Lovely gate which will be in my thoughts! Love the colors

This is definitely a insta worthy place which needs to be in your 'list' of places to see in Santa Barbara! It's conveniently located right opposite to the beautiful beach next to Cabrillo Park boulevard. Take a nice walk and enjoy the town. There are a lot of skaters here where they zoom past you!

There's street parking nearby. It's so close to East beach :) people are respectful and don't lounge next to this in case people want to take photos. I came here with two friends and they were doing photos. People in bicycles, tricycles and people on foot were passing by while we were there. The side facing the water is the photo op angle. The other side was pretty but just not as pretty. There's an engraving in the ground that says Arco Circle. The art looks like it was well kept and in good condition so that made it good to take photos. And since we were there it, we had to walk across the street to see the beach.

Beautiful spot to visit as you enter Santa Barbara and a chance to walk under a rainbow. Definitely IG worthy stop and easy to find street parking nearby. A small little park, but the huge rainbow Chromatic Gate is what draws you here. After taking all your pictures you can cross the street to check out the beach! There's also a shared bike and pedestrian road. It's a wonderful spot where you can see the nature and the wonderful art sculpture.

This is a beautiful structure to stop at and enjoy. It's located on a busy street but parking is easy to find. It gets crowded and trying to get a picture can be difficult. We were there early in the morning and didn't have a problem but later in the day it was busy. The colors are fading and it definitely needs a good power wash but it it's fun to see and made me smile. The bike path around here is absolutely amazing. It's smooth to skate on and goes for miles in either direction. Many restaurants and stores are all in a walking distance. Enjoy!

The chromatic gate is located across the street from the beach side. It is easy to get to since there's plenty of street parking. Very colorful for any photo and it's fun to walk around to view the different angles.

    Ninja practice at the gate!

Absolutely beautiful spot to visit! Came at the end of the day and saw there was some really cool exercise stuff at the park. Balance, legs, arms you can work it all! You can even brush up on your American ninja warrior skills while you're here! Those dual pull up bars made for fantastic practice but it's not sand underneath so please proceed cautiously! The pictures of the gate really shine at sunset. The bright colors contrasting with the dark shadows of palm trees really made for a nice end of our day.

An article on a KCET website asks the question:"How did Santa Barbara, a renowned cradle of modern environmentalism due to the disastrous oil spill of 1969, wind up with a bright-colored abstract sculpture right across from the beach that was paid for by the petroleum company ARCO, and designed by the man who created their famous "spark" logo?" Good question. Santa Barbara's Chromatic Gate cannot be missed. It is the rainbow-hued geometric metal rectangle that stands at the corner of ARCO Circle, although from my bicycle vantage point it looks to be more on the corner of Cabrillo Boulevard and Calle Puerto Vallarta. Wherever you might find it, it is an awesome piece of work. In the sometimes staid city of the "American Rivera," this is one bold public landmark. Initially installed in 1991, the Gate is 21 feet tall and weighing 12.5 tons. Creator Herbert Bayer had come to Montecito to retire, after a notable (and lucrative) career designing ad campaigns and corporate logos for some of the world's biggest companies, most notably corporate banks and, of all things, oil companies! It was the director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Paul Mills, who met Herbert Bayer in the late 1970's and thought of him, when ARCO offered to fund the erection of a public sculpture in Santa Barbara. (Probably to make amends for spilling all that oil off the coast.) Though the selection of a location on the waterfront was controversial, Paul Mills got to glad-handing and solicited funds from oil companies and local glitterati alike. Soon the Chromatic Gate was born and the work dedicated to the "artists of Santa Barbara." As I noted, not everybody thought so highly of the Chromatic Gate. And they have a point, which is why I shaved off 1 YELP STAR for Chromatic Gate. KCET asks just "how appropriate (is) the Chromatic Gate as a model for public art on what is otherwise a pristine waterfront, with no skyscrapers nearby to give it a context?" Another prominent local artist, Hank Pitcher, openly criticized the colorful art and it's location as "disruptive of the natural beauty of the shoreline, and its jarring geometric challenge to the more sinuous contours of the ocean in front and the hills behind." I think he has a legitimate point. As taken as I was with the boldness of the Gate, it's locale did seem to me as forced and awkward. But I do dig the 1970's touch of a rainbow of colors; built as a gateway of primary colors in a rainbow pallet of yellow, orange, red, purple and blue. Again, color schemes of art normally found around nature usually involve colors not normally neon and so bright. Over the years, the Chromatic Gate did begin to fade as "decades of wind and rain wore away at it, leaving its bright surfaces faded and its edges tinged with rust," said KCET. Sadly, the gate was left worn and tattered--a victim of the elements. The nearby park to where it stood had become a homeless hang-out and the Gate was eventually termed an eyesore. After many years of neglect, the Santa Barbara Arts Coalition was able to put together enough funding to set in motion a restoration effort to bring the Chromatic Gate back to life. It was called "Save Our Rainbow." After gathering the needed money, an arts consultant was hired and Michael Fitzpatrick Auto Refinishing was chosen to repaint the entire sculpture -- an "arduous process that was frequently delayed by wind and other weather issues," according to KCET. Painters worked around the clock sanding, resurfacing, priming, and painting the Gate until all was ready and a public unveiling was scheduled in summer 2013. Now standing proudly in all it's glorious colors, the Chromatic Gate still has it's critics. Even the Mayor of Santa Barbara once called into question whether it was even necessary. "Mayor Lodge made the statement that there was no need for public art in Santa Barbara...that the art is in the gardens and red tile roofs." That may be so, but Santa Barbara should be proud of it's Chromatic Gates, as it has now become part of the definitive waterfront landscape of the area, like it or not. And besides, where else can you walk right under a rainbow?

