Caveat Emptor re Dr Fountis' diet. Yes, you do lose weight. Very quickly. However, consider ALL of the costs before you commit to doing this. 1 - The focus of her program is weight loss, not FAT loss. After I lost 60 pounds in 4 months, I found that I also lost a lot of muscle. This is a starvation diet. You actually wind up eating 700 to 800 calories a day. 2 - Another cost was hair loss, for which Dr Fountis would not treat me. She said there was no proof that my hair loss was caused by the diet but she did say to use a certain shampoo. Actually, what I found on my own was that my body was ridiculously low on a certain element because of the strict eating plan. 3 - The financial cost is very high. 4 - Weight lost quickly does not stay off on its own. Dr fountis is magic maker. She is one of the best doctors i have ever came across. I had been struggling from PCOS and infertility for past 8 years. I went on this diet in 2010. It was the best thing that ever happened to me! I followed it so strictly. I was able to go from 200lbs to 140 in 4.5 months! Ever since then I have maintained my weight and have not gained more than 10 pounds back but I quickly get my butt in the gym and work that off if I fluctuate. To this day I use this diet in modification for maintenance. If i ever want to lose weight I go back on it for a couple of weeks adding small things like peanut butter..hand full of fruit so I don't go completely back into ketosis un-watched. A lot of my hair did fall out but it grew back and I have not had any issues. This diet is really hard but if you want it you can do it and it WILL work! This is a tough one for me to review. There are many pros and cons to this weight loss clinic/program. Here we go: I needed to lose weight in January of 2008. I was 226 lbs and 5'4". It was obviously a problem. I had no idea where to go, and then my gyno said she had heard of a doctor in Scottsdale who ran a fantastic program that had positive results. I checked it out. Over the course of 2008 I lost 70 lbs. It is a supervised prescription diet that consists of store bought groceries. You weigh all your allowed food out. You keep a food diary. It is low carb, low cal, low fat. If you can stick with the tough food rules, you will lose weight. This diet works for everyone that can stick to the uber-strict food rules. But it is VERY difficult, and not everyone can do it. Especially if you have food issues. Pros: -you can lose lots of weight -I have maintained a 70 lb loss for 1 year. Cons: -Expensive, I spent about $2500 just in medical expenses. They don't accept insurance. -Eating out can be tough, you have to buy a travel scale to weigh your food. -The weight loss is FAST, which can be scary for some, it was for me. In fact I never made it to the goal weight the Dr. had chosen for me. She wanted me to lose a total of 101 lbs. Which I felt was too much. I lost the drive to do the diet, and walked away when I reached a 70 lb loss. I know of another patient who did the same thing. -Blood work is done every 2 weeks, literally to make sure you aren't dying. -You only get to see the doctor if there is something wrong. Otherwise you get her sister who is a dietician. She does not have the the best bedside manner. -People can and do gain all the weight back. (This diet is not a lifestyle change, although there are behaviour modifications that occur during it. For instance I now journal all of the food I eat.) I know of one person who lost 90 lbs on the diet and gained it all back within two years. He didn't keep up with the positive changes he had made, and went back to eating in the unhealthy ways he had given up. Overall: It was the best thing I've ever done in my life. However now, I'm sort of on my own regarding weight maintenence. Like any weight loss program, results not typical/use at your own risk/results may not be lasting. But it is better than gastric bypass in my opinion! Tips: Dr. Fountis will not even schedule an appointment until you have turned in your entire medical history for the last couple of years. Her office will give you a list of forms that it needs. I have been in the office when desperate fat people have almost been in tears trying to schedule an appointment, only to be told that their medical records had not been received yet. She just won't do it. So make sure you have your primary care physician get on the ball. read more

I went to Dr. Fountis many years ago for her weight loss program. I started it and within the first 2 weeks I had lost 18 pounds. I was excited at the loss and that motivated me. After my first round of blood work, the Dr. called me at 8pm and told me that I was losing weight too fast and I needed to be on medication because I was now at high risk of gout and kidney stones. That terrified me. I followed the diet for 4 months and I had lost 60 pounds. I'm not going to lie I had never felt better. I had tons of energy, my skin looked amazing and I was never hungry. However, it was EXTREMELY strict. I was limited on everything including sugarless gum. During the required break from the diet, I had pain in my side and back so I went to my primary care dr. I had a severe kidney infection. I told my dr about the diet I had been on and he told me that was most likely why I had kidney issues now when I had never had problems before. Now I get kidney infections at least once a year. When I brought it up to Fountis, she denied it had anything to do with her program-even after I reminded her of the kidney medicine she prescribed for me. I ended up gaining all of the weight back. He took me to and from autozone to pick up a new battery and changed it out for me. The process was quite tedious because we didn't have the proper tools to work on the vehicle, but it didn't stop his act of kindness. Dr. Fountis is the only doctor I have ever come across that delivers on every single promise - even in writing! I went into this as skeptical but was desperate and willing to give it a try. I am so glad I did. Since starting in July I have lost over 80 pounds, and that includes a 3 week break (female). The diet is simple and easy if you are committed. It is hard if you are looking for excuses and good ways to cheat. Stick with the plan as she prescribes and it really does work. I participated in Dr. Fountis' diet plan. Over a period of four months I was able to lose 70lbs and finally get back to a healthy weight after 10 years of being overweight. More importantly I've been able to maintain the weight for what is now 7 months. The plan is rigorous and you have to follow it exactly but when you do it is relatively easy to stay on. The first week is a little tough to get used to, but after that, the only impact is low energy. I would recommend it for anyone who needs to get back to a healthy weight. The staff is friendly and accommodating and Dr. Fountis is a background with Cleveland Medical which made me so much more comfortable that the diet was legitimately based in good medical practice. It's also affordable. If you look at the price by pound lost it's cheaper than any average diet out there in the market like atkin's, south beach, weight watchers, etc. Overall it was a very good experience and I was extremely happy I did it. read more

This place sounded amazing the first time I went in! I started the weight loss program, lost 60 lbs in 3 months which I was so happy about. But I also lost about half of my hair! And Dr. Fountis told me that was "normal" and that it will grow back. I don't know about you but losing half of your hair doesn't sound normal, and for a doctor to say that, kind of shady. I stopped the diet because I was scared of the hair loss. I have now gained all my weight back plus 30 mOre pounds. And Dr. Fountis hasn't even called once to see how I was doing or what happened to me! They don't care about their patients all they want is money! I am so unhappy with them, I even recommended my cousin to Dr. Fountis when I first started the diet and the same thing happened to her! she is a horrible doctor and the diet is ridiculous! I wish I never went to her! Advice for her, don't tell your patients it's normal to lose half of their hair! Especially when I went to my primary doctor and they said its because of malnutrition! I personally know 4 women who went to Dr. Fountais and all have lost a lot of weight. I wanted to go and met with her for my initial appt and went and had the initial tests done that she requires but when I was getting my last test from my general PC he told me he didn't respect what she did and if I wanted to lose weight I should go to Africa and starve myself there. He said at least I'd get a trip out of it.... I felt bad and so never finished the program but saw another woman I know well suceed on it after that. Its mainly small protein meals and veggies - low calorie with the first two weeks being the hardest but it gets easier after that Im told. Im disappointed that my doctor teased me when all I''ve done is put on more weight and I get lectured by him that I need to lose weight... Id still like to go back.. but now I have to get the tests done all over again. Since I've been diagnosed Hasimotos - its hypothyroid, I'm not sure if she'd work with me...
