Consistently hearty (large) pasta dishes, personal favourites - the spicy Amatriciana and Calabrese although the menu extends to other Italian classics and a good selection of daily specials including seafood. I'd call it comfort food they serve here. My marinara pizza reminded me of the good ones I used to eat in the old days out in the 'burbs. Nothing fancy about it but plenty of good tomato sauce and ample seafood and expertly cooked. A seriously good old style pizza. Not gourmet, not wood fired, just old style with crusts you loved to finish. I really liked it. The other dishes at the table were good too and there were lots of nods all round. They also make a great coffee here. Mine was a beauty. A final compliment for the servers here tonight especially the older lady who mainly attended to us. The service was fantastic. Brisk, efficient, friendly and at times, witty. It helped make for a very nice night. As I wandered off to go home I began to reflect on how little I really knew. The chances of me coming to a place like this without a special occasion and being wedged into going we're probably zero. It would have been my loss.

Best bahn mi around!! Super fresh ingredients and incredibly cheap (still remember the outrage when…read morethey went for $4 to $4.50 lol). Definitely one of my staple weekend items :) The tiny shop is consistently packed with roll lovers! The baguette is delightfully crunchy on the outside, super soft and pillowy middle. My go to has to be the bbq pork roll with Chilli - the little birds eye chillies pack a punch! Wash it down with a cold soy bean drink is a nice balance :) Lots of other selections on offer: chicken, mixed ham, meatball, tofu. The bakery itself is not bad, pork puffs are another highlight. They do sell the "butter" (some sort of mixture with mayo?) and the pate to take home if you want some treats in the comfort of your own home. Why not try some of the pre cooked foods on offer too?
In my opinion, Nhu Lan is the best place for Banh Mi in Victoria particularly for their mixed ham…read more(thit nguoi) because their pate is amazing. Let's not forget they are well known for their baguettes which are crunchy on the outside and fluffy soft yet slightly sweet on the inside. If you've been to Hoi An or Da Nang in Vietnam, then you'll enjoy the baguettes here. Besides the mixed ham banh mi, I also love their bbq kebab and tofu banh mi. Once in a while, I'll get their french sticks with pate and mayonnaise. I love their pate and mayonnaise so much that sometimes I buy it to takeaway in a separate container so I can spread on my bread on the next day. Other note worthy items include their Banh Pate Chaud, Banh Tieu (Vietnamese Hollow Doughnuts) and Vietnamese creme caramel Flan. You'll easily get your banh mi between $4-5 depending on what you include/add in banh mi. I think it's ridiculously that there are places that specialise in banh mi and charge $7 plus. Banh Mi was designed as a quick and cheap food for breakfast or lunch. The best time to get banh mi or bread at this place is between morning till 12:30pm. During this time, their baguette tends to be the fresher and crunchiest. If you decide to buy their bread on itself own (including the Hollow Doughnut), I suggest you eat it on the day unless you plan to toast it the next day. There are few other favourite places I like to eat banh mi, but this place always delivers consistently yummy banh mi.

I tried their pecan tart and pear & custard tart, and both were absolutely amazing. They had such a natural, subtle sweetness that was mesmerizing. It wasn't overpowering or cloying at all; instead, there was this gentle aftertaste that lingered in my mouth, making me wish it would never go away. The pecan tart had a generous amount of pecans, and it was incredibly satisfying. The combination of the buttery pastry and all those pecans was just fantastic. They also had a great selection of meat pies, which I really wish I could have tried. Unfortunately, I already had dinner plans that day, so I had to pass. I definitely need to come back for the pies next time!

There's lots of buns, cakes, bread, pastries and croissants on offer, but the name of the game is sugar and soft, light and fluffy. The Breadtop experience is the opposite of the artisan bakery movement that is gaining ever increasing vitality in Melbourne. That's not to say that it is bad. It's absolutely delicious and certainly has its place in the great bake-off competition in this town, but it's all style over substance. All the ingredients taste overly refined - very refined flours and sugars, overly sweet toppings, plastic-y cheese bits. And somehow it all comes together beautifully and ends up as tasty, naughty doughy treats. The set up is fun too. Grab a tray and some plastic tongs, whip open the cabinets you like the look of, and select your own pastries and buns. Take your selection to the counter, pay and go. Easy.
