Great barbershop; I've been going here for years. Very relaxed atmosphere with an old school vibe. Specializes in men's cuts, and has the standards down well. New customers have to pay attention when booking. You have to follow directions on his website and he doesn't do walk-ins. I've witnessed a few complaints about how particular he is with regard to this, but he is a one man operation and the time he spends on administrative items, like a new customer not able to follow his directions, is less time taking care of his customers. He has lots of classic grooming supplies and also makes some custom one's as well. I love his products and use them almost exclusively. TLDR: follow his instructions. Be on time. You'll get a great haircut and a fantastic experience. After a few years, he is not just my barber, but a friend. This is after I goofed up his instructions a few times. Love this place. I'm certain you will too. read more

Chops is the man. When I used to live in Central PA, Chops was recommended to be by a few friends. Not only did Chops give me my first "real" hair cut, but he taught me how to take care of my own hair. With genuine kindness and effortless charm, Chops takes care of his customers--new and regulars, alike--in a way that I've never experienced before or since. Appointments are pleasant, although usually running just a few minutes behind the schedule. Not a huge deal, especially when the waiting area is stocked with a wide variety of reading materials and cold brews. Chops also makes his own product, which worked perfectly with my hair. I've yet to find another product that lays as naturally and cleanly as his medium pomade. If you're reading these, you definitely need to start selling your stuff online, man! After moving out of the area, I cannot find a barber equal in skill or manner, which is a damn shame. All the best to Chops, he's unparalleled in his field. read more

Great barbershop. Having been to a variety of different barbershops in the area over the years, I can say that Chops has reached the top and changed the game. Great haircuts from someone who cares about their craft. A great shop atmosphere. No waiting because you make appointments on their website. You would expect that for all that, it might be fairly expensive, but no - all at regular barber prices. Why would one go anywhere else? I'll be back regularly. read more

Two great experiences so far and I'm locked into this shop now. Chops and Ashley are both extremely personable and they create a very casual and enjoyable experience. The music is solid, the conversation is good, and the scheduling is handled really professionally. Most importantly, I'm getting the best cuts of my life at $20 a pop. Highly recommend. read more

I went here a few days ago for my first cut (at Chops). I first learned about this place last summer when I was walking down Front Street and one of the barbers waived at me (from inside the shop). I did some research on what place it was and I was intrigued by its old school and independent approach towards hair styling. This place actually seemed relevant. This is obviously a serious barber (I had Jim and the other was "Chops"). I haven't seen that style of hair cutting since I was much younger. There was obviously some craft and technique the barbers were utilizing. Focusing on detail, but also in a timely manner (my cut was a half hour almost to the minute). I liked the layout of the barber shop. I liked the fact they don't make you face the mirror while getting the haircut. From what I saw, they only have the capacity to do about two haircuts at once, so it doesn't get to packed in there. It is by appointment only, which makes sense. Parking is fairly easy if you don't mind paying for street parking (about three dollars an hour). I believe there is some free parking near the Broad Street Market, if you don't mind walking a couple blocks. My one criticism is that I specifically told the stylist that I didn't want to take anything off the top and he took some off the top (my bangs). I know he was probably just trying to make sure everything was even, but I thought it was unnecessary. I was cool with it because I was ultimately happy with the haircut. But I wish he hadn't taken it off - they have a definite styling theme that they go with - so just be clear and tell them exactly what you want. Like I said, though, I was happy with the haircut and I'll definitely be going back in the future. read more

Chops is the best place to get a haircut. It is a really pleasant place to be, and I always look forward to my next appointment. I've never had a bad experience, and I've never had a bad haircut. It is difficult to get an appointment if you don't schedule them out, but the reason he is so booked is because all of his customers want to keep coming back. That of course can be frustrating if you are booking your first appointment, but it is worth the wait. Chops is a professional, and he knows what he is doing. He takes his job seriously, and he has earned the respect of his customers. Because he is so busy, it is important to keep your appointment and show up on time. Or early! Have a beer and relax a bit--it is part of the experience. read more

