoned. The rice and beans that come with the tacos are sort of bland and leave a bit to be desired. They are good but not great. I've had better but I've also had worse. On my last visit here, my friend ordered the fajitas and they looked delicious. Portion size was huge and she took about half the meal home with her. Overall, this is one of the better Mexican options in the area. Everything always tastes fresh and authentic. I would recommend checking them out! read more

The entree's were really good and I loved the fact that you could choose plantains as a side instead of beans! The plantains were SOOO good!! This is the best Mexican on the east coast. (Lived in cali 7 years) their food is authentic and family owed and run. I ordered my favorite morjecete a few times and it was missing cactus Or chorizo I called them and told them. They instantly said we will fix this and have me the next on them. Nothing bad to say about this place. My favorite. Cali burrito,morjecete or I get the pescado Cozumel. With fresco quac. On point 85% of the time and their 15% is still better then 100% of the others. Solid restaurant across the board. 100% positive! read more

Went on 11/5/2023 in the evening and sat at the bar. The bartender immediately told us they were extremely short staffed and service would be slow. We appreciated the heads up and decided to stay anyways. I wish I got the young ladies name who tended the bar. Yes they were short staffed, and we had to wait a while. But the bartender did an amazing job under pressure. She did not stop moving once. She made drink after drink, answered the phone and even delivered drinks to a couple of tables. She stayed calm and got us everything we needed with a smile. Great Job to your bartender who was working last night. Again I did not get her name but we went in on 11/5 around 5:30pm. She deserves to be acknowledged! We love your restaurant and always have a great experience there! read more

Wish they had a 0 stars..... Don't go in after lunch.... I asked for steak quesadillas and guacamole the same as my friend ordered, by the time the food came out it was 9:50pm. I then said "I don't get the quac (as I ordered) he said no Too late Kitchen closed. Your friend will share his. HORRIBLE SERVICE Then no mention was made it was last call. He started putting cups on top of the bottles. Also, was chatting with the regulars or his friends. Well their loss we are now at THE LODGE enjoying drinks. Had a couple different meals here with friends and it's a nice place to chill at the bar and have some delicious drinks and food or sit at the comfortable table seating. The table-side guacamole is great and they ask you what you want in it. The first time I came it did take a long time for them to actually get this made so we got it as our meals were coming out. The second time I came we got seated and then no one came to our table for about 20 minutes until a manager asked if someone had gotten our drinks and we told them no. Thankfully the apps did come out rather quickly after ordering that time. The food is really good, and worth the up and down service in my opinion. read more

As we were waiting to be sat, a guy (maybe the manager) was incredibly nasty to the girl that was greeting and sitting customers. She was nice and professional so I was a lil bit confused about his attitude. It seems like he was training her. We were shocked. He did it right in front of us. I've given this place chance after chance but they always seem to disappoint. Dined in, and the order came without one of the main components of the dish. The dish was $20+ and I was just surprised there's no one double checking orders going out. Another time, I came to pick up a take out order and the employee at the front took her sweet ass time having a conversation about her hours being cut, etc etc. There was a line behind me and out the door but she didn't seem to care. Just blatantly rude and unprofessional. I tried to give them one more shot so I ordered take out and one of the apps wasn't in the bag when I got home. (I should've listened to a previous review that said to CHECK YOUR ORDER!) I trusted that they would at least have the decency to let me know. I had to call and ask for it to be refunded because they didn't even do that initially. This place could be better if they didn't forget things, or could provide better customer service. Communication is key. Consistency is key. Sadly will not be back or recommend. read more

Although I enjoyed the experience, I am somewhat conflicted on this restaurant. Overall, the food was OK. Average. Most Mexican restaurants in the US lean heavily toward Tex-Mex than true Mexican cuisine, so I cannot comment on authenticity. Food was not bland, but not too flavorful, either. The chips and salsa were good. While seemingly easy and standard, I've been served room temperature, stale chips at certain places, but Cielo's came out hot and fresh. The California Burrito, while large and good, was more like a Mission-style (San Francisco) burrito than a true California Burrito (aka San Diego-style burrito). Presentation was quite good as well. The Carne Asada tacos (in corn tortillas) were OK, but the meat was tough; plus, it needed more cilantro and onions. Plantains were a nice addition to my meal. I enjoyed the flan - thick and creamy with a delightful Kahlúa flavor. The Blood Orange margarita was great. Do they come in a larger sizes...? I was surprised that I did not see Cholula, Tapatio, Valentina, or a house hot sauce on the table, which is pretty standard for most Mexican restaurants. I also did not ask, which was my fault. Service was OK. My waiter seemed annoyed and impatient; he was, however, relatively attentive. Despite my three star review, Cielo is a place that I would gladly try again since I was not disappointed with the experience or food. read more
