"Buck-a-scoop" as we all fondly remember it has definitely changed their recipes as they've changed their owners, and prices, but the food is still good and you get a solid couple meals for a solid price! 3 items come to $6.75 and they still pile on the fried rice like they're feeding a family. I was worried when it didn't look the same (looks like Spanish rice) but holy heck did it taste just like I remembered from my GJHS/college days! I came in for the nostalgia, wary of the recent reviews, but was very pleased in that while it may not be the exact same, it is still the absolute best spot for a cheap Chinese meal. I also showed up only 10 minutes before close and the woman working the counter was kind and smiling- she was sweet and the food was good. $7 for 2-3 meals is amazing! I was super excited to get Chinese..... I got watered down sweet and sour sauce for my sweet and sour chicken. It can not POSSIBLY cost that much to just give me full strength sauce...... I am sooooo disappointed. I definitely will not be revisiting this restaurant. Beware if you are tempted.... If they are cutting corners with the sweet and sour sauce I can't imagine what other corners they are cutting.... I used to enjoy this restaurant. Anyone who grew up here will relay to you the glory days of "Buck-a-Scoop." A simpler time where I could step through the doors to a virtually empty restaurant with a few sketchy patrons who dared sit to eat and the pain of mass inflation melted away having had no bearing on my mighty, hard earned dollars. I could literally, no joke, walk in with $15 and walk out with days worth of food. The quality was never in question...I always suspected, if not knew, it was the neighborhood strays. I persisted anyway knowing I just landed the score of my life for $1.05 per scoop. Aww the magnanimous time before new owners took over and I watched as they raised prices and portioned and counted every ounce of food. My soul bent and twisted in agony while my one cheap guilty pleasure was unceremoniously tugged away harder and faster than an ex coming for alimony and handed to the owners' son who I watched grow up as much as out as he devoured the family business one scoop at a time at my expense. Since then, nothing has been the same. I pass by on occasion, getting shooed away when I stop to offer condolences to myself and offer parting words as I would at a friend's funeral in a sad attempt to give this place back 1-3/4 oz. of the glorious dignity it once had. Went here yesterday during my schools spring fest to get a snack! overall it was okay, server didn't speak much english but i was able to point to the food i wanted and get it just fine. Absolutely love this place, I always come here whenever i'm craving chinese food. It's extremely cheap and affordable. The worker is extremely nice and always gets the food fast. My food is always warm sometimes even extremely hot. There's never been a time when i regretted getting it here. I definitely recommend the Cheese wontongs!! so yummy. read more

How many times in your life will you get Chinese food for $1.75 a scoop?!?! This place is bomb despite the negative reviews. Sure it's a bit run down but they serve pretty good Americanized Chinese food. The lo mein is garlicky home made and the hot sour soup is amazing. I see that the orange chicken is fresh and the seasame chicken. The beef and broccoli sauce is darker than what I am used to but it's also good as well. Shoot even the vegetable fried rice. Got $30 worth of food, brought home to eat. Tasted 1 bite of everything and threw in trash. Worst ever tasting.

