I've been going to Dr. Katris for over a year now, and he's great!! I switched because my insurance no longer covered my other dentist, so I found him on a CIGNA website. Quick, careful, efficient. He works very quietly, which is nice. He's always got a recommendation - whitening strips, for example (Crest!) His office is observant of these COVID times, and is very clean. Super convenient location as well. VERY happy, and my teeth . . . well, they are super happy as well. read more

I've been going to Dr. Katris for over 5 years. He has a great disposition, cares and knows about what he's doing, and is competitively priced. His secretary is also a doll--very professional yet personable. The only drawback is getting a quick appointment, which is hard to get because he's so popular. read more

Dr. Katris is honest, thorough in his exam/cleaning, and the front desk staff are helpful and friendly. The office is clean and in a convenient location for driving and the bus. He does not try to upsell you on anything and explains everything that he is doing. This is unfortunately not the case for all dentists, so I still go here even though I live farther away. read more

I saw Dr. Katris solely because he was the closest dentist covered under my insurance provider, but I'm glad that I did. Dr. Katris and his practice were a little different that the dentists I had seen throughout my childhood. He's super quiet, which I truly didn't mind because it's pretty annoying trying to make small with latexy fingers in your mouth. His office is fairly small, too. There's only one or two chairs in total and it's not necessarily updated either. But it's clean! Which I guess is more important, I guess. Right? And, as a heads up, it's kind of hard to navigate to-- it's located through the lobby of some BJB Apartment building. To echo a few other reviews, there's not a lot of bells and whistles here. It's pretty bare bones, but ultimately at the end of the day, your teeth are clean and your oral hygiene is in check so who really cares. I'm sure there are chattier dentists with super modern offices but if you need a dentist in a pinch, this one suffices! read more

I was traveling and a temporary crown popped off. Dr. Christopher Katris was so helpful and accommodating. I was able to find him through my insurance and he was able to squeeze me right in. The office is neat and clean, in a beautiful building. Dr. Katris was personable and made the experience so pleasant. I would highly recommend him, 10 out of 10! read more

After not seeing the dentist for about 2 years, I located Dr. Katris through an online search. He was listed as a dentist that took my "discount" insurance card, so I made an appointment. I left a bit early to walk there (his office is in my neighborhood) and to fill out any paperwork that might be given to me. His office is actually located in a rather large apartment complex on the first floor, and after some confusion getting buzzed in and actually finding my way to the office, I was quickly greeted and given my paperwork to fill out, which merely consisted of a one page crudely photocopied page asking basic health and insurance information. Dr, Katris greeted almost immediately after I was done with my paperwork, and quickly seated me. I only wanted a check up , but he took some x-rays just to check everything out. This took only 2 minutes and I didn't even have to get up. He even had the x-rays developed during the course of my cleaning, which I have never had a dentist do before (but maybe that's because i'm behind the times). He cleaned quickly and throughly, and only scolded me on not going to a dentist sooner. I didn't get a toothbrush or a sticker for being a good patient, but I was just glad to be done so quickly. When it came to my discount insurance, neither he nor his secretary had seen it before, but the secretary quickly called the number and found out all the information I needed. It turned out, I wasn't really covered on my x-rays, so Dr. Katris took it off my bill, which I thought was amazing. His office needs some work, but I found Dr. Katris to be friendly and timely. I don't think I would recommend him for anything serious, such as cavities or other heavy dental work, but for regular check-ups, he's your man. read more

