She was wonderfully, compassionate and apologetic. I was basically assaulted in the chair while I had instruments in my mouth. I can in for a dental emergency, a cracked tooth that was giving me significant pain. The dental assistant was kind and gracious while taking the x-ray. The dentist came in, did not introduce himself, had his back to me most of the time and finally said, "you need a root canal", all of this before he even verbally acknowledged my presence. I was a bit nervous, well a lot nervous and my legs were shaking, his next response was telling me to stop moving, "because you can't hit a moving target", of course this left me perplexed because, I was curious as to what was he trying to hit, seeing that he had diagnosed me with the need for a root canal and said he'd give me a referral. The dental insurance is commonwealth HMO, my first time using the HMO because of a job change. Here's where things went from bad to worse, he started cleaning my teeth without asking me (this is where the abuse comes in), I've worked in health care operations for many, many years and I've managed multiple dental practices. Everyone in healthcare knows, that if you do not ask the patient for permission, when you decide to go off course of the originally c/o, it is assault, extreme but true. I came in for an acute issue and I was hustled. Very typical scam for Health care clinicians who pray on unsuspecting patients. It all happened so fast. Once I was able to say something, I then said, you are wasting my time, I did not stop him from doing the cleaning, I was so alarmed that he would take it upon himself to just start the cleaning when I came to the office for tooth pain and a cracked tooth. His response to me was " when was the last time you've been to the dentist... didn't they tell you that you had a hole in your tooth, I responded something like, "I'm not neglecting my teeth, had I know, I would have taken care of it". Another one of his responses was, "You have a lot of crap on your teeth and I'm trying to get it off", Really.... The only reason I was there was for treatment of my cracked tooth. He finally finished with the 15 minute cleaning job and walked away saying "I'm not trying to hurt your feelings" in which I had responded, "too late". On a positive note, I did hear him speaking nicely to another patient in the office, who had actually seen him at another location. One can only speculate why he had such horrible bed side manners with me. He was horrible before I had even opened my mouth. I WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS PLACE, and I made this perfectly clear upon leaving the office.

I went to this dentist office for the 1st time today and had a very bad deceiving, insurance…read morescamming, muniplitive, no integrity, lying about the service getting done. I dont advice anyone to go here. when everyone is smiling and welcoming you in its a red flag. I set up an appointment with this dentist for a speciic thing a (tooth filling) i needed. I called them to ask if i needed anything extra to bring and was infomed to just bring my id. Red flag 2 they didnt even ask for my insurance card and i had never been their before. I was very adamant about needing that service and that was the nature of my visit. I checked in did some paper work and again stated the nature for my visit and stated if i couldnt get my tooth filled then i wouldn't want any of their services and i would find another dentist. I also stated this on my phone call. I was informed in order to find out what i could get done i had to get some xrays done. I went forward with that procedure. The Dentist came in after the xrays looked in my mouth and stated i could get the cavities filled but she wanted to do a deep cleaning before she did the cavities. I dont even know if you need a deep cleaning just to get a tooth filled but this is what she stated. I agreed, but before going forward she stated someone else would come in and go over what all i was getting done. I knew this was going to be someone who handles the money's involved cause this is how they always do. EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE YOUR INSURANCE ALREADY CHECKED IF YOU ARE COVERED BUT BE SEEKING TO FIND OUT WHAT MONEY THEY CAN GET FROM YOU OUT OF POCKET. WELL HERE COMES MIKE THE RECEPTION GUY. He proceeds to tell me everything is covered except the fillings. Telling me the insurance is only going to cover some of the 3 small fillings i need to get done. I HAVE A MAX OF 4,000 TO SPEND ON DENTAL., but this is what he tells me. that didnt sit well and i informed him i would call the insurance. He then says they have financing if it was an issue to pay. Now listen I have 4,000 to use on dental. When. i said i need a moment to clarify this with the insurance he then decides to tell me i need to make a decison or the girl will not be able to clean my teeth, now granted i didn come their for a teeth cleaning at all. I got up went out side called the insurance and was informed all of my fillings i needed were covered 100%. The isurance wanted to speak with them. (Mike called the represenative a liar) and stated they say that all the time. They were actually trying to extort money out of pocket from me that was not needed. My services were covered 100% when i refused to give them cash money they then canceled my dental work. THIS IS BLATANT DECEPTION. I DO NOT RECCOMEND A DENTIST OFFICE OR ITS STAFF LIKE THIS TO ANYONE ONE. WHEN YOUR INSURANCE COVERS YOUR SERVICE 100% OR EVEN GIVES YOU AN ALLOWANCE THAT STILL COVERS EVERYTHING, AND A DENTIST STILL ASKS FOR MONEY THEY ARE ATTEMPTING TO RIP YOU OFF AND I ADVICE YOU NOT TO FALL FOR IT. THEY EVEN WENT AS FAR AS TO TELL ME THEY WOULD REFUND ME MY MONEY BACK IF THE INSURANCE WENT THRU AND COVERED THE SERVICES, WHEN THE INSURANCE REP WAS RIGHT THEIR ON THE PHONE