Mint julep's - cheers
Jan K.

Wow, what an amazing experience.. Oaks and Derby... we had club seats--box J.... it's the area near the finish line... great spot to watch the races... I can't describe the outfits.... not just the women..., but the men...crazy but soooo fun!!! We met a lot of great people... of course they were serving lot's of mint juleps, the famous Lilly drink and all the men were smoking Kentucky cigars... 150,000 people came out to see history .... Golden tempo for the win and the first female trainer...

An excellent day at the track mid Derby week, Winsday. The crowd is festive, fun and lively without being overwhelming. We were in the First Turn Club with 2200 other folks but there were plently of bathrooms, betting machines and windows to accommodate the crowd. Getting in the yellow parking lot was easy from Longfield Ave gate and right into the track from the First Turn gate. The buffet was open for at least 3 hours and was well stocked the entire time. They served a couple of differnt kinds of chicken and some short ribs, carrots, potatoes, a few salads, rolls and several desserts (cookies, derby pie, lemon bars, brownies). There was a cash bar and also never long lines to get a drink. Inside seating at tables for 12 and easy access to go outside on the pario area to be in the sun and to watch the races. Great day at the track.

It just doesn't get much better than the first Saturday in May watching the Kentucky Derby races at Churchill Downs. On this Saturday you'll find southern hospitality at its best, Kentucky bourbon flowing via the slightly sweet, minty bourbon cocktail, "The Mint Julep", and women and gents dressed up to the nines! This horse racing track since 1875 is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Churchill Downs serves as the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Oaks, Kentucky Derby and on numerous occasions the Breeders Cup. Perhaps most Derby guest are unaware that the pre race picked winner isn't usually the victor. Today was no exception! What an unbelievable run by number 19, Golden Tempo, who came from last place out of the gate, passing all the horses on the outside, to win the Kentucky Derby!! Kudos to Golden Tempo, Jose Ortiz (his trainer), and Cherie DeVaux (his trainer)!! We certainly hope to return! What a blast!

Early on a beautiful Oaks Day

Churchill Downs is an iconic Louisville locale. In addition to the Oaks and the Derby they have many other events to draw you in to catch some races. We've done many of these but today was a repeat trip for Mother's Day. We did it previously on Millionaires Row which was nice, but this year we did it at the Stakes Room which seemed even better. The food is nice quality for a buffet and it is advertised to stay open for 3 hours after the gate opens, which is 11:30, but today the buffet was available until 3:30. The whole family got to cash in some tickets today which is always a good thing when you're at Churchill.

It was everything I expected and more. To see it on tv is one thing, but to experience it live and in living color is memorable. From the horses to the people to the food and drinks (lots of bourbon) Churchill Downs does not disappoint. Derby weekend has been on my to do list since I was a kid and having the chance to go was priceless. The atmosphere is electric from the first race to the last main event, each is a thriller. The tickets for seating in the homestretch area entailed snacks, non/alcoholic drinks, lunch and dinner meals as racing was from 11a - 8p so it is a day if you want to take it all in. Outside of the track was an open air party with music, food and more drinks which was also part of the package. Everything from empanadas to steak sliders was available. The longest line was for cheese cake on a stick. I will definitely make a return trip!

We came in for a tour in March and were really blown away! The tour itself was not super long, but our guide was really knowledgeable, funny and entertaining. The museum portion was amazing - truly 5 stars. There was SO much to learn, read and gawk at through the multiple levels. Take the time and enjoy it all, I promise it's worth it. The stables didn't have horses at this time of year, but we did get to see one newly retired racehorse and a cute little emotional support pony for him (yes, you read that right). The video that they play in the center of a big rectangular room was AWESOME. A great experience and definitely worth taking the 15-20 minutes to watch. I'm coming back again to see some horses!

Went on a Tour of the the greatest horse racing track in America. It was amazing just sitting there and looking around the track and listening to the tour guide about the horses and the history of the track. What they do to make it ready for racing such amazing place and the history that goes with it.

I am so glad we did this tour! It was so neat to walk around and see everything in real life that you view on television every year. I did not know what to expect and did not research anything prior to visiting because I wanted to be surprised. There was not a lot to see but a lot to learn! There are plaques for each winner, every year, that is placed along the awnings inside. I thought that was pretty neat! We were brought out to the track! I was so excited and also so happy I did not make the mistake of stepping on to the actual track. Someone in our tour made that mistake and was scolded by the tour guide. Still very cool to be standing next to it! After the tour, we ventured to the museum part. Our tour guide was informative and helpful in answering questions anyone had. It would have been cool if they had a bar that sold Mint Juleps during tours, since many of us will not be able to have the real thing for the real event. The tour was not super long and a good length to keep you interested.