Dr. Katris is the first dentist I ever had that did his own tartar removal and cleaning/polishing in addition to the actual dentistry - and is the only one to do so without it hurting so much afterwards even when I came in after--I confess--no cleanings for about three years. Now I don't mind coming in every six months (ish). The office is located at the southwest corner of Surf and Sheridan. You have to be buzzed in at the front door but the sign to the right of the panel tells you the number (*991 if memory serves). Then it's through the swinging doors almost immediately on your left (resist the temptation to sit back and relax in the lobby). The office is a bit spartan but you want to be in and out quickly, right? Dr. Katris is a young guy but he knows what he's doing and only lightly scolds you for not coming in every six months (not that I would know anything about that...). I've never had any serious work done there (haven't neede it), but I wouldn't hesitate to do so, especially because my last dentist seemed overly eager to do work that seemed unnecessary. I hope that, once his practice grows, that he continues to offer the same top notch service. read more

Dr. Katris has restored my faith in dentists and I would give him one star for every tooth in my mouth if I could. He's prompt, friendly, professional, and did not ask me how long it had been since I last flossed. My visit was quick, painless, and free (though I suppose my insurance company should get part of the credit for that last part). Dr. Katris does everything himself (no hygienist) and he didn't try to sell me any unnecessary treatments or services. In fact, I thought I had a cracked filling, but he told me that it was in fact a sealant that had come out and I was just feeling the normal crevice of my tooth. He said he could replace the sealant if I wanted, but that it wasn't really necessary. The other reviewers are correct about the office space. It's not glitzy and I didn't get a free toothbrush, but I'm kind of suspect of the spa-dentist phenomenon anyway (they have to pay for those flat screens somehow, right?). I should also mention that the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. When I initially called, I didn't have any of my insurance information on-hand, and Annette offered to call the company herself and verify my coverage. She also squeezed me in quickly since I thought I had a cracked filling. Finally, they have Saturday hours. It's a huge relief to have finally found a good dentist in Chicago. Now if only his brother were a mechanic... read more

got my teeth cleaned and a check up. He was friendly and approachable, did the clean up in 20 minutes. I was born abroad and never had any work done on my teeth but he didnt pressure me to get anything done. he just complimented my teeth and in fact, when I asked about my wisdom tooth he recommended I cross that bridge when I come to it since it doesnt bother me now and hasnt been a problem. Clean office and helpful assistant who made good recommendations as well as helped me with timing etc. I'll be back in 6 months, he did a good job. read more

I've been coming to dr katris since I first moved to Chicago 5 years ago. I like that he does it all himself, is quick, and doesn't waste money on luxuries like a free toothbrush at the end of your visit. No spit sucker, just a cup of water and a sink to spit in. He is also honest and doesn't try to upsell you on things you don't need. read more

First, I need to say that Dr. Katris is a very nice, genuine guy. I've seen him twice for basic cleanings and I have always gotten in on schedule. My CIGNA Dental Insurance is accepted here and is fully covered, which is nice. I have had a bit of trouble calling the dental practice and getting a hold of someone. I have even left a voicemail and never got a call-back. It wasn't an extremely important question, but that's beside the point! During my second cleaning, I was in-and-out of the office in 15 minutes. With any normal service situation, I would be pleased to have that quick of a turnaround. However, my mom works in a dental office and I have never had a cleaning that was less than 30-45 minutes. He didn't do any tooth scaling and did not floss my teeth -- which I thought was kind of strange TBH. I guess I'd say I am used to a more in-depth cleaning. Anyway, generally a good experience, nice guy, decent office. read more

First, I want to preface that I have a dental phobia. There's something about people rooting around in my mouth that I can't stand. That being said, Dr. Katris is amazing. First off, his staff is always nice and they work with me to get my appointments asap. Dr. Katris himself is very personable, very attentive and very kind. And what I love is that he's very fast and efficient. No BS, no waiting around forever. He knows what needs to be done and he does it, and with excellent care. Whether it's getting filling, patching a chipped veneer, placing a crown (all of which I've had) he's direct and gets it done. Its great to have a dentist I can rely on. I recommend him full heartedly. read more

Terrible I've tried to set up appointment for the first time after work or on weekends I was told I can't it's only for long time patients available and that doctor would get mad at the person who answered the call basically if you are new patient you have to take day off to have appointment during the day from 9 to 4 anything later after 4 pm it's for long time patient so I took my business somewhere else thank you but no thank you for double standards. read more

