It has been a year since I got my regular dental checkup. Someone recommended him to me. Glad I met him and made him my dentist! I like Dr. Chow and his staff. When I went to get a check up, I did not have to wait long at all. The dental hygienist, Ashley approached me, led me to the exam room and started to do x-rays of my teeth. Afterwards, Ashley cleaned my teeth. The cleaning took the longest. Then I met Dr. Chow. He took a look at the x-rays and made sure I did not have any cavities. I mentioned that I felt some pain in my upper right teeth. He made sure to closely look at my row of teeth. I highly recommend Dr. Chow. He knows what he needs to do and quickly does it. He makes sure I understand what is happening. Located at the Landmark building, the 2, 13, 3, 9, and 4 buses go there. After the appointment, walk around the plaza. Come and get your teeth cleaned and examined. Dr. Chow is the best! read more

So had my emergency root canal done just not too long ago! Had my big girl panties on!!!! Okay I really don't have big girl panties ... Shhh It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be ... After the numbing took effect, the only pain I felt was in my jaw ... From the bite guard to keep my mouth open .... for 2 hours :( My cheek ended up becoming swollen. He said it's due to the fact that because we have so may blood vessels in our cheeks, the numbing needle may have punctured through one. Meh ... I didn't feel a thing, but looked like a chipmunk with one side of it's mouth filled with nuts. Dr. Zampetti did my root canal. And I gotta say, he's really professional. He stopped every so often to ask how I'm doing. And every time he had to drill, he'd tell me that I may or may not feel a weird feeling. That 'feeling' felt like chucks of teeth breaking off .. but not really. Even though I didn't feel anything, I kept asking myself when the hell are they going to be done!!!! My jaw hurt so much :( Thank gohd they took the bite guard out about 15 minutes before he was done. Anywho, after he gave me a script for antibiotics and painkillers. Ended up not really needing the pain killers. The numbness is gone now. The pain is like a dull pain ... I can handle that. I still got the swollen cheek, been alternating between hot and cold packs. It's going down slowly. I do have to go back in two weeks to get it crowned. At least it's not to dig in my tooth again. I can live with that. Dr. Zampetti called me around 7ish to see how things were. Like I was saying before ... not too many dentists do that with their patients. They take the extra step to make everyone feel comfortable. I am sticking with this office. And now, I will fall into a deep sleep coma ... I've had an exhausting day!!! :D read more

It's always a challenge when looking for a good dentist. I plan to have my "real" teeth for a very very long time so I need to make sure it's well taken care of, especially after 4 years of wearing braces! Ick! When I moved back to Hawaii I didn't know who to go to. I asked around and a few of my friends recommended Dr. Chow. I researched him and found out he was awarded America's Top Dentist 2009 and 2010 so I thought he outta be pretty good. I have to admit I'm pretty picky when it comes to dentists. I look for two main things: 1 - does it feel like I'm at a car dealership where the dentist is trying to make all these costly cosmetic recommendations and doing all these unnecessary things on my teeth to profit out of me? 2 - is the staff welcoming and do I feel comfortable with the dentist? Does he care about his patients? Pretty simple things you would think, but it was not easy finding a dentist in LA that passed those two basic tests. I'm happy to say that Dr. Chow and his staff passed with flying colors! I liked how he wasn't pushy but rather gave me preventive advice so I can avoid any kind of costly procedures. There comes a time in your life when you have to make the change from your children's dentist to your adult dentist...wahhh! I loved my children's dentist so I was very skeptical to making the change to a new dentist. Nonetheless it had to be done... 1st visit: cleaning The staff was very friendly The office is well kept and modern The hygienist greeted me nicely, was very knowledgable, and open to answering any questions I may have. She was also very thorough and meticulous in the cleaning, so I felt she did a quality job overall 2nd visit: filling cavities The staff worked very fast-I was taken in right as I walked in for my appointment Dr. Chow began filling in 4 of my cavities, which probably only took 20 mins!! Whaaat?!?! I was lucky to get the appointment the same day I called. The stuff was friendly and efficient, the wait was short, and the lobby was nicely decorated and warm. Puts you at ease when you're gonna have someone in your face. Like Inside you face, has to be top uncomfortable experiences but here it was quick and relatively painless. I thought my last dentist in NYC was modern but heading to towards the back I saw a lot of newer versions of stuff I've seen. There office looked very polished and modern with multiple stations, I was directed to sit at one towards to back. Their technology helped diagnose everything quickly and efficiently. I had a 38 year old baby tooth that had to go. they x rayed me immediately. The images were instantaneous and clear on the screen. Dr. Chow reviewed them and discussed my options, recommended extraction of the tooth. He numbed me up, came back, the whole thing was done relatively quick. I remember the old days of two hour dentist trips. The extraction was really fast and clean. I was surprised how quick. The baby tooth wasn't deeply rooted. I have to make a follow up appointment for my dental implant. But it was a great experience. read more

