Attending a wedding expo gave me the opportunity to listen to the sales pitch of various caterers. After a day of talking to a number of them, I was able to limit my options to a few which have value features that come at a reasonable price. One such caterer is M Catering and Fine Foods (under Michelin Cuisine and Fine Foods, Inc). In fairness, I initially thought that it belongs to the unreasonably lavish high-end bracket favored by celebrities and socialites. As a matter of fact, one of the first promo cards they handed me was a picture of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera. Proudly, they claimed to be the caterer to the couple's so-called Royal Wedding. Subsequently, however, I discovered that in terms of value for money deals, M Catering compared favorably with the competitors. It promised amenities and decent theme styling with the absence of a multitude of additional charges that makes calculation more complex than necessary. They had just a few extra charges and they instantly showed me how to do the computation. As far as the menu is concerned, M Catering offers a wide variety of international dishes even for their lowest priced package. This offers relief from the usual run of reception menus of which most everyone is tired by now. Lastly, a word of advice to the wise bride and groom: In looking for a caterer do not simply compare the standard quoted prices but take into account the value of the product and the amenities and styling that come with the package. Most importantly, beware of rules and additional charges that the caterer may have inserted among the fine print.

Not to be confused with it's competition, Rice-in-a-Box, I find Box O' Rice to be the superior boxed rice place for several reasons. Firstly, it doesn't seem commercialized and cheap. They cook everything in front of you and though it comes in little packets for the recommended serving size, everything is there. Seafood, chicken, beef, pork, rice, sauce... it's all there. No dehydrated vegetables or tiny cubes of what you can only assume is meat. Secondly, the rice. The rice is just simply rice and star margarine but oh, how could you go wrong with rice and star? Kids born in the 80s would probably remember the Star Rice ad campaign and here it is, alive in all it's piping hot buttery glory. Thirdly, the flavors. Their beef salpicao is a given personal favorite. Beef (actual beef. Not "beef"), mushrooms, garlic... it's all there. Same with their sisig, their adobo, their mongolian rice... it's pretty good for lower level fare. TIP: I made this vinaigrette of olive oil and balsamic vinegar (with a 3:1 ratio), chopped red onions, salt and pepper, and a tablespoon of white truffle oil. Combine and shake it in a bottle then pour over the greens and top with Parmesan. It was lovely! I think adding fresh wild mushrooms would be a nice touch too. I had to call Food Panda 4 times (FOUR TIMES!!!) just to ask them to kindly do a follow-up on my order. They probably did do follow-ups, they just didn't return to me for any feedback. I guess old school delivery style is the safest way to go always. I'd rather call the food store I'm ordering from than to have a third party come in and try to take care of that. Less people involved, less room for mistakes and unnecessary hassles. But I am still willing to give Food Panda a shot.