Dr. Katris is really nice, and he referred me to an excellent oral surgeon when I needed my wisdom teeth removed. Unlike a lot of offices, he will generally see you at your actual appointment time - no waiting, which is a plus. I have to agree that his office is kind of blah. It's a minor quibble, since the service is excellent. read more

Dr Katris has always been prompt courteous. I appreciate the fact that he does his own cleanings. He is not big on small talk but its not like I want to spend longer than I have to at the dentist! Their new office space is much better, updated and fresh. His receptionist is a sweet woman who has on two occasions watched over my infant while I was being looked after. Just this past week I had an overwhelming awful tooth pain and when I called they said, come right now and we'll see you -- and he did. My chart was out and waiting when I walked in the door. How refreshing. I wasn't aware that all dentists don't do root canals, but I was giving a referral from Dr Katris to a specialist. read more

Amazing service! New patient in and out. I had to put a crown in that fell off (another dentist that I have been seeing for 5 years placed it). Dr. Katris cleaned and recemented my crown and didn't charge much. Real nice guy. On the quite side, but that is good attribute. Doesn't try to upsell you. read more

Don't be fooled! The reviews for this dentist office are inaccurate. I made my appointment for a cleaning and a cosmetic bonding repair for one tooth. The first available opening was two and a half months out. I booked it and waited since it wasn't an immediate necessity. When I arrived on that Wednesday, I showed up fifteen minutes early to fill out paperwork. I found the office with some help from the apartment concierge and was met with a reception desk stacked high with multiple piles of paperwork. No big deal, I thought. I'm not here to give out an organization award. Dr. Chris Katris was having some issues with the client scheduled before me. The language barrier wasn't helping the situation. I patiently read my magazine while he explained to the client that he needed to book another appt to finalize whatever work needed to be done. I was taken back to the the "chair" while he organized his station for my appt. He looked at my teeth and assessed what needed to be done for my bonding repair. When he started to apply the adhesive is when I started to allow the anxiety to set in. His method was unlike the others I have had in the past. When he then started "shaping" and "polishing" my tooth with a piece of plastic I just told myself it's an alternate way of going about the procedure. Unfortunately, my initial feelings were correct because his lazy-ass backwards approach to dentistry left me with a cleaning/ repair appt on a Wednesday and a broken tooth/ uncleaned teeth on the following Sunday. Four days!!! Four days is all it took for it to break off, mind you it has been two years since my last repair. It took him no longer than ten minutes to "fix" my bonding. When he was finished, he looked at me with all sincerity and asked, "Do you still want a cleaning?". I forgot to mention that when he was applying the bonding he was arguing with the receptionist about ANOTHER client who was too late and wasn't able to be fit in for their appt. So when he looked at me and asked if I still wanted the cleaning I said, "Yes, that is what I booked the appt for." His reply was he generally likes to have separate appt's for these procedures. I can understand that, to a degree. But when my repair took ten minutes and I can literally here the scheduling issues and having the appt book max'd out... It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand my business isn't important or valued. Let alone, the health of my teeth. So I left the office with a lumpy, un-buffed repair and no cleaning for my plaque ridden teeth. What a terrible experience. When my tooth broke off four days later, all I could do was laugh. I have been an avid user of yelp since I moved to Chicago last year. This experience is now why I have an account - to share the unprofessional, unsettling experience of Dr. Chris Katris. Here's to my first review! read more