I've been going to Chops since he opened his first shop in Steelton and I've been a regular ever since. I happily drive from the Dillsburg/Mechanicsburg area to have him cut my hair every 2 weeks. His skill as a barber is phenomenal. The style of the shop, atmosphere, music selection, and free beer make this a special place. JC knows how to consult with clients on their cut and give honest feedback on what works best for your hair in terms of a style and product. Customer service from both Chops and Ashley are second to none. The products being produced as The American Gentleman Soap Co. are a perfect addition to give customers the complete package. Chops and Ashley are also a blast to talk to. Very fun and intelligent conversation. These two are cool kids who love to support music, art and all the other great local businesses. You get a great sense of community connectedness when chatting about local events at the shop. I love it here. Make no mistake, the success the shop sees is a direct result of the care and performance by Chops and Ashley. Book your appointment now. read more

I think the first cut I got at Chops, several years ago, was probably the first time I walked out after a haircut and genuinely thought I really looked better just because of my hair style/cut. I've been back every two weeks, without exception, since! I feel like I get celebrity style for a very reasonable central PA price. Plus, now that I have my young son, we both go. I hope it's a father/son bonding experience for years to come. Chops and Ashley both do such an amazing job for us! read more

What a great experience. Today was my first visit to Chops and it will not be the last. The owners are super nice and make a very welcoming atmosphere. Very skilled barber. Best haircut I've ever had. Highly recommend! read more

First Yelp review: Today marked my 3rd visit to see Chops, each scheduled approximately 2 months in advance. The website requests punctuality so I arrive 15 min early. The high temp in Hbg was 93 so I got a nice sweat to develop while waiting on their unshaded city steps until exactly 3:00, when Chops' lunchtime was complete. I voiced my displeasure at his lack of punctuality and his disregard for customer comfort. He told me that my comfort outside of there isn't his problem and I should've sat in my car, assuming I drove there. He then told me he was uncomfortable giving me a haircut. The man does a decent job but his popularity created a selfish diva. Addition: Chops decided to post about our get-together on Twitter, referring to me as the "asshat that should find a barber who cares." I really wish that the class-act hadn't deleted it. A few days have passed since my honest review of one instance. Since then, Chops and his employee have spent their time coming up with snarky insults and acting as though I should feel like less of a person for being blocked by them on social media. read more

I went to Chops recently with a friend to get his hair cut. I observed a barber who genuinely cares about the cuts he gives his clients and has a vast knowledge of styling products. The look and feel of his shops makes you forget it's 2011 and puts you right back into the 1950's. His prices are more than reasonable. Plus, he has some sweet mustache paintings in his window! My only complaint is that as a female with long flowing locks, I am unable to partake in the hair cuttery of Chops. read more