We had a 4 year old and a 7 year old in our group, but I think their dad had the most fun of all! The activities were designed to be developmentally appropriate to include all the members of our group in their range of engagement. The kids had fun exploring, but I personally found it a little underwhelming for their ages, especially considering the price. There are definitely some great interactive and creative spaces, but I think older kids would get much more out of the experience. One thing that was pretty disappointing was finding out after we arrived that the entire third floor was closed for a private event. We had driven about 70 miles to get there, so it would've been nice to know ahead of time, especially since admission wasn't exactly cheap. Parking was also a little confusing, although there is some street parking and public parking around downtown Santa Barbara and the transit area. There were definitely some highlights. They have a craft/building area where staff were helping kids with projects and doing little workshops. The current theme was marble runs, but kids could also draw, color, build, and make whatever they wanted. Staff were really hands-on and supervised things like glue guns and scissors, which I appreciated. I can see this being a really fun and worthwhile area for older kids who are creative and enjoy building and STEM-type activities. For younger kids, there is a small crawl/play area on the second floor, plus a quiet "cave" or calm room where kids can take a break if they get overstimulated. I thought those were nice additions, especially for families with toddlers or sensory-sensitive kids. We went on a Monday and it wasn't very busy, which made for a pretty relaxed visit. I could see the experience being much better for our family in a few years, so I wouldn't completely rule out coming back when the kids are older. If your kids are school-aged and enjoy interactive, hands-on learning, building, and STEM activities, I'd definitely say it's worth checking out. For younger toddlers/preschoolers, though, I would temper expectations--the admission price felt a little high for what we were able to do. One thing that could make it a much better value is the ASTC Travel Passport Program. MOXI participates in the program, which can provide free general admission at participating science and technology museums around the world if you have a qualifying membership. There is a 90-mile restriction, though--the museum you're visiting generally needs to be more than 90 miles away, measured "as the crow flies," from both your residence and the museum where you have your active membership. Overall, a nice museum with some genuinely fun interactive spaces. I'd recommend it at least once, but for our family, I think we'll wait until the kids are a little older before making the trip again.

Ironically, as tourists ourselves (LOL, sort of), we needed a break from THE TOURISTS! My best friend Catherine suggested we duck into the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and I'm glad she did. It's not a massive museum. Just two floors. But hear me when I say it punches above its weight. On the day we went, there was a thoughtful and curated mix of Southeast Asian and Indian artifacts, contemporary works, digital installations and enough classic pieces to keep serious art lovers happy. There were also funny art pieces that reminded everyone that art is allowed to have a sense of humor, too. I appreciated the balance. One of my favorite exhibits there let us enter our birth information and it generated our birth charts. Whether you believe in astrology or not, it was fun to interact with the art instead of just looking at it. I learned some cool stuff about myself looking at my birth chart. Hey...If you need a break from the crowds, this is the place. It's peaceful, cool inside, has clean restrooms and it's just the right size to explore without feeling overwhelmed. You won't lose your whole day here. You'll simply enjoy the bit of time you dedicate to visiting. Sometimes the best attraction in a tourist town is the one that gives you a break from other people.