I don't know a single person that enjoys going to the dentist... including my 3 year old who has lived long enough to dread her visits to her pediatric dentist. BUT, Dr. Chow and his staff are pretty awesome. While (and I apologize) I don't know their names (yet), they are all super sweet, peppy and helpful, *thumbs up*! Dr. Chow does a really good job at explaining everything and makes you feel as comfortable as one could possibly feel about someone putting a drill into their mouth. He listened to my concerns and gave me options and asked how comfortable I felt with them. I can honestly say that I walked away feeling like he knew what he was doing and I felt happy with his services. (I cannot say the same for my last dentist who shall not be named. I could also say this about a few other professions if you know what I mean.) The office is conveniently located, bright, clean and has a lot of parking. There was a Groupon for Invisalign and it was a REALLY good deal. I saw the great reviews and I purchased the Groupon and made an appointment--they were pretty booked and I was seen about 3 weeks later. I was seen on time and I met with some of the Dental Assistants. It took 3 of them to perform x-rays and take the mold for the invisalign. They started to look further into my teeth and that's when I began to feel like they had a hidden agenda. Dr. Chow was nit picking at very minor stuff about my teeth--"a lot of work" before I could even get the Invisalign (hhmmmm huh). Gum treatments, replacing of my crown, and other issues all needed to be resolved. The cost? EXPENSIVE. Dr. Chow called me later that week, after I booked and paid for the Gum Treatment and Crown Replacement, to tell me I am not a good candidate for Invisalign but the appointments for my future treatments were still booked. I was told to get a second opinion from my dad, which I'm thankful I did, because the problems Dr. Chow claimed I had are pretty much non-existant. I called the next day, asked for a refund and cancelled all future appointments. I was refunded my Groupon, which I am happy about. I felt like this place was a scam--I wonder if all of the people who purchased Invisalign Groupons were "non-candiates". read more

The owner of the clinic, Dr. Chow, called me today about my yelp review. It was really nice of him to listen to me an offer a solution to my problems. He said he is going to refund me and also take a look at problem side and additional cavities that I have and wanted at the first place. I really respect this attitude and appreciate it. I wish all the business owners would act like that. He was so kind. As long as he keeps listening to patients, I dont see any reason that this business will not continue its success. What a super nice guy. Dr. Chow and his hygentist Tori were incredibly friendly and welcoming. He took a few minutes, at the start of my appointment, to tell me about his practice and education before checking out my mouth. Turns out I had a couple of cracked fillings (I had a suspicion) and Dr. Chow was able to repair them right then, rather than having me come back, which I really appreciated. He did a great job. I have been seeing Dr. Chow for a little over two years, and he and his staff at Aloha Dental Group have been consistently friendly and professional each and every visit. I have been seen on short notice, had courtesy follow-up calls to see how I was doing, have never waited longer than a few minutes for my scheduled appointment, and even when I've been late, his staff is all smiles. When I go for a regular cleaning, their hygenist, Tori, really does a more thorough job than I've had elsewhere, all while being cheerful, pleasant, and quick. She's like a tiny flossing ninja, assassinating all last week's stealth char siu hiding in your molars, waiting to ruin your dinner date with that well timed blast of funk. One thing that really stood out - Being a bit of a tech nerd, I can appreciate the fact that the office has the latest and greatest equipment, from a bleeding edge 3D printed crown machine, to small fiber optic cameras for getting images of the back of your teeth. Even if I don't need a 3d printed crown any time soon (cross fingers), the fact that the machinery is there tells me that Dr. Chow takes his job very seriously, and is always on the lookout for newer, better ways to do dentistry. Too many dental offices in Hawaii are stuck in the 70s, but not here... From text message reminders and emails confirming appointments, this office is very "on it" and 21st century. I won't go anywhere else and have recommended Dr. Chow's practice to friends and co-workers. read more

First of all, thank you to Dr. Chow, Dr. Zuercher, and all the great staff at Ala Moana Dental. My horror story: I have had two root canals in the past at other dental offices in the mainland. One I don't remember thanks to valium, and another that to this day I have PTSD. I broke a tooth last week and called in to the office for what I thought would be a filling. Unfortunately, the decay was much more extensive than any of us thought. So temporary filling and time to schedule a root canal. Start the panic. I got scheduled to come in the next day. Dr. Chow provided me the most pleasant experience that one could have even though he was doing a root canal on me. A little pinch and no more pain. Dr. Zuercher was even able to fit me in to get the tooth shaped and temporary crown right after Dr. Chow was finished. Not bad since I took up three hours of their day. Sadly I am flying back to the mainland for a couple