This is what the classy Chops Babershop had to say about my review of them on their own website: My review: Michael -Bad no need to elaborate. No more was said...except what they had to say.. Today is my turn to reply. "Reply Chops Barbershop : You cannot be 10mins+ late to your appointment - it's not fair to us or the other customers after you. You bailed on a previous appointment - we didn't even charge you for it, AND allowed you to come back. I confirmed the day before your appt that you would be on time and you still weren't. Yelling and disrespecting me on the phone wasn't helping your case. You've been banned from the shop - go somewhere else." My reply: "You cannot be 10mins+ late to your appointment - it's not fair to us or the other customers after you. " I totally agree and that sounds fair if you are clear with your clients about the "rule" and stick to the correct time frame. On 3/11/15 I called chops at 2:45pm and stating that I was leaving work in hershey and might be 5 minutes late. I get a call back at 2:55 saying and I quote "you can not be more than 5 minutes late. We will not be able to cut your hair if you are" so I said "I am pulling into 2nd st exit now, I will not be later than 5 minutes". As I am literally parking my car and looking into the barbershop window - At 3:05(eastern standard cellular phone time) I get a phone call from chops' lady friend saying with an attitude "we can't cut your hair you are more than 5 minutes late".. So I said "I am in your driveway now as you can see, I see you on the phone talking to me. What would you like me to do?" She says " you are wasting our time talking about it and you are too late". So I said "well I guess I will leave then"(as I put my car in reverse). Hmmmm..... Did that sound like I was yelling?...sounds more like she was yelling at me.(great customer service :) no more that "10+" minutes late...I was exactly 5 minutes late. NEXT "You bailed on a previous appointment - we didn't even charge you for it, AND allowed you to come back." My reply: I cancelled my appt in February 6hrs in advance due to a last minute work meeting in Lancaster. Sorry to chops for putting my position as VP at a bank before my haircut.... NEXT: "I confirmed the day before your appt that you would be on time and you still weren't. Yelling and disrespecting me on the phone wasn't helping your case. You've been banned from the shop - go somewhere else." My reply: Thank you for your professionalism. It has helped me realize that there are no other Barbers in the state of PA that are nearly as delightful to work with. Also, you did not confirm if I would be "on time" you confirmed that I was coming(there is a difference). As a fellow PA business owner and local professional I wish Chops barbershop a successful future. I applaud your drive an enthusiasm...hopefully that will help you grow your business for the future. I chose on 3/11/15 never to come back. Before you "banned" me. read more

Best barber in Harrisburg. He is working on cloning himself but, until then, get any appointment you can. Prices are more than fair and your girlfriend gives you stupid haircuts anyway. Besides, how much does she spend on makeup and the salon? You deserve it. You'll be in excellent hands. read more

After trying 4 different barbers, I finally found a barber who gets it. After the last barber ruined my hairdo, JC was skilled enough to not only fix it but bring it back to where it was before. I can't believe that I didn't find him soon enough. His best skill is that he listens to what the customer has to say and does exactly that and unlike other barbers in Harrisburg, he is not distracted when giving a haircut. Besides that, I'm glad he's got a shop that takes you back in time and he actually dresses like a real "Coiffure" which is so refreshing after going to barbers who look more like homeless people and less like barbers. read more

I scheduled an appointment for my husband here this past weekend. I didn't think it was possible, but my husband looks even more manly now. I barely post reviews but this place is how every barber shop should be. Love the cut, atmosphere and conversations.

Chop's does a great job. I've tried several barbers in the area and he is by far the best. You can tell Chop's really takes pride in his work. His shop is appointment only and they fill up fast. So don't expect to just walk in and get a cut. I usually plan ahead & book appointments at least 3-4 weeks in advance. Cold PBR's in the fridge are an added bonus. read more

Excellent. Quick, relaxing, easy, great value, good tunes. Why go elsewhere? Appointments are required, but it's easy on-line

A friend had refered me to Chops Barbershop, and the experience was ok. The atmosphere was nice, seems to be trying to keep old time babershop ambiance alive which is nice. The cut itself was good, I am a little bias because I've had the same wonderful barber for 25 years, who recently passed on. He was a great old fashioned barber. I would have liked Chop to use the scissors more than the electric clippers, old time Barbers seem to have alot more skill in that sense, but again the cut was fine from Chop. The part of my Chops Barbershop experience I did not enjoy was some of the "groupies" that sat in the shop, and the fact that a friend entered the shop for a visit (which was fine) but Chop had stopped by cut to give a bro shake, I felt that was unprofessional. Again I'm coming from a very strict old time barber. Also I had friended Chops Barbershop on Facebook, for one day, and was offended by a very opinionated rant on politics and how in his words "Central PA is NOT the place to have an intelligent conversation about politics....it just isn't. Sorry kids." Since I am from central PA I do take offense to that statement and am a little baffled why his shop is located in an area with so many unintelligent humans. Maybe thats why they still go to his shop. read more