The most exciting two minutes in sports [Louisville KY] It's been so long but my only recollection of a horse racing experience was in Bay Meadows in San Mateo CA which closed in 2008. After watching the heart-pounding thrill of Derby Day in "The Greatest Race" film at the Kentucky Derby Museum I was excited to see where it all happens. Seeing Churchill Downs was an exciting experience for me. The tour guide was well-informed and knowledgeable of the thoroughbreds and the process in qualifying. He described the culture during the annual Derby Days... he asked our group if any of us got emotional watching the film. I said, yes!! He pointed to us sections of the racetrack, the best seats, the iconic Kentucky Derby starting gate, Finish Line suites, Winners Circle Suites, Paddock seating... and, of course, the General Admission section. There were many options for all types of budget. The greatest horses in history from Aristrides to Secretariat have been crowned champions here at Churchill Downs. This is where the world's most prestigious horse race and the crown jewel of thoroughbred racing continues to keep 150 years of pageantry and tradition alive. There typically isn't the need to dress up like Derby, there are some instances and areas that have dress codes or where themed attire is encouraged. I just want to be able to attend my first Derby Day in a fancy dress and hat ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Review #3910

The perfect Thanksgiving outing! Spending Thanksgiving at Churchill Downs was such a fantastic experience. It was the perfect excuse to get all dolled up and go out for the day! The atmosphere was incredible, and it is surprisingly family-friendly. We were impressed by the food choices available, they have a full Thanksgiving dinner too. They also have a full mocktail station, they had dirty sodas and plenty of other creative non-alcoholic options, which was a nice touch. Wagering was super easy; you can place bets yourself at the kiosks or go to the wager desk if you need a hand. We also loved the seating situation; there was ample seating right up close to the action, so we didn't miss a beat of the races. Also lots of space inside. Overall, a high-energy, fun, and memorable way to spend the holiday. We definitely want to come back!

The First Turn Club at Churchill Downs is a caverness space at the tracks first turn. The front side is all glass, and there is a sizable apron. There is stadium seating upstairs. Generally, you cannot see the start of races, nor the finish. You have a great view of the main Churchill and the infield, but all you see of the horses is a whoosh as they go by. You'd have to dash inside to watch the finish on a screen. Not for me. 85

Is the gift shop open on a Sunday?

I would like to find out what time tours are available during May after the Kentucky Derby is already over?

Hi Kathy! The tours are run through the Kentucky Derby Museum which is located right beside Churchill Downs. The Museum hours from March 1st-November 30th are Mon-Sat 8AM-5PM and Sun 11AM-5PM. The General Admission to the museum which includes full… Read more

Does anyone know what time brunch is tomorrow, Sunday?

What is appropriate attire for a woman to wear to a race on a Saturday afternoon in November?

Women are dressed anywhere from casual to dressy. The formal dress is more for the derbys.

Looking at breeders cup ticket options. Third floor clubhouse box seats say access to second level food court. What is this like? Is there seating? Hoping to have indoor outdoor options since it could be cold in Nov. Are these seats worth it? Thanks!

Is there any place to charge a phone?

Depends on your seating area- outdoor seating no. If you in reserved dining or millionaires row you could find an outlet. I would bring a portable charging pack for your phone

What should a lady wear on a rainy night wed night ? Are jeans allowed? Dress?

You will see it all!

Thurby is becoming quite popular and is now a tourist attraction itself. Typically by Thursday,…read moremost of the vendors are set up to welcome visitors and create photo opportunities. The track opens at 10a and the races start at 12:45pm. I encourage an early arrival to have the easiest experience with parking, shuttles, roaming the track, snapping pictures and checking out the program for your first bet. We use the Twinspires app, but they have several wager windows open. Races run every 30 minutes and it's a quick day. Our visit was in the Skye Terrace, which connects to Millionaires Row. Outside balconies allow outside viewing while still being covered for bad weather. Our ticket also included food and drinks. Based on cocktail prices, I love the set pricing. Food is average. I love Derby Week! Don't hesitate coming to Thurby or any day during this time.

Once upon a time, this truly was the day for the locals…read more Once upon a time, before it was branded with a very silly name and rolled in to the Derby week hubbub, it was fun but kinda chill and manageable. But that was once upon a time....and now we are here and it is called Thurby, and it is almost as big a deal as Oaks (give it a couple more years....and locals will be priced out of it soon enough). This year, I was invited as a plus one to a catered, open-bar, indoor-outdoor area group event. I don't know what it cost, as that was covered by the group she was going with. So I primarily attended because I could go for free AND have my food and drink for the day be included. The most affordable Derby-week activity! Parking was more obnoxious than we had hoped and expected, but after weighing all options...we discovered that parking at the Expo Center and a shuttle to and from the Downs from there was included with our tickets so we opted to do it that way. There was still PLENTY (too much) walking to be done, but less than if we parked at the on-the-day pay lot/rideshare pick up and drop off area. So that was a win. I was grateful to discover that regular, not-see-through-able purses are still allowed in here because I didn't want to have to try to get one on crazy short notice....and while I would have preferred to travel light...I wanted to have a change of shoes to inevitably become more comfortable and switch my heels to flats. It was a good choice, btw. Or...I might could have just done flats for the whole day. But I also won't pass up a chance to get fancied up! The food was fine. Better than expected and better than it looked. The drinks were pretty decent, and at least one bartender was fabulous! (the other, we discovered halfway through the day, had a hidden earpiece and was communicating with someone else where...we thiiiiink about stock needs. This explained a lot about his unfriendliness and apparent nonsensical words anytime he did speak). The lines for betting were totally manageable in our area, and the employees working were patient and helpful. I had a great day! It was a fantastic time, primarily thanks to the company I kept...