After reading the reviews, I was confident that Dr. Katris was going to be my new dentist. Even thought I was going to refer him to a friend of mine. I was wrong! His office is hidden on the first floor of an apartment building that you need to get buzzed in to. My appointment was for a routine cleaning and check-up. I arrived about 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork and the dentist was waiting in the waiting room. Quick and painless I filled out the paperwork and was in the chair 5 minutes before my appointment. X-Rays were taken then the cleaning began. I felt as if he was a one man circus, doing everything for himself, no hygienist or chair assistant - is he really this efficient? However, literally 11 minutes goes by and I was completely done with my entire appointment. He didn't even floss me after the cleaning. I felt it was too quick and not thorough. I do practice good hygiene, but seriously, 11 minutes! When he was done, I asked him to email me my x-rays (because I will not be returning) and he said he doesn't have digital copies, only film. Its 2013, who's not up to speed on the latest technology?!?! I have left dentist appointments 30-45 minutes after sitting in the chair. Others complimented him on his punctuality and quick routine; I, on the other hand, did not appreciate the lack of service and dated office. I didn't even get a toothbrush at the end. As I was about to exit, both him and his receptionist just said "Bye" and I knew I had a $5 co-pay they did not collect. I'm an honest person and I asked about paying my co-pay. They pulled out my file and confirmed I needed to pay. They collected the money and I had to ask for a receipt. I would highly not recommend Dr. Katris for any type of service, unless you want below average quality. read more

I found Dr. Katris very relaxed, but not in a good way, lax is probably a better word. All the reviews are accurate in describing how old-fashioned his office is, it was like I stepped back in time to the 1960s. I was fine with the old equipment, seeing how expensive equipment can be, but when I saw spots on all the equipment, it just looked unsanitary and unsettled me deeply. Dr. Katris did use gloves but I was just praying that his tools were sanitized. He did not floss my teeth and only took two x-rays which my previous dr. took four x-rays of my mouth every two years and then in the off year he only did two. Dr. Katris did not say anything about a problem that my previous dr. had been reminding me about to keep clean and floss every day but this was proably because he only had half the x-rays he needed to see this issue. He said nothing about anything really, didn't ask about the health issues that could be complicated by poor teeth and gum health, didn't ask about what my previous dentist said. He kept asking me if I wanted to spit instead of just telling me to do it like he was uncomfortable with people. Since it was just a cup of warm water and a spit bowl instead of a water shooter and spit sucker, I was worried about the spit getting outside of the bowl and then never getting cleaned up. I just wish I would have been told to go visit the office first to get an idea of what I was getting myself into. I also wish I had read the filtered reviews and that there were more reviews from people who had been to better dentists first. read more

I hadn't been to a dentist in a year due to a lapse in dental insurance. I was terrified that I would have a cavity but Dr. Katris put my mind at ease with his efficient exam and cleaning. Will definitely go back in 6 months! read more

I've seen Dr Katris a few times. The only complaint I have is that he isn't a full service dentist. He doesn't do extractions or anything like that. If you need your teeth cleaned and easy stuff like that, he's good. If you need an extraction or other intensive work, he refers you to other places. His prices are reasonable and if you're in pain, he fits you into his schedule for that day. As for the dingy office he has a new one across the hall from where he was and it's still under construction so I'll hold off on a review of the office until after it's done. read more

FYI: Dr. Katris has a newly remodeled office space within the same building. It's really nice-- feels more "professional" without the dingy brown carpet. I think he moved into that space September 2010. I've been going to Dr. Katris for a few years for regular check-ups, cleanings, and the occasional cavity. Service has always been prompt, friendly and thorough. While he's certainly very pleasant, he's not big on small talk, but I appreciate the fact that he's "no frills." He just focuses on doing great work and sends you on your way. I highly recommend him, particularly if you're typically afraid of dentists! read more

