chicken and broccoli on a paper plate
Greg S.

Let me start by saying, gone are my preconceived notions of small town restaurants! And this place, China House Restaurant, has laid that to rest! This is the first of many more visits to come. My wife and I split a large sesame chicken, and lets just say we were fighting for seconds. Can't wait for our next visit.

Boneless spare ribs; if you think this looks good, looks can be deceiving. This was no good

Good luck getting someone to answer the phone. They're rarely open when we try to order takeout for dinner. So frustrating.

Best Chinese I have ever had, honestly. I have had very expensive Chinese food and this beats it every time!

Is this place still open? Every time we drive past it is closed. We used to enjoy their food but it was closed the entire Holidays.

The struggle is real when you're looking for an authentic mom-and-pop Chinese spot on a Monday;…read moremost in the area are closed! That's why finding Happy Garden was such a relief--it's truly the last of a dying breed. Tucked away in a small town, Happy Garden offers that classic dine-and-takeout experience you just can't duplicate. Stepping inside and tasting the food is an instant trip back in time, delivering those unmistakable classic Chinese takeout flavors from the 90s. Everything on the menu was a hit, from the rich and comforting Egg Drop Soup to the perfect Sweet-and-Sour Chicken. The quality is consistent, traditional, and deeply satisfying. Adding to the experience, the customer service was warm and genuinely good. For food this classic and comforting, I am more than willing to make the 30-minute drive. If your craving demands authentic, old-school Chinese cuisine, Happy Garden is the destination.

I've been going to Happy Garden for 2 years now, ever since I moved to Gibsonville. It's been my…read morego-to for Chinese take-out. The food is always really good -- though to be fair, I usually stick to the same few things: orange chicken, dumplings, beef and broccoli, and their rice. For Mother's Day weekend, I was craving Chinese again and decided to branch out and try the 'house special chow mein.' Because they offer both chow mein and lo mein on the menu, I did a quick search (ChatGPT and Google) to make sure I understood the difference. Everything I read said they're basically the same kind of egg noodles, just cooked differently -- lo mein is soft and saucy, chow mein is tossed in sauce and lightly fried for a crispier texture. Even on Happy Garden's own website, it says under Chow Mein that the dish comes with rice and egg noodles. And "house special" usually means a mix of meats and veggies, which sounded perfect. When I got the order home, I opened it and realized the chow mein was literally just cabbage and other veggies, with shrimp, chicken, and what looked like duck. No noodles. Now, I could've let that slide -- I get that every restaurant does things a little differently. But this was the first time I've ever gotten chow mein with zero noodles. So I decided to call and explain what I expected and what I got. The woman who answered was hard to understand, and after I explained the issue, she took my name and number. When she repeated it back, it didn't sound right, so I repeated it -- and she snapped, "umm yeah, that's what I said!" I apologized and said it just didn't sound right, I was just clarifying. She said the manager would need to call me back and review the order. About 5 minutes later, the manager calls. I start explaining what happened, and she keeps interrupting. So I pause and let her finish -- she goes on about how they make their chow mein. I say, "I get that, I'm just saying mine didn't come with noodles, and I expected noodles based on what chow mein usually is and what your webs--" She cuts me off with "What website!? What website!? Where did you order!?" I tell her, "Ma'am, I ordered from YOUR website, happygardengibsonville.com or whatever. It says under the chow mein category that it comes with rice and rice noodles. So that confirmed, in my mind, I'd be getting noodles." Now, if she had just calmly let me finish and then explained that their chow mein doesn't come with noodles -- just those little fried noodle chips in a bag -- I would've said, "ah, bummer. Can I place an order for lo mein?" That would've been fine. But the tone, the attitude, the defensiveness, the unwillingness to even hear what I ordered and why I expected what I did -- that's what killed it for me. So unfortunately, even though they're right down the street and I've always been happy to support local, I won't be going back. They don't deserve my business.

I went in to check on our order and they had just told my husband it would be 5 more minutes. We got it 20 minutes later and when we got home the dumplings were cold. While we were there two different people came in for their order that was called in and were told they didn't have their order. Also, another man came to pick up his and he waited for a while then asked how much longer it would be. They said another 10 minutes and he canceled his order. It seemed that the only orders they were filling were Door Dash and not online orders (that must be paid for ahead of time) or call ins. When I asked why it took an 90 minutes from the time the order was placed until we got it all they could say was they had been very busy. No apology or trying to make it right.

Another factor was, even though I was the only one in there when I walked in, many groups of people started coming in either to pick up takeout or to have lunch inside. They did not disappoint I ordered the shrimp Penang curry, which is not on the menu for lunch, but it was what I wanted based on a photo from someone else. The flavors were amazing and it had some kick, just an FYI, if you don't like any more than mildly spicy they also offer brown rice, which I forgot to order, but nonetheless, my dish was delicious.
