pulled in here kinda late on thursday with little to show for chasing around northern Georgia most…read moreof the afternoon. a race was just finishing up on the Engleman which has an interesting little wiggle and a bump coming out of the last right hander - have to stay off the fast for another second which is way easier said than done. so after watching the cars go 'round for a bit I got on the King to run a few laps with my box stock mazda. total fan of these tracks; fairly flat turns and essess that require some driving with just enough straight to go really fast heading into a banked corner... over against the wall is a straight line track which I don't drive because my intent is to have all the fun, not spend all the money. not that you will, but you could. like all tracks Upstate has a fully stocked parts counter; we live in an imperfect world and things wear out, or they break, or get full of crud, or otherwise need to be replaced and eventually you might just want to race in a different other class and they got that covered. as always car and chassis selection varies by location; but if they race on the track it's stocked on the shelves.

There were thousands of 'commercial' slot car tracks in the USA in the late 1960s and 1970s; there were a couple of dozen racing centers in the Northern SC area alone. A lot of things caused the slot racing centers to close one by one- people not being as interested in hobbies and the rise of computer video games being a couple of reasons. In the last few years, there has been a revival of sorts with a certain amount of people who were glued to computer screens in the 1980s and 1990s playing "adventure" and "virtual reality" games discovering it was actually more fun "playing" in 3-D. So hands-on hobbies like model railroading, R/C airplanes, and yes slot car racing have made a comeback. For a change, more new raceways have been opening the last few years in the USA than have been closing. All that having been said- Upstate Speedway is one of the better equipped and run model car raceways in North America. Upstate Speedway isn't just about being Slot Car Racing's Indianapolis Motor Speedway or LeMans Sarthe Circuit, it's also about people having fun and inviting their inner child to come out to play. Rental racing cars are available so that you and your buddy can pretend you are Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughton Jr. to "Shake and Bake" around their tracks. By the same token children are invited for hours of family fun- the raceway can even arrange a memorable racing birthday party for children aged 6 and up. Call them for special package deals for a day of fun for any sized group. Does your company want to encourage team building? How about a team racing event? Drivers, pit crews, team leaders... miniature racing teaches the same working together for success lessons that "pro" racing instills. Call the raceway now to plan and schedule your corporate event. Stop in sometime and check it out for yourself- but keep an open mind that this is something intended to be a pre-digital age entertainment. Came here while in town visiting my friend and he'd been wanting to come here. We did so on a…read moreweekday night so that we could play a bunch of games exactly like we'd done in arcades decades ago. $12 for all you can play isn't a bad deal, we were here for a couple hours so about $6 bucks an hour of games all set on free play mode. They have arcade classics of the 80's and 90's including X-men, Tekken, Galaga, various pinball machines, Maximum Force, Street Fighter 2, Pool as well as air hockey and much more. Then they had a couple stations set up with consoles games, including Paperboy and a game of Mario Party going on a giant projector screen which is awesome. There is a bar in the center of Pinky's with a nice bartender ready to make cocktails. There is a significant problem with Pinky's and that is many of the games joysticks or controls are broken or just don't work. Tekken 3 I couldn't move backwards, Street Fighter 3's inputs weren't registering, The Jurassic Park shooter, my friend couldn't reload. Marvel vs. Capcom you can't tag and so on. There were just too many games that had some kind of problem, this is especially apparent when going head-to-head with someone. So, I was close to saying a 3-Star for Pinky's, but with all the games you can play it's still a pretty good time here. so 4-Stars. Hopefully the games with get repairs and replacements. Come on down and take a trip back to the arcade days.