of years and will have to search for a new dentist. Of something major comes up again I will seriously consider flying back to get the work done. Patient, gentle and calm. This is the Dr. who can help you ally your dental fears! He's wonderful! I am of the generation that is afraid of visiting the dentist due to past experiences of pain. Dental technology advancements do help, but I still have the embedded fear of visiting a dentist from past negative experiences. In the old days, my dentist would clamp my mouth open, inject the wrong place on the gum with excruciating pain, causing me anxiety whenever I have dental treatment. Dr. Chow and his staff are so gentle, they listened to my plight, cleaned my teeth gently (cold water and air hurt my sensitive teeth) and allow me to use my headphones and ipod to block out the sound of the drill - which triggers anxiety. The modern office with amenities also help - you'll watch a flat screen tv, soothing music, modern equipment, but Dr. Chow's gentle demeanor, patience and explanations help make the experience pleasant. I recommend him to everyone, family, friends and colleagues, because he really listens, is really patient and cares about your experience. I trust Dr. Chow and his staff, and with each visit, he becomes like ohana, adopted family. You are welcomed with sincerity. You are educated on preventative care, and there are even payment plans if you need assistance. I love the dental quotes for future treatment that you can explain and share with family for any major treatments. Parking is easier now that the Ala Moana Shopping Center garage is opening more spaces, you just walk right over on the 2nd floor level to the Building next door. Lastly, Dr. Chow cares and he''ll prepare you right away, which helps with any type of treatment, if it swelling or numbing, or anything, you'll get a great explanation of what to anticipate to help your experience. Of course, I have not have any issues, but it is always good to know ahead of time, right, just in case! My experiences have been very good, and both Dr. and staff take time to educate me on daily dental care with the new advancements in mouth washes, automated brushes, varnishes, polishes and pastes for my teeth. They will immediately check to see if your insurance covers the suggested treatment! I feel that he and the staff helps me prepare ahead of the game for my next visit for teeth cleaning to come in without any issues. It not all about a business. So if you want a gentle experience, with a group of people who care about you and not just your business, Dr. Chow and his staff is highly recommended. The horror of being on vacation and your crown falling out when flossing! I seriously lost sleep last night from the worries of having to see a dentist out of town. I yelped all the dentists in Waikiki beach and saw that doctor Chow had great reviews and decided to leave a vm for an appointment at 1am. They were able to see me first thing in the morning at 9:30. The location of the office is right next door to the mall which is nice and the office itself is in the 7th floor with a nice view too. All the office staff members were very friendly and cute. I made an appointment with Dr. Chow 3 weeks before my wedding to fix the filling that my previous dentist did that kept on chipping. The most memorable first impression I had of Dr. Chow was when I called to make an appointment and he answered the phone! I called 10 minutes before they opened and he answered. I was surprised to have a him answer because doctors don't normally do that! He said that no one is in yet so he decided to answer the phone. How awesome is that?!! He was totally down to earth and to top it off he saw me that same day! In 1 week he fixed my fillings, a cavity and did teeth whitening. One of my fillings ended up being too light and he brought me back in to fix it right away. He really listens to what you need and resolves any concerns you may have about your teeth. The reception area is warm and inviting and the front office staff are always so friendly and helpful. You never have to wait more than a couple of minutes before you go in for your appointment. The hygienists are friendly and give your teeth an excellent an thorough cleaning - all while you sit back and watch HGTV on the large flat screen in the cleaning room. Talk about an enjoyable experience. They have very modern equipment including a camera that can take photos of your individual teeth. That feature was very neat as you can see your tooth before and after a filling - what a difference! Dr. Chow does a great job with fillings - he is professional, friendly and always calls to check up on you after the procedure. The office staff is also really great about squeezing you in for an urgent issue and finding dates and times that work for your schedule. So last week I finally decided to visit a dentist after not seeing one for 4-5 years and searched for a dentist here on Yelp. I live in town and wanted someone highly rated and also nearby and came across Dr. Chow of Ala Moana Dental Group. Since I'm in transition between jobs and was going to lose my dental insurance, I wanted to try and get in an appointment before the end of the month. Luckily, I called in the morning and after initially being offered an appointment a week later, I explained my situation and they were able to accommodate me later that afternoon. I was expecting the worst from my cleaning and exam and came away with having one cavity, which required a root canal along with four fillings. Thinking back, this root canal was actually supposed to have been taken care of about 7-8 years ago, but I never got around