The Camden County Heritage Museum & Historic Jail are a great places to visit to learn about…read moreCamden's history. I discovered the museum in my quest to visit every county in the state. This museum more than delivered. The museum and jail are located in the same area as the courthouse; parks and recreation and election office. So find a parking space and then look for the open flag at the jail. Although your visit starts at the museum which is across from the jail. Admission to the museums are free. I would have left a donation but did not see a box for that. I was warmly greeted when I arrived and told that this was a small museum. The museum offers self guided tours but I was given a guided tour likely because I knew nothing about the area. Having been to a lot of museums, this museum is actually a pretty good sized museum. I liked that the museum was in chronological order starting with when the town began in 1777. I learned that the town was named after Sir Charles Pratt who was the Earl of Camden. The detailed story boards in the museum as well as all the artifacts in the case bring the history of this coastal town to life. I was told that many of the artifacts are on loan to the museum. The museum covers the Colonial War; Revolutionary War; Civil War; WWI and WW2. The museum also covers the ferries; Great Dismal Swamp; the schools. I learned that Camden County was the last county in the state to have a library and that. Another neat fact I learned was the NASCAR connection to moonshine by evading authorities to move alcohol. Moses Grandy became a well known abolitionist after gaining freedom. He was a water man and purchased his freedom twice but got cheated by owners twice. After he got freedom, he emancipated more family members. The current jail is the third and that was built in 1910 and was used until 1940. There are 4 jail cells on the 2nd floor and a small museum is up there too. The first jail was used until 1880. Then a 2nd jail was built, it burned after prisoners started a fire to try and escape. But they were unable to get out of the building and needed the key from the sheriff, who got there just in time. If you are a history buff, Camden County is rich in history and the museums offer a great place to explore it.

The couple that owns this store are extremely friendly as well. The only drawback is that the owners often go on vacation, so the store might not be open as advertised. There also doesn't seem to be a huge demand for consignment shops in Ahoskie, so the merchandise doesn't change all that frequently. That being said, the owners have always been willing to negotiate the prices of pieces they've had for a while. Though there isn't any specific mark-down system based on time, they're extremely fair in their pricing. Be sure to check out the $1 and half-off racks located in the front of the store. I've found some nice brands in these places! My favorite purchase was a brand new Jones New York dress (retail value of $160) for $27! If you're in Ahoskie and love to shop, this place is definitely worth visiting!

I've seen the CSS Neuse in Kinston but that's just not the same. The CSS Albemarle was a Confederate ironclad ram whose brief but dramatic career left a lasting mark on Civil War naval history, especially in eastern North Carolina. Built under extraordinary conditions in a cornfield near Edward's Ferry on the Roanoke River, the Albemarle was the brainchild of 19-year-old Gilbert Elliott, who oversaw construction with help from plantation owner Peter Smith and Confederate Chief Constructor John L. Porter. Commissioned in April 1864, the Albemarle was designed to break the Union blockade and support Confederate operations in the region. She was 152 feet long, with a shallow draft that allowed her to navigate inland waters where larger Union vessels couldn't go. Armed with two powerful Brooke rifles mounted on pivot carriages and protected by thick iron plating, the Albemarle proved formidable. Her most notable engagement came in April 1864, when she helped Confederate forces retake Plymouth, North Carolina, by sinking or damaging several Union ships. For a time, she dominated the Roanoke River and Albemarle Sound, threatening Union control of eastern North Carolina. But her reign was short-lived. In October 1864, Union Lieutenant William B. Cushing led a daring nighttime raid using a spar torpedo to sink the Albemarle while she was moored at Plymouth. The attack was one of the most audacious and celebrated commando operations of the war. There are a number of captions nearby that detail some of the operations of the Battle of Plymouth. I did not see a note that they were closed or opening late. I even called the phone number on the brochure but no answer. There is a good sized parking lot. But it was an out of the way excursion from my destination. The building does look abandoned so not sure if it is closed. It was a wasted trip and disappointing. There were three other cars trying to visit as well.

I went to see "It's a Wonderful Life" last Friday evening and it was very good. I was dissappointed that the theatre was only about half full.
