If I could give CIBC zero stars, I would. My 91 year old mother opened a CIBC account years ago while she was still working with her Social Insurance Number and Health card as ID. Today, she isn't able to access her accounts without "valid" id. She can't access her accounts with the documents she used to open them.
The bank manager and customer support wanted me to take her to service Ontario to get an Ontario Photo Card to prove that she was who she said she was. She was at the bank with her photo health card provided by the province of Ontario which was used to open the account and they would not accept it but an Ontario Photo Card supplied by the same people would be accepted??? Really???
We asked to file a complaint with CIBC about this ordeal and 6 days later, my mother received a letter from CIBC indicating that the complaint was closed because she asked them to close it. No such thing happened and after several phone calls, I discover that CIBC called her and she hung up on them. She did so because that's what she does when she gets a phone call from telemarketers who are trying to "scam" her. How this translates to a "request to close the complaint" I don't know.
I can't believe the disrespect with which they treated my 91 year old mother!!!!!!! She's fine to deposit money, but not withdraw it. They switched her accounts to electronic statements without her approval. She can't see and can't operate a computer and doesn't own a computer, but they did it anyway. She can't get a print out of transactions or balance. And what would happen with those funds if my mother passed away? Does the money go into the CIBC coffers??
This treatment of the elderly is shameful!!!!! read more