STATING I WAS COVERED. THEY WERN'T HONEST. THEY HAD NO INTEGRITY, VERY ARGUMENTIVE AND THE DENTIST NEVER SHOWED HER FACE AGAIN THRU THE ENTIRE ORDEAL. I ALSO LEFT AND WALKED TO MY CAR AND REALIZEDS I HAD LEFT OR DROPPED MY INSURANCE CARD SO I DOUBLED BACK AND COULDNT FIND IT. THEY STATED THEY DIDNT SEE IT EITHER. THAT WAS A NOTHER LIE. I CALLED THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND WAS EXPLAINING WHAT WAS GOING ON AND HERE COMES MIKE THE RECEPTION GUY BRINGING ME MY INSURANCE CARD. THEY HAD IT ALL THE TIME AND I FELT LIKE THEY HAD NO ENTINIONS OF GIVING IT TO ME. WHICH MADE THIS EXPERIENCE EVEN MORE WEIRD. Dr Wier took us in right away to check and X-ray the tooth and I was so happy with the receptionist's (Vicky) friendly service that I scheduled cleanings for myself and my 3 kids in the fall. My 3 & 4 year olds loved their check up and keep asking when they can go back for a check up again, and my son loved them too so I forced my husband (who hadn't been to the dentist in years) to get his check up with them. My husband was blown away and was very pleased by their service. Fast forward to April 2014... All my kids and my husband and I have had check ups and cleanings. They were super thorough! I've never had such a thorough check up so I then scheduled myself for a simple procedure to fix a tooth and Dr. Kalkanas has been wonderful! My husband called ahead to notify the office that I would be arriving late to my appointment due to unforeseen circumstances. He specifically communicated that I would arrive around 3:17 PM, and the receptionist, whose name started with "R," confirmed that it would be okay. Based on that conversation, I drove 1 hour and 14 minutes to make it to the office while dealing with a major highway delay. At 3:21 PM, while pulling into the parking garage, I received a call from Zane informing me that my appointment was being canceled because of a 15-minute grace period. I explained that my husband had already called ahead and communicated the delay, and we were told it would be fine. Zane stated he still needed to cancel the appointment and mentioned speaking with his manager, Sandra, after I expressed my concerns. I asked him to wait, as I was actively parking and walking into the office. When I entered the office, I immediately had my husband on the phone to confirm the prior conversation. The receptionist acknowledged speaking with him but failed to take accountability for not informing us that the appointment would automatically be canceled after 15 minutes. Had that been clearly communicated, we would have made a different decision instead of driving all that way under the impression I would still be seen. The customer service from the front desk staff was disappointing, frustrating, and unprofessional. Unfortunately, this is not the first issue I have experienced with Zane. There have been multiple occasions involving incorrect scheduling and inaccurate billing information that later required Sandra to step in and correct. Placing these individuals as the face of the office creates a poor patient experience. To make matters worse, Sandra, the office manager, came into the open waiting area and attempted to discuss my appointment, billing, and personal matters in front of another patient. I had to request privacy, which should have been offered from the beginning. During our conversation, I was clearly frustrated, but I also felt talked over and dismissed. There was no compassion, empathy, grace, or willingness to work toward a reasonable resolution, whether that meant seeing me briefly or simply helping me reschedule. Additionally, the receptionist, El, acted as though she never assured my husband that we could still be seen after he explained we would pay our previous balance on Friday and specifically asked whether we should still come in for the appointment. Again, there was no accountability for the miscommunication. It is very clear that the office culture and business model have changed. What once felt patient-centered now feels transactional, as though patients should feel privileged simply to be there. Long-term loyalty no longer appears to matter. To my credit, I later called back to apologize for my response out of frustration because I believe in growth, accountability, and handling situations better. However, even during that conversation, there was no effort to extend understanding or mutual respect. Instead, I was told there would be "no grace" given regardless of the communication we provided or our heartfelt apologies. During the call, El stated, "What do you want out of this conversation?" and later said she was "tired of going around and around about this." When we explained that we simply wanted to feel valued as patients, El responded that they also wanted to feel valued by patients arriving on time. However, the fact that we drive over an hour to this office demonstrates that we value their services and respect their time. We also called ahead specifically to communicate the delay, which further showed consideration and respect for the office. El then compared the situation to her experience as a hairstylist. Respect, communication, professionalism, and empathy matter greatly in healthcare settings, and unfortunately, this office failed. This review is specifically for the Gold Coast location of ORA Dental Studio - Gold Coast located at 700 N State Street, Chicago, IL 60654. While ORA Dental has multiple locations that share the same name, my experience occurred at this specific office. I hope that the owners will review my call logs and the final phone call with El who showed a lake of respect when I apologized and had no humility and apologize on their poor communication. "Don't put employees in a position where they stop seeing their work as a calling to serve others and begin seeing it as only a paycheck.
