The Abbey Resort - Harbor View King room

    The Abbey Resort

    (555 reviews)

I had an outstanding experience at The Abbey thanks to Illeyana--also known (and now forever…read moreremembered) as Ms. Goldfish. From the moment we walked in, her energy, attentiveness, and genuine friendliness set the tone for the entire visit. She was on top of everything--quick service, great recommendations, and always checking in without being overbearing. It's rare to find someone who makes you feel both taken care of and completely relaxed at the same time, but Illeyana nailed it. The nickname "Ms. Goldfish" fits perfectly--she kept things fun, memorable, and just a little bit legendary. If you're heading to The Abbey, do yourself a favor and ask for her. Customer service like that is hard to come by. We'll definitely be back!

This resort has taken a significant downturn within the last 10 years. It truly is work to stay…read morehere. The best part of the trip was the time we spent outside of the hotel. From the moment we got here we were inconvenienced. 1. We checked into our room and there was no hand soap, tissues, or conditioner. 2. There are only a few entrances to the resort instead of having an entrance to each building to make it easy to bring stuff to and from your car. 3. The gift shop is crazy expensive, bottled water is almost $4 a piece and a case of beer is $80. 4. The TVs in the room are completely locked down and you're unable to screencast Netflix. Your choices are 30 basic channels of infomercials and $25 movie selections that are mostly from the 90s. 5. The room service for food ends at 10pm and the vending machines were bare, there is no where to go for a late night snack. 6. If you go to the restaurant to order food to go, they won't do it. They'll refer you to calm room service for your room forcing you to leave a tip. 7. If you want a cart to bring your luggage to your car, a bellhop has to supervise you and watch you do it the whole way. 8. On our last day the boiler was down and there was no hot water to take a shower before you check out. 9. We asked for a plate at the front desk to warm up food in the microwave (only one shared microwave is available for each building), and they couldn't find any. In short, this place is like a glorified motel 8 that doesn't truly respect their customers. Their operations are only convenient for them and nothing about the stay was easy. We almost felt like we were in a prison. I did enjoy the stay 10 years ago but we were very disappointed by how it is currently ran.

My wife and I stayed in the standard luxury room (vs. a suite or room w/fireplace) and it was big. We got a bottle of wine and rose petals on the bed along with free Coke and Sprite. Close access to Williams Bay. Only reason it isn't a "5" is that we stayed on the weekend - and all the parking spaces were taken up because the parking lot is shared with the Belfry Theatre - and a concert was going on.

It began on the morning of our second day. At 8:00 a.m. it sounded as though someone was sliding furniture across the floor, followed by LOUD banging of doors and stomping up and down stairs. We were in room 101, which is right off the exit toward the room. The opening and slamming of the door was completely obnoxious! The "restaurant" on the property had a menu date of early March, which means it had not been open since. I chose this location because it prides itself on the quiet serenity of an "adults only" boutique hotel. This was NOT the case. The staff had zero respect even after I texted the front desk staff about the issue. They offered us a late check-out, one free night for future use, or a gift card for the restaurant (that was not open). I declined and stated that I will leave my review accordingly and would not be visiting the location again.

We waited for 45 minutes, but it was absolutely worth it with live music and a Santa Claus walking around to entertain the kids. Tremendous bartenders and friendly staff made the wait short. Food was executed well with great sides and excellent cocktails. A solid fish fry with lots of options and a great coleslaw. My wife loved her ribs. This definitely feels like the sort of place that only locals know about and everyone is welcome. We would highly recommend.

Not only were we rushed all night, but our server literally did not smile once. When we politely asked for a drink to be fixed that had wrong liquor, she seemed BEYOND irritated. Her attitude remained despite our best efforts to be responsive & friendly. Anyway...the "best for last" was the manager coming over to "see how our meals were" at the end & ending with a polite reminder to leave as they have a 2 hour limit. We were in fact getting by ready to go (just finishing dessert) but this was the last straw for us as far as enjoying the night. We jumped up immediately & he stammered a thank you. When we got outside we noticed a) there were only a very few if any still waiting, and b) it hadn't even been 2 hours (despite us ordering 2 drinks, apps, fish, and dessert)! We were very quiet and polite all night so maybe they thought we wouldn't mind.....but we all walked out & said "Well that's the last time I'd visit that place"! I've been a waitress so I'm very sensitive to most criticism of service, in general (people can have very unrealistic expectations and often have not had this very demanding role)....this, however, was beyond warranted. My guess is it's popular because of its size- so the wait is huge in summer because it's so small--so the wait makes it seem desirable? And it's on the lake. If it's the water you love, try The Village in Delavan!!! Great food, beautiful setting, stunning decor & fab service. The manager is also very responsive. Duck Inn is also a nice option in the area-old school and great service. Wish I had gone to one of these old faves for our one night out this fall.

My pregnant wife, 10-month-old daughter, and I were forced to cancel our reservation the day of our stay due to both my daughter and pregnant wife contracting COVID-19. What followed was a masterclass in corporate callousness that I wouldn't wish on anyone. We called the hotel first thing in the morning and were explicitly told we could cancel and receive a full refund without issue. Relieved, we then contacted Amex Travel (through whom we booked) to initiate the cancellation with the hotel. Suddenly, the hotel completely reversed course and DENIED the cancellation despite their earlier assurance. When I called back directly, they maintained this denial with zero explanation for the contradiction. Here's where it gets truly unconscionable. When we asked if we could reschedule to a different date due to the COVID situation, they flatly refused. When we asked if they were truly comfortable with a family actively infected with COVID coming to their property, they said we were "more than welcome." Let that sink in, they would rather have actively COVID-positive guests (including an infant and pregnant woman) potentially expose their staff and other guests than show an ounce of flexibility or compassion. Throughout multiple calls, I repeatedly requested to speak with a manager. Each time, I was denied this basic request. Apparently, their management team lacks the courage to face dissatisfied customers or take responsibility for their staff's contradictory statements and heartless policies. The most infuriating aspect? Their website boldly states: "Please know that we take the COVID-19 situation very seriously." What an absolute joke. They're perfectly willing to welcome actively infected guests rather than work with a family in genuine medical distress. We were forced to eat the $400 cancellation fee rather than risk the health of other guests and staff, something Lodge Geneva National clearly couldn't care less about. This establishment has shown they value every dollar over basic human decency, public health, and guest safety. Their contradictory statements, refusal to honor their initial commitments, and willingness to welcome COVID-positive guests reveals a deeply problematic institutional culture. Save your money, protect your health, and find literally anywhere else to stay. Lodge Geneva National has proven they don't deserve the business of families who actually care about the wellbeing of others.