I kept myself away because of the price. But, eventually, I caved. I was right, it was j as I expected. Bland and cheap. I ordered an unlabeled peppered chicken "scoop" on white rice with egg drop soup and a fountain Diet Coke. Pretty basic and a good safe bet on tradional items. My egg drop soup was bland, needed something, I just couldn't put my finger on it. It looked right, that odd ever so yellow hue with stringy wispy organic shapes. Maybe as cheap as they are, they leave out the salt on purpose? Possible cutting corner technique? I did not get white rice, instead I was given a yellow attempt of fried rice which tasted exactly like rice with a carrot, a few peas and an egg chunk. To finish it off, my DC tasted terrible as if it was diluted or the syrup to carbonated water ratio was off. Once I dosed up my chicken dish with soy sauce, it actually tasted alright. Something else very bothersome. The plastic utensils are "midget" or "small persons" sized. I felt like I was eating at a tea party, with my pinky up. I wasn't really with midgets at a tea party, but I sure felt like I was. As I sat eating over 30 minutes from 1:00p to 1:30p, only four people picked up to-go orders. I was the lonely dining customer. I'm not really sure I will come back. The bar has been dropped, to the floor maybe. As for what I paid? I don't know what the negative reviewers thought they were getting when going into a place where a full scoop is only 1.75, but no, it is not gourmet. This is Buck-A-Scoop. This is where 90% of my high school lunches came from. This is what I *lovingly* refer to as disgustingly delicious. It's not healthy, but you crave it as much as you crave that greasy bag of potato chips, that pint of ice cream with all the fixins, or that funnel cake at the fair. When you want comfort food that makes you feel guilty, this is what it is. I love the mongolian pork, the sesame chicken, the beef and broccoli, the lo mein (when I feel like it) the wontons. OK, so this is what you call American Chinese food. Definitely changed to make white boys feel like it's "normal" Chinese food. This isn't a particularly bad thing, they are on the southern border of the local university, and they know that. For Americanized Chinese food on the cheap, this place is worth it. The local name for the place is called....Buck-Scoop. You say that and every local knows the place, even if they don't want to admit they've been here. They have. This places is buck-a-scoop heaven. You know what you're getting into the moment you enter. Hell, you probably know what you're getting into the moment you pull into the parking lot. If you're in the mood for a lard-fest smothered in sweet and sour saucy, this is the place. You have to appreciate it for what it is, ya know. Worth it. "4 stars" is relative. One complaint though: I'm not a big fan of the chow / lo mein. The noodles they use seem better suited to an Italian dish, so avoid that and you're good. read more

We got yellow rice and two entrees. Spent $5.25 and enjoyed out meal immensely. The two of us ate the meal and had enough left for breakfast the next morning. I can see some items would be better than others. If you get the broccoli with beef (it is not labeled beef and broccoli), you will get more broccoli than beef. But it is really nice broccoli and the sauce is well flavored. The chicken teriyaki was a little dry, but the sauce was great. I cut the meat smaller and then it was fine for me. The pork and mushrooms was loaded with fresh mushrooms. I really think you cannot do better for the money. I have eaten in a few other GJ Chinese spots that were not as tasty and way more expensive. Food is barely edible- we ordered the crab cheese wontons and these were grossly undercooked (I know, shocking since it's just cream cheese that's deep fried). This place has made us happy time and time again . I think there is actually a lot of racism in Grand Junction. I have heard " stories " about this place but it's always Asian related . They have great customer service . Big portions . I have eaten there maybe 50 times maybe more and never been unsatisfied. You get what you pay for but here you get better that what you pay for . People being picky need to go get the 40 dollars a plate up town . For six dollars I usually have dinner and left overs . Can't do that at Mc D's . It's Family owned . I have been coming here for a couple years and I get the same thing almost every time, the teriyaki chicken, beef and broccoli, sesame chicken and orange chicken. Occasionally, I'll try something different, the pepper chicken is really good if you love onions. If you can handle spicy, the hot & sour soup has a lot of delicious flavors. It may not be gourmet Chinese but if you're on a tight budget and looking for a nice quiet night out, you really can't beat the quality for the price. It didn't take long before the main serving lady starting asking "same?", referring to the usual items I get. this is the most disgusting restaurant I've ever eaten in my life it made us so sick I tried to throw up to get it out of my stomach . I used to eat here mainly because it was OK and cheap. Now it is not even OK. This is bland stuff that is marginally edible. They used to have a couple decent choices such as cashew chicken, but dropped them. They heavily pad out dishes with celery and onions. Couldn't find any peanuts in the Kung Pao dish or chicken in chicken chow main. Even fried rice is dried out and inedible. The other location of this store (or one just like it) on the other end of North has gone belly up. read more