I had such an unpleasant experience with Dr. Katris, I was prompted to write my first ever Yelp! review. Unfortunately, I am forced to give him one star, as my preference would be "no stars." As a few others have said, don't be fooled! There are far superior dentists out there. A change in jobs meant a switch in insurance, which meant I was no longer able to keep the beloved dental team I'd had for three years. After reading fairly good reviews on Yelp! (not having clicked through to the "filtered reviews" as I did after the fact), I made an appointment for a cleaning and overall consultation. I was running late for my 9:15 a.m. appointment and called to let them know I'd be there about 9:30. I was told that would be too late. No offer to reschedule for later in the day or another day. Just flat out, that would be too late because he had other appointments stacked up behind me. Dismayed, I said clearly they weren't willing to work with me, so I'd have to look elsewhere for a dentist. The receptionist's tune changed and suddenly she could fit me in no problem. When I arrived, there was one gal in the waiting room, one gal in the chair. After filling out my paperwork, I waited a bit and Dr. Katris came out. He has a very frenetic, nervous energy that doesn't do much to put the patient at ease. I told him in addition to a cleaning, I had a few other issues I wanted to discuss with him. He proceeded to set me up for X-rays, and as someone else noted, I was a little put off by how dirty everything was. I further got nervous when after having his (gloved) hands all over that dirty equipment and who knows what else, he took my X-rays then proceeded to start cleaning my teeth. I admit, I was a little too nervous to ask him if he changed his gloves before he started my cleaning, so I take the blame for not pressing that particular issue. Of course, he should also know better! As another reviewer noted, Dr. Katris doesn't use suction, like every other hygenist/dentist who cleans your teeth. Instead he asks you rather timidly if you want to spit, almost like he's afraid you'll say yes. After about five minutes of halfhearted scraping, he did about 30 seconds of polishing, told me to spit and said everything looked great. He didn't floss my teeth, nor did he give me a fluoride rinse. Normally after getting my teeth cleaned, they feel showroom new. With the exception of a little bit of grit from the "polishing," my teeth felt exactly the same. I could have done a better job with my toothbrush and a toothpick. What was even more disturbing was the assertion that everything was fine. I have a chipped filling in my bottom molar -- it's big enough that food is constantly getting caught in it. When I queried him about it, he said it was fine and not worry about it. It was only when I continued to press him that he finally relented and agreed to set up an appointment to fix the chip. I also have a wisdom tooth that needs to be removed, which in spite of the other three being out and constant swelling around it, he said it was fine to leave in. I am also in need of a crown because a quarter of an upper filling has come out, leaving a huge space. Dr. Katris' response? "It's fine." Oh and when I left, there wasn't single other patient waiting to be seen. So much for a mountain of patients stacked up behind me. Never again will Dr. Katris have his hands in my mouth. I will be looking elsewhere for my dental care. And if you're searching for a new dentist, I suggest you look elsewhere, too! read more

Pretty good - explained most things to me and referred me to a couple places to have my wisdom teeth removed. The location is a bit odd since it's inside of an apartment building but the staff is super friendly and when I needed them to mail over my xrays to my oral surgeon, they did it immediately to avoid any further delay. read more

Put in a crown. Got infected the second day. Charged extra for the infection, which was likely a result of his procedure. Now a year and a half later, I find out the crown doesn't fit properly and there is decay underneath, Have to have it replaced. Find another dentist, I did. He is out of date and doesn't do very good work in my opinion. read more

I really feel lucky that I randomly found Dr. Katris as a dentist in my area. I basically chose him off of a list of options from my insurance and thank goodness it worked out so well. He is courteous, considerate, and efficient. I've had two "emergency" toothaches and I have been able to get into the office promptly. Dr. Katris, in his quiet way, makes you feel like the most important patient he has when it comes to those kinds of unexpected issues. He also doesn't push unnecessary procedures on you, because let's face it, every day Joe Shmoe doesn't always know if he needs the dental procedure or not the way you know when you have a broken arm. The only downfall to this office is the location if you have to drive (like I've done when coming straight from work) - parking is tight but there is a Resurrection lot across the street you can pay for in a squeeze! read more

