I visited for the first time this past week and was impressed with the music. The folks singing and playing were talented and passionate. From what I gathered online as well as from the service, these guys are a non-denominational Christian church that really want to reach out and include people from all walks of life and belief backgrounds. I just so happened to visit on a day when they were doing communion, and the pastor beautifully explained it before the service began. I chose not to participate, but respectfully sat and enjoyed the peaceful music. I didn't feel out of place or uncomfortable. The service was centered around scripture and connecting stories from the Bible to today's time. There was a strong feeling of inclusion and love, not judgement and shame. I left feeling positive and empowered. And that's just how I like to church.

When I saw a Facebook event called "Meet the Muslims" inviting the public to come tour the local…read moremosque and learn about the Muslim beliefs, I was thrilled for the opportunity. One of my dearest friends, whom I admire immensely, is Muslim and I wanted to learn more about what makes her a wonderful person. I was enthusiastically greeted and given a name tag. The woman asked my name and wrote it both in English and in Arabic for me. Then I was invited to take a seat with other guests to watch a short video about the building itself. This mosque was built with form and function in mind-and we'd learn about the different rooms and features of the building throughout our tour. I was impressed that it was built with large windows facing Mecca-and even the carpeting in the floor was designed to give direction on where to sit. In the prayer room, we sat on the floor and listened to a couple members talk about their beliefs. It was done in a manner that was incredibly respectful and educational-with explanations about the parallels between the Quran and the Bible. I felt a dignified reverence and mutual respect between the Muslims and visitors-especially during question-and-answer time when we got to ask questions. One of the women gave a beautiful explanation about the hijab, took questions from the group and even helped women try them on, if they wanted to. Of course, I wanted to participate and learned the proper way to fold and wear it. After, there was a call to prayer and guests were invited to observe, if we wanted. I respectfully sat in the back of the room and watched as the devout members went through their rituals of prayer and worship. It was beautiful and I felt a feeling of community and oneness. Even though I did not participate myself, nor share the same beliefs, I felt like I was included in their worship. My biggest takeaway from the event was that the Muslim folks are a peaceful, kind and loving people. Unfortunately, the extremists have set a terrible stereotype out in the world, but they do not represent the Muslim religion as a whole. I encourage you to visit and see for yourself. As-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you.)

Even though it's one of the busier temples in Utah, it rarely feels rushed or chaotic. It's calm without trying too hard to be. Inside, the color palette is beautiful--soft purples so pale they're almost white, paired with clean white finishes throughout. It gives the whole temple a sense of light and stillness. I've always found the design here to be understated and elegant. Nothing flashy, just peaceful and deliberate. I've had a lot of meaningful experiences in this temple over the years--and maybe that's part of why it feels so personal to me. But even setting that aside, this is just a beautiful, well-run temple in a stunning location.
