Opposite what you could loosely call Birmingham's Chinese quarter and on the edge of the Rag Market, Chinese Cultural Exchange sells, for want of a better phrase, Chinese stuff.
When described like that, it would be easy to assume the stock would be tacky, the kind of thing sold to tourists as a souvenir with no real value apart from novelty. However, the stock in Chinese Cultural Exchange is surprisingly tasteful, and I have found something that's intrigued me every time I've been in. The stock ranges from Chinese books and DVDs to Chinese works of art and Chinese ornaments, such as those nodding cats which are supposed to bring good luck. They also offer Chinese calligraphy services. Most of these products are so specialised that it's hard to know whether the prices are good or not however, if you are interested in Chinese culture then this will probably be a shop that interests you. read more
