We met a couple with a 2 year old chocolate Lab from Chon's Labs and it was a healthy dog with a calm manner (surprising in a 2 year old Lab!). Having met that dog, we decided to visit this breeder, which is about an hour's drive from Omaha. They were very welcoming, let us meet all of their dogs and look at all of their property (in other words, they weren't trying to hide anything). They have an unfinished basement on their farmhouse. They've adapted it for care of their dogs and their litters. It has a walk-out that's easily accessible for the dogs, and sequestered areas for the pups (so that mama can get a break when she needs it). Two things were readily apparent: (1) there was no foul scent from having so many dogs in the buildings, and (2) all of those dogs were healthy (as in no runny noses, watery eyes, scars, limps, etc.) After we decided to get a puppy from them, we visited several more times. Each time it was the same -- clean conditions, no smell, and happy, healthy dogs. As someone else said, they come with a guarantee: You have to get them checked by a vet within 7 days, and you can return the puppy if something isn't right.