November of this year 2011 a year of financial turmoil in some fields of human endeavour but on…read morethe Horse-Racing fields of Kentucky, there was no such sign of any such turmoil. This November had me stretching my wing span from Melbourne, Victoria Australia, to Louisville, Kentucky USA all in a matter of a few days to ensure track-side viewing of two of the world's greatest and most exciting race meetings. The first being the Melbourne Cup, the world's richest Handicap thoroughbred horse race and the second meeting, for two grand days and fifteen glorious races of sheer joy and racing bliss at Churchill Downs for the tremendous Breeders Cup. Entitled, as usual, by Americans when it comes to many sporting events as the World Horse-Racing Championship. (See photo below) There is nothing quite more satisfying than to sniff newly mown hay and Blue Grass Turf and to hear the soothing sound of a fit thoroughbred horse's neigh, which says quite simply, 'Let's get on with it' while standing restless in their protective stalls before being mounted by their skillful jockey to head towards the parade ring. Then, as they reach the starting gates, along with the uplifting roar of the huge crowds, the distinctive sound of these majestic creature's hoofs leaving their starting stalls and gathering speed, pounding through the first furlong embracing the course like there is no tomorrow and no end in sight. This 2011 Breeders Cup for me marked 7 years of Breeders Cup attendance and while there are question marks as to whether this particular feisty filly, myself, can still strut her stuff with the best of those who follow the yearly Breeders Cup pilgrimage, methinks she can still hold her head up high and sigh, 'well, I certainly 'aint an old grey mare to be put out to pasture just yet!' (See photo below) Traditionally the Breeders Cup is held at a different USA venue every year and while it once was known as the richest one day race meeting in the world now stretched to two days it has since been surpassed by the The Dubai World Cup which has a give-away collection of monies worth over $US21 million $US10 million on the main race card attraction alone. Pure pocket change, of course, to those wealthy oil magnates who live in Dubai and the Emirates and who have an oil well or two in their backyards, no less. Each Breeders cup race is a momentous one which covers various distances and track surfaces, but they all lead up to the highlight event, the very last race on the race card, the Breeders Cup Classic worth a cool $5million to the winner and run on a dirt track. There have been some simply spectacular wins over the years, along with a few bitter disappointments, as everyone no matter what their flight of fancy loves a champion to stay a champion, come hell or high water and to always get home first. The joy of seeing the great Kentucky mare Zenyatta coming from mother-less last on her own home turf and then on the turn and into the straight, weaving her way through the great wall of horses in front of her in her traditional style, and with her trademark of a late finishing sprint to the line to actually put her nose in front where it belongs was a sight unparalleled in any sport ever seen anywhere. Watch this 2009 event below to see the horse finish of the century. Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud_XPH6Eix4 After a steely career of 19 consecutive wins under her belt, which included two Breeders Cup wins and going for her 20th, her last year being 2010 in none other than the almighty Breeders Cup Classic, the 'Great Dame' of racing left her barrier stall very late and was once again, 'stone mother-less last,' except this time, it was if she was taunting her backers, and leaving her run to the finishing line even too late for her. She finished an agonising second with only a nostril in it and to the eventual winner, 'Blame.' An aptly named winner, I suppose, under the circumstances, much to the shock and dismay of the huge crowd. Who were more than happy to 'Blame' the unlikely jockey rather than the horse or the circumstances. Such is the bewildering logic of followers of thoroughbred horse racing. Optimists to the end in any race. (See photo below) However, as a racing fan myself, it's hard not to lay some 'Blame' for this heart-wrenching defeat squarely on the shoulders of the jockey, Mike Smith, a famous American hoop (Jockey) who I am sure will never forgive himself for his lack of timing and judgement in this famous racing event. And, while here, I can not forget the great Irish mare Goldikova who won the Breeders Cup mile three times in a row and was going for her fourth this year. Sadly, her defeat was inevitable as she was squashed in on the rail and to her adoring fans she had to settle for a disappointing third spot in a race that will be remembered for being a pretty scrappy event.
