I thought Chateau d'Etoges was lovely. My boyfriend and I stayed here for my 30th birthday. We had a small disappointment (although my fault, not that of the hotel): I misread "l'orangerie" to be a wing or a view from the castle, not a separate structure. Part of the fun of staying there would of course be sleeping in the chateau itself. Nevertheless, the grounds were stunning, the staff was very friendly, the room was fine, with a nice modern bathroom, and the dinner was impeccable.
I had the croustillant d'epaule d'angeau (lamb shoulder spring rolls) with a side of quinoa and was so impressed I've since tried to recreate it with a epicurious' recipe for braised lamb shoulder with pomegranate sauce and the seven vegetable couscous from the same menu. Chateau d'etoges beat me, but I do also recommend trying this recipe. Poulet fermier done to a T, my bf loved his sea bass. And the cheese plate was beyond. They roll up with a cart and you can choose 3 or 5 cheese, which is near impossible because they are all so delectable. We had to be rolled out. All for 45euro pp, however the bill came closer to 200 with a bottle of wine, some port, and a digestif.
I did a lot of research to find this place. For the price (or otherwise, I have to imagine) it is unbeatable. You might find other hotels that include breakfast, dinner or spa treatment in the area, but I am wary of eating inclusive dinners. We payed 120 euro for the night, truly a great deal. You are in close proximity to Epernay and not to far from Reims, but definitely get the intimate, secluded "get-away" feeling of, well, being in a castle in the country in France. read more
