This field is a little hidden gym. There's a free track and it's a full track so it's a good place to get some runs and training in. There are several unhoused community members to the left of the track on the lawn area and there are quite a few that walk down the stairs and through the field but none of them bothered us. We didn't feel unsafe. Now the parking, that felt unsafe . We had to park on the street and boy was it BUSY. Now I'm just assuming that was because there was an event taking place at the facility immediately across the street and perhaps they didn't want anyone from that event parking at the field but I'm not certain. If they open the gates for convenient, safe, free parking, this is a solid 4 stars for what it is. read more

One of the few public tracks of which I am aware in South Bay-Long Beach area. Not just a track but fields for football, baseball, cricket, soccer. Pretty well maintained. The only complaints: when it rains it floods when it rains and takes about two-three weeks before it opens again. There is an un-housed population there but generally they will stay out of your way. My wife generally feels safe running there though there are creeps from time to time. read more

My go to place to get that run in. I pretty safe place to get out and hit the track. I used to see a lot of homeless addicts here and now I only see very few if any. The track is well maintained. Usually after a hard rain the track will be closed for clean up fur a couple days. Also this track is open to the public so don't get stressed if there is a Walker in the lane your using. Just step to the left or right and go around them. Keep it friendly. Another is you might see a school team practicing here, or an up and coming Olympian, hey ya never know. Great place to ball up and play football. And to work out the lanes on the track very good.

For the negative ratings, it's not that bad, there are bleachers and stairs if that's your kind of cardio. It's a football field with a track. Homelessness is a problem, almost everywhere. Wasn't bothered when I was there Sunday. Not bad 4/5 read more

5/5 idea 1/5 horrendously incompetent execution The concept of this public track and field is great. However, poor design and execution render is much less effective than it could be. Its design and upkeep are exemplary of why the City of Long Beach has trouble staying competitive with the other beach cities in socal. Here's why the design sucks: The track and field is built on a drainage basin. Not a problem in and of itself. They could have easily partitioned off a portion of this field to be the basin (lower in elevation), and graded the track and field above that basil. What did they do though? They built the "all weather track" and fields all at the same elevation. When it rains, nearly the entire track and field becomes a lake. Dirt spills over onto the track, ducks migrate in and shit everywhere, and despite having pumping stations at the south end of the track, standing water remains there for weeks afterward. It doesn't matter that the pumping stations are there because they didn't grade the field in a way that water wants to drain that direction. A crew of public works employees come in and need to clean it up every time after it rains. I can't imagine how much money is wasted on the upkeep of this place. Here's why the execution sucks: City of LB, as far as I can tell, has no plan to address the homelessness in this public space. I've seen permanent shanties going up, people living out of the restrooms, a syringe on the field, and territorial fights break out on a regular basis. The problems aren't specific to this field, but it's a symptom of city's overall lackadaisical attitude toward addressing homelessness. I don't claim to have an answer for how to tackle the problem at large, but as far as I can tell, city of LB doesn't have any plan either, and that's kind of their job. One idea for this area in particular would be to simply get tough and expel the homeless from the area. Another idea would be to set up an area designated for people to stay on a semi-permanent basis. Or maybe they could set up a system whereby people could put in hours cleaning up the track in order to earn time staying there. There are dozens of things the city could do, but they seem content to do nothing in this particular instance. Here's what city of LB should do to rectify this situation: First, whichever engineers are responsible for approving this design in LA/LB public works should publicly apologize for wasting tax dollars, then be walked out of whatever office they work in. Second, The LB leadership (mayor, parks and rec director, whatever) should also make a public apology, and provide a breakdown of how much money it costs each LB resident to do the upkeep on this park. That info should be published here: http://www.longbeach.gov/park/park-and-facilities/directory/chittick-field/ Third, the LB leadership should put together a plan to renovate this field once again and do it right. Maybe they should contract the work to a city that knows what they're doing, like literally any other beach city in socal that deals with similar water drainage issues. They should also provide regular updates on the progress of this effort on their website. Fourth, the city of LB should address its problem with homeless encampments in this field. Maybe provide a dedicated space for individuals like this, or provide a program whereby the homeless in the area can work in order to earn time staying here. Or maybe there's a more suitable location that exist already. As far as I can tell, the city of LB is complacent in their ownership of this property, and that's a tragedy. read more

Love working out at Chittick Field. I see cleaning crews in the morning keeping the track clean. Not very packed, but depends if there are high school teams working out , still not a problem. Everyone is respectful and friendly. So thankful it has stayed open through quarantine as it has become my safe haven!! read more

I've come here to use the track and this is a great little spot to workouts of many kinds! There's a rubber track, a football field inside of that, bleachers, and plenty of grass surrounding that. There's a small parking lot for the field, but I imagine it would fill up quickly if there are a few soccer games going on. When I went, I luckily had no problem snagging a spot. This is a clean park that can be used for so many workouts! It's a definite go-to if you're looking to get some track workouts in. read more

I like this track! Great for outdoor workouts. They have a full track, bleachers, sand & grass. You can easily make a great workout and the parking usually isn't terrible. It's located next to LB city college. read more

Not sure why all these people are out here bashing this park. My experience here was phenomenal!! Came here on a sunday morning. This is a time when a lotta people would be at the park. But there were just a like 6 people on the track. Its perfecr for people who wanna practice sprints as there are not a lotta people in the way. One thing i would say they csn work on tho, is the bathrooms. There are a lotta homeless people around. That can lead to other things. They should fix that. Other than that, its a phenomenal track!! The restrooms are the most stinkiest smell of urnine that I ever smell. It's a shame of a beautiful track being new but the maintenance it's very poor taken care of. The city need to clean the restrooms not just put on toilet paper it need cleaners bleach and also the bleachers. Everyday! Closed due to rain multiple days after it rains. Closed for "cleaning" (all day!?!?) multiple times a month. Who decided it was a good idea to design this so it is completely unusable after any rain? I get the stormwater control aspect but couldn't it be designed to keep the track open at least? Too bad because this neighborhood is severely lacking in open recreation spaces like this for running/soccer/football/lacrosse. Alas the backside of the bathrooms are shielded from the street so prostitutes/johns, drug dealers, homeless bathers all have a place to hide out from the police. read more

This place is my running go to spot. I m very happy that the city of Long Beach made this, once party place into a healthy spot. Lately, I had notice lots of people setting up their tents inside. The restrooms sometimes are lock when they are suppose to be open. I m guessing is due to vandalism and broken doorknobs. Just notice the other day someone ripped the fence. Other than that, this track is an amazing place to walk, job, run or play soccer, or football. read more

It's a great spot to workout... All weather running track around a football field, open field for playing soccer, and bleachers. There's limited parking but additional parking on the streets. I've seen the police patrol the area so it should be safe, but I would bring a parter since the track is out of view of the street. read more