to it. When it came time to scheduling for these procedures to be taken care of, again they were very gracious in making sure I could get in before the end of the month and were able to fit me in the next day. Later that evening, I received a call from Dr. Chow thanking me for choosing him and wanted to know if I had any questions. My wife and I were floored by this level of customer service, since this was a first for either of us. This was my first root canal and from what I previously thought, would be a very painful procedure. In fact, it was just the opposite. Of course they numbed the area around the tooth and it was completed very quickly and pretty much pain free. The fillings done were actually a little more uncomfortable than the actual root canal. However, after putting on the crown for the completed root canal, it was discovered the color was a little off. Instead of not saying anything and ignoring it, Dr. Chow mentioned it himself. I could not really tell that much, but he said to go home and ask my wife, if we wanted to change it within a week, just call and set up a new appointment to have the crown replaced. Unfortunately, there was miscommunication with the payment and insurance coverage. My wife used to work in a dental office, so she knew something was wrong. She called to complain and spoke with the office manager, who was extremely understanding and non-combative and said she would take care of it. Again, later that evening Dr. Chow called to apologize for the miscommunication and wanted us to know the payment overcharge would be refunded. We also decided that I should have the crown replaced and he was very understanding. A few days later and everything was completed. The new crown matched perfectly. It's crazy to think I went this long without seeing a dentist and to have all these procedures completed in less than a week to accommodate my insurance needs was well worth it. Sorry this review is extremely long, but I wanted my entire experience to be explained to others. Yes, this is also my very first review here on Yelp. I have been a long time Yelp lurker, but finally decided this outstanding customer service needed to be commended. Dr. Chow has definitely earned himself a returning patient and even my wife would like to become a new patient as well. My husband and I have both been seeing Dr. Chow for the past 2 and half years and I've always have very positive experience. He is friendly, calm and professional. The first time I had my filling he called me twice afterwards to make sure everything was okay. And when I needed an emergency root canal procedure, he was able to accommodate it immediately. I visited last week for a regular cleaning-- this was only my second time visiting this dentist after moving from Los Angeles county. It's so hard to let go of dentists you really like and I REALLY liked my dentist in California. So deciding to change dentists was a hard decision to make. With that said, I took a chance on this dentistry because I saw all the amazing yelp reviews and wanted to form my own opinion. But this review only reflects my overall experience and having my teeth cleaned. Nothing intense. When you first enter, the atmosphere is very warming, welcoming, and friendly! All the workers seem efficient and on top of their game. Even though I was only coming in for a cleaning, I had high expectations for this place in terms of customer service and how much they care about educating their patients-- both of which they exceeded by far! I have to say, even though I've only been there twice, I already feel like this is a doctor's appointment I can actually look FORWARD to-- the women who cleaned my teeth were very down-to-earth and friendly, and Dr. Chow himself was very knowledgeable and eager to answer all my questions with clarity and understanding. Most of all, they make me feel COMFORTABLE. And in the end, isn't that what we all look for as patients? To feel like we can come to them whenever we need it and have the confidence afterwards to be able to say, "yes, there is a chance for me to have a healthy mouth, and I've been given the tools to accomplish that." Short review? Yes, make Dr. Chow your dentist. Long review? If you've been afraid of the dentist from previous experience and never went to one because of it, worry no more. Dr. Chow is awesome. I came in because a badly decayed back molar tooth was giving me issues. I was able to get myself registered online before coming in, and the staff were quick to check me in and explain to me what they will be doing for the issue I was having. Dr. Chow checked out my teeth and did a general once-over. He said that far back teeth are usually done by specialists who have the experience and tools to do root canals on, so he referred me to Dr. Blake Ishikawa of Honolulu Endodontics. However, while I was there, he did advise me to get my two front teeth (which were also badly decayed) to be worked on, and he said that those teeth could be saved provided he could do a root canal on it. After a bit of thinking, I agreed to it and deferred that back problem tooth to Dr. Ishikawa. The whole procedure was relatively quick - Dr Chow and his staff were extremely friendly and helpful and answered every single question I had. They set out a game plan to maximize my insurance and to minimize my out of pocket costs to get my teeth back to the way they were when they were healthy. He knew I was tight for cash and offered to do the root canal and provide a temporary filling for the two front teeth to hold me over until my problem tooth in the back was taken care of. He could've easily just told me I NEEDED a crown after getting the filling but he knew my financial situation and said this was the best way to get as much done as possible with the limited amount that insurance covers. I can only imagine other dentists would've tried to upsell me on a crown or some sort of cover that would've costed me hundreds of dollars. Thank you Dr. Chow for being honest. The two dentists you referred me to to take care of the rest of my teeth provided the same kind of quality service as you did - I'll be seeing Dr. Chow for my dental needs for many years to come! read more

