Chocolate Taperia - Churros & Dessert bar

Don't you just love it when somewhere exceeds all of your expectations? Well say hello to Chocolate…read moreTaperia. This little dessert bar opened only about a week ago on Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. I snapped a picture of it while it was still being fitted out, a large pink window with the words 'Chocolate Taperia' and a cardboard sign on the door saying 'coming soon'. To tell you the truth I was excited, I'm always excited to try a new dessert bar, but I was also preparing myself to be disappointed. See, all I'd seen was this large pink window that made me think this was going to be a bit too sterile but cutsey to have that real dessert bar charm. Enter last Sunday night, and the pink window is now joined by a few rustic chairs and tables, and the door now opens to a beautifully lit wooden room with antique style chairs and gorgeous wood work. Hello Chocolate Taperia - I think I'm in love. The menu is hispanic, with delicious desserts from Spain and Latin America. It was created by chef Jean-Claude de Toulouse, and he popped over to our table to explain a bit about the menu. It was a nice touch. The Sweet Tapas platters are great for sharing, but try and tackle one yourself and you'll end up wrapping biscuits up in a napkin to take home for later. They sure can be filling. There are 'warm temptations' perfect for winter, and some seasonal desserts. Chocolate Taperia do a good job at pulling off the whole package. Nothing is half arsed (excuse my french), they've put 100% into the menu, the setting, and the service. I'm always rooting for a dessert place that does more than throw together some crepes, waffles, and a fondant and call it a menu. So I hope Chocolate Taperia gets it's name out there as a firm contender on the dessert scene.

For chocolate addicts, it doesn't get much better than this (or worse if you have the "eyes bigger…read morethan stomach" condition like me). Everything from the pressed metal walls to the booths with mini lamp lights and sheer golden curtains creates an aura of luxurious, dark chocolate, I mean wooden, boudoir. The service has been wonderful both times I have been here - friendly, attentive (sometimes a little too much) and always able to manage a large crowd of people (of which there is always one around). A menu of hot and iced chocolates coming in orange, mint, chilli flavours combined with South American herbal teas, coffee and sodas are a nice introduction but lets be realistic you're here for those 2 pages of chocolate based desserts on the menu. I normally pick a chocolate tapas platter to share which changes on a monthly basis just so I can try combinations of dark sticky chocolate with churros or tarts with macarons and mini mousse pots. "Presentation" is the one word I would use to describe the essence of this place. From the carefully decorated dishes to the interior and the staffs manner, it is definitely worth adding to the "best dessert bars of Adelaide," list.

I was a little lack lustre about returning to Elephant Walk so soon, but with Eggless closed and a quick ring around of dessert bars at 11:40 on a Friday night it seemed they were the only choice open. After a few awkward moves to actually make it into the booths (they can be low down and a bit squishy) two out of our party of four decided on the peanut choc waffles. Ohhhhhh my. Elephant Walk gets onto my dessert bar favourites with these alone. I still wish they'd vamp up the rest of their menu, but at least now I have a favourite to keep coming back for.

A table out the back (eg. outside) was offered which took a little bit of convincing until the waiter mentioned the word 'heater'. Seated around our table under the stars, enjoying the radiant warmth of the gas heater, we certainly didn't feel like we were sitting in our 2nd option! The vegan menu was well-suited to my being lactose-free & the multitude of waffles/banana split/etc was indeed appreciated by the other three. I always love the multitude of tea options & the staff always serve everything with a smile. A great place to chill & wind down and leaving the previous dining establishment to enjoy dessert here invariably makes the night last longer!

The home style iced teas and flavoured cold milk drinks are a splash of Heaven on a summers day, and the dessert cake selection are the perfect end to a autumn nights city strolling and the chocolates and coffee are prefect in winter. The gift boxes are the prefect thing to take back to the office when you need to bribe the admin assistant (they're just a little too good to take home for mum) if they last the distance... This is the kind of place I'll take any bitter ex-pats and east coaster visitors who need to see that Adelaide's got talent, and so far everyone of them has gawked in amazement and walked out with a smile.

I'm not going to tell you what it's called either; otherwise you'll all rush down there, buy some and then they'll run out and I'll be pissed off. And you wouldn't want that. Would you? It's a must-do on a Friday and/or Saturday night after dinners out ... or perhaps simply order UberEats if you're planning on staying in!! They're made with their house milk chocolate, white, or dark. Very sensational!! You can also choose to have them with almond milk, Bonsoy, or Zymil. They seem like they're always busy on the evening, even on weekdays!! Which is good for them. Most of the time seems rare to get an inside table. So be prepared. I haven't tried the desserts here at all, unfortunately, so I cannot fill review at this stage. But their gelato is really good!! I've tried several different flavours. The Lemon Curd Blueberry is absolutely degistational!! The salted caramel is very sweet for all those sweet tooths .... I know there's another caramel flavoured one which isn't as full on and lighter in colour. The only down-fall about this particular store is they don't serve take away gelato when ordering at the counter. Apparently it's purely for UberEats orderees. Aside from that I'm not sure if they even serve waffle cones or bowls .... think it's purely glass dessert bowls when ordering gelato at the counter. From experience this isn't the case at every St Louis store. Gouger Street and Glenelg don't have this policy. I'm future I'll likely extend this review but this is all I've got. Don't pass this place up. St Louis is definitely on the rise!!

Nestled in the quiet block of Grenfell St. just steps from Rymill Park this gem is quite abuzz with crepe making energy; there are two types gallettes (savory) and sweet to choose from. we chose gallettes to share, one La Traditionelle ($11.5: ham, egg sunny side up, and swiss cheese) and one Saint Malo ($14.5: ham, sautéed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, basil, and olive oil). You can ask for any egg preparation, I chose scrambled. Opened for long hours each day they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The tiny bistro is a powerhouse of excellent, friendly customer service. It is adequately staffed with friendly counter help who care about your dining experience. The three times I have been there in the last month indicates consistent excellence and quick, though not hurried service. There are well prepared croissants (prepared in site daily) in addition to an authentic pain au chocolate. I plan to eat my way across their dessert case and will keep you posted on my progress. TWO THUMB UP - this is a 'must do' destination, especially when in need of respite from the day-to-day stresses of life. Treat yourself to a French stay-cation without leaving the CBD.

It's not a particularly big store, but it is chock full of delicious bakery items. It has all the usual suspects (sausage rolls, pasties and a huge range of pies) and also stocks every type of biscuit, cake and bun you could imagine. I love the apricot slice and my son's a fan of the snowballs (jelly cake, rolled in coconut and filled with cream) - special occasions only, of course. I also loved the display of edible meringue people. They've started making the Christmas ones already. It's a little pricier than some of the franchise bakeries, but I like to think I'm buying quality and supporting an independent when I shop here. The staff are friendly and seem to manage to serve people in order, even when there are a dozen or so people squeezed in. If you're not doing a mad lunch-on-the-run, there are a couple of casual tables and chairs strewn out the front where you can savour your baked goods.