I saw Dr. Katris for 7 years while living in Chicago. Other reviews are spot-on when they talk about no lectures or scolding; however, there's a fine line between being nice and being negligent. Now, after seeing a "real" dentist for the past while, I've come to realize how lax Dr. Katris was in the services and care he provided. I have required a root canal, multiple crowns, and soon need to have 2 wisdom teeth pulled due to decay that developed around a cavity that Dr. Katris shoddily filled. If you prefer the non-confrontational, nice guy for your dentist, then this is your man. Me - I prefer to have a dentist that is looking after my best interests, not one who is trying to roll through as many appointments as possible. Convenience? By far, very convenient since he has Saturday appointments, which fit into most people's schedules, especially in Lincoln Park/Lakeview. However, be warned that being able to schedule even 4 months in advance is hard to do. And other reviews are accurate about the spartan, drab office. Think about the Steve Martin scene in Little Shop of Horrors and there you go. Save yourself alot of hassle in the future and find a different dentist. read more

After reading everyone else's reviews I pretty much knew what to expect. No frills office with a lack of modern equipment, but a dentist who knows how to get the job done. For example, he doesn't have the water shooter or the spit sucker. Instead he has a cup of water and a small sink. If you can deal without modern luxeries like the water shooter and spit sucker, this is a good place to go. Like others have said, I felt that Dr. Katris was honest, trustworthy, and he did a good job cleaning my teeth. That puts him ahead of 75% of the other dentists in the city. He is pleasent to talk to. I wouldn't have major surgery done here, but for routine cleanings and minor work, this is a hidden gem on the north side. read more

Somehow, I found a dentist that is exactly like the one I grew up with and loved. I'm used to the old-fashioned way he has his office, so it doesn't bother me that it doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of other practices. I actually appreciate that he is the one who does all the work, as I had tried another fancier dentist first, and I was not used to having a dental hygenist handle the majority of the appointment. Also, just like my old, beloved dentist, you can trust him not to do any unnecessary work. The aforementioned fancy dentist I tried previous to Dr. Katris insisted that I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed even though my lifelong dentist had encouraged me to leave them alone unless they began to bother me. She also insisted I had several cavities that needed to be filled (which I knew was impossible). I'm glad I refused and got a second opinion because Dr. Katris confirmed that there was no need for any work, and I was cavity-free. read more

Finally, the search is over!!! An honest dentist in the city of Chicago. He does everything himself with no wait and better yet no BS. I had not seen a dentist in almost 4 years. I got no lecture or lengthy talk about how flossing will save my life. He was pleasant, professional and efficient. If you do not have a dentist or are skeptical after a dentist told you you needed $5000 worth of work head over and see Dr. Katris. read more

I have used Dr. Katris for 15 Years and I have lived in other cities and always go to him. I would not recommend anyone else. He is reasonable on prices, has filled many cavities for me, tons of cleanings, and even root canals. Yes a painless root canal believe it or not. I highly recommend him to everyone who needs an friendly and considerate dentist! Yes, the new office is nicer but his prices have increased a slightly. Why pay for an office decorations. The old office was quite satisfactory for 14+ years, with cheaper prices. read more

I had my first appointment today. (My face is still numb) I have to agree with most of the the previous posters. No frills, but I don't want to pay for that anyway. I had a broken tooth so I called and was told the first available appointment was June 6th. When they learned it was a broken tooth they got me in right away even though I was in no pain. They said to come in at 1:15. I showed up at 12:45 and when I arrived the doctor happened to be in the waiting room and asked "are you matt?" I said yes and was in the chair within three minutes. I can't remember EVER being seen on time with any other dentist ANYWHERE. I've never seen a dentist work so hard and efficient. He explained everything thoroughly. While waiting for me to get numb, he did a cleaning for another patient. It took him less than an hour to restore my tooth and do that cleaning. I had lost my dental insurance for about three years and with my new insurance had to find a Dr. That was in my network. I have found my new dentist. I'm afraid to recommend him though. I don't want more competition for appointments. Did I mention it was totally painless? read more