I HATE going to the dentist! But I knew I had some cavities that needed to be filled so after getting a recomendation I went to see Dr. Chow. He was very welcoming as was all of his staff. He was very through in explaining what he was doing and what I needed to be done. I could tell that he is a huge fan of technology so I asked him about it and he told me himself he only invests in technology that he can use everyday and makes his practice easier, rather than investing in unnecissary machines that cost paitents lots of money for results that are no better than the way it was done before. The Saturday hours are great and I love that you can have all of your work done in office (they even extract wisdom teeth!) First timer at Ala Moana Dental Group and I left very happy with the treatment and their staff. I barely waited anytime after I filled out their paperwork as a first time client. First thing they did was a full mouth X-ray, after that they checked all my gums and after explaining to me what they were seeing Ashley (the dental hygienist) did a very thorough cleaning and was very friendly and professional at the same time. After that dr. Chow visit me and went over the full mouth X-ray I had just gotten he was very friendly and seemed very knowledgeable. They actually care about you and make you feel like family. One of my favorite things is that they send convenient reminders to confirm each appointment so that you never forget. In the past several years I personally recommended several close friends and military dependents to Dr. Chow and they have all have been very satisfied and happy. Talk about excellent customer service!!!!!! I chipped my tooth on my drive home from work one day and was frightened that the weekend was coming up and I'd have to be embarrassed the entire weekend......BUT, Dr. Chow graciously told me to come in early the next morning (he was booked solid that day, but squeezed me in by coming in super early to fix it!) And, he did an awesome job! You can't even tell there was a chip on that tooth. Plus he was done in 20 minutes so I could still get my morning coffee and roll in to work on time. Dr. Chow & his staff are always very pleasant, professional, knowledgable & most of all, they make you feel comfortable, espeically when you're in situations that are not so comfy. I have been seeing Dr Chow for invisalign for a while now and was so happy with the friendly staff and ease of making appts. I have now made him my family's dentist and am thrilled with the care they have provided myself and children with! I recently broke a tooth and they got me in that day. I mentioned I was nervous and the assistant got me a blanket and neck pillow to make the visit more comfortable. Dr Chow not only took care of the tooth but called me the next day to check on me! I almost feel bad since the front office staff were very nice and office seems clean and I did not had to wait long for my appointment. Now, the reason for 2 star review is when I took my mom in for a possible new dentures, My mom has no insurance and she was seen by Dr. Christopher right away. When I saw him I explained that my mom's denture needs to be either fixed or make a new one. They took bunch of X-rays which I thought was needed. When we sat in the office with him, he did not once explained anything about the X-RAY, in fact it wasn't even showing on the screen like many other dentist office does. So what was the point in taking the X-RAY? just to see it for yourself and not explained anything at all about it? I was concerned about the health of my mom's gum's as well. Not just to take X-RAY for denture replacement. I had 2 options to either make a new one or fix the old one. That was my options. It was hard decision to make since I knew nothing about my mom's dental health at this point. My mom is 70 years old and her gum deteriorates as the years go by so I couldn't make the decision not knowing her health of her gums and health of her implant. When I left, I was surprised again for them charging me for cleaning her denture. We did not ask for it, and she brushes that thing 20 times a day literally. It's sparkling clean. It's kind a bad when they just ask for the denture then, go clean little bit without me knowing you guys are charging me for it then just get the bill at the end. Seriously? I'm glad I found another dentist. He took x-rays again but for a good reason. He explained thoroughly about my mom's dental health and tells me everything about X-RAY which I don't mind paying for. I'm going ahead with new denture for my mom as well since I'm well informed about her dental health. He also did not charge me arm and a leg for x-rays and cleaning fee. read more

Best dentist I have been to. I needed a tooth extraction on a very decayed tooth. Made a appointment for exam and extraction in same visit. Fast and efficient, in and out in less than a hour! Very friendly staff that makes you feel comfortable. I was scared due to past experiences with different dentist, but Dr. Chow was calming and made sure I was comfortable. Definitely will be going back for cleanings and other teeth work. read more
