I don't always crave congee, but when I do (#1), I'm coming here to Nan Long…read more
Congee lovers will naturally have their preferences (soupy, goupy, chunky, watery, etc.) and Nan Long always makes it my favorite way: just enough rice grains for texture, but ultimately a thin starchy layer that makes it more of a soup than a porridge. Most places won't take requests, so it's ultimately down to personal taste.
Whether it's the classic century egg and pork (皮蛋瘦肉粥) or plain chicken (雞粥), they do it well. The prices are also local friendly, with most bowls ranging from 17-34HKD. Their flavorful congee is a solid hangover cure, a must for the dehydrated, a winter favorite, and an easy local pick. I don't remember if the menu has an English version, but it should be easy enough for most non-locals to figure out what they want. Pro Tip: Pictures always help.
The only issue I've ever had with the food was for their rice noodle chinese donuts (炸兩) and the actual fritters / cruellers (油炸鬼) themselves are usually a bit too dry. I've been here in the early AM (8am) and had it fresh and was still miffed by how much I needed to dunk it in my bowl. Typically I love the crunch from a perfectly fried fritter, but even these were just subpar. Tasty congee thankfully, trumps all the rest.
No "local" congee place is ever going to be spacious, which includes this joint. The place is tiny and is crowded in the mornings / afternoons. Solo dining and/or two people parties would be recommended dining here, anything more might be problematic for their space. No credit cards of course, and try not to be offended over the sometimes (very loud) staff.
