I've lived directly behind this Chinese restaurant for about 6.5/7 years and have been here multiple times over the years, and every single time -- it's been disappointing, bland and tasteless. I've thrown out more than half (or more) of it every single time. The prices are ok, but it's tasteless. The sauce kind of has flavor but not really. Look, I'm not trying to be harsh here. I understand it's a small business and they are just trying to make a living - but in my opinion, it's just so tasteless/bad and the customer service (phone and real life) sucks and they don't care at all, in my experience and opinion. I've tried many different items over the years. I'd estimate 20 ish different menu items. Various chicken and meats dishes, egg rolls, Rangoons, rices, sauces, meal deals etc. I also have a plastic bag full of all of the fortune cookies I've kept over the last 20 years, lived in several major metros all over the world, and dated several incredible women from Asian cultures who regularly cook this food. I love Asia. And I love Chinese food. But, not this place. The best food, and best tasting item here at China Gate on Anderson/Gunn here -- is the fortune cookie that comes wrapped in plastic and comes from a different company entirely. Definitely not celiac / gluten free friendly. **Advice to the business** Please add some salt, some fat, some sugar, some spices and maybe a little bit of care to the food so it tastes better (or, at least like something besides raw texture). It is so tasteless/bland/bad quality and it has been for several years, and several residents here at St James Crossing (we live quite literally directly behind the restaurant, and walk here sometimes) also complain whenever y'all leave the menus on our doors. Worst ever !! Ordered online with Uber eats and the general tso didn't arrive in my order. We also ordered green delight which is green beans, broccoli and snow peas but it came without green beans. When I called the restaurant, they accused the Uber driver of taking out our general tso and said sorry they were out of green beans. So , does that make it right to still send an incomplete dish and not inform me? A phone call for a swap would have been courteous. They also refused to credit me- the lady on phone said she would call me back after she talked to manager in 10 minutes. I called her in 15 minutes and asked why she didn't return my call ? Her response was " because my English not good , and I'm tired!" No fortune cookies were given with order and the beef broccoli had sauce on side. I went here for lunch last week, and got the Chicken With Vegetables lunch special -- a pretty common dish at Chinese take-out places. It comes with pork fried rice and an egg roll. I figured I'd know what to expect. Well, I was wrong! This is the best Chinese take-out I've gotten in the Tampa Bay area since moving here in 2011. In the pork fried rice, the bits of pork were really flavorful. The egg roll was better than average but nothing special. The entree, though -- the sauce was tasty, the chicken was good, and the vegetables were fresh and crisp -- fresh and crisp strips of vegetable in my Chinese take-out I say! There are plenty of Chinese restaurants in the area and this is not one of the better ones. When a restaurant serves you fried rice that is dry, and you can taste the oil used, it's never a good thing. I ordered with it General Tso's chicken which was heavy on the sauce, but edible (hence the two star rating) but the soup was awful. It came with wonton soup and one of the wontons had rancid pork in it so bad I had to spit it out. The other tasted fine. This leads me to beleive they had an old batch they were trying to get rid of, but I was the unlucky person to get the old wonton... Overall my lunch was subpar. It's dissapointing because I live close and would have given them good buisness if the food warranted it. For now I will not return. read more

This is better than your average Chinese takeout. They have great options that I have found all to be enjoyable. The last time I had the chow mein and my friend got the beef and broccoli. I loved the chow mein and think it is the best entree they have to offer. The beef and broccoli was very good as well. They didn't skimp on either the beef or broccoli and that is typically an issue with most Chinese restaurants. The service is pretty and good and they are pretty fast to get your order together. Food is cheap pre-packaged generic food and the restaurant staff visibly don't respect or care about what they put out the door. Numerous times I've totalled up our order and found it much less than what we were rung up ($5.25 + $5.25 does not equal $14.50 even WITH tax). They're the closest chinese place so I gave them a few shots and the final straw came with the last order. I placed my order by phone and they quoted me a price of $16. Whatever, was cheap chinese and that was for 2 people. They said food would be ready in 15. Fine. We waited. 40 minutes went by and we called the restaurant, asking where our food could be. They said the driver was on her way. The place is 5 minutes away from our business. 10 minutes later, I called back to tell them our lunch break was almost up and we still hadn't gotten our lunch. The guy on the phone yelled in whatever language he speaks in then said in english "She is on her way." Our food finally got there, 50 minutes after ordering it. Considering she took 50 minutes to get our food 5 minutes down the road, I wasn't going to tip her. I gave her a $20 and she claimed she did not have change. I said fine and handed her a credit card and she started to write down my number with paper and pen. Sauce is good...Beef and broccoli is well seasoned to our tastes and the chicken lo mein is a staple food on our orders. However, the service leaves much to be desired. Often, the person answering the phone speaks unintelligibly and quiet. The parents (owners) are notoriously hard to understand; my spouse refuses to call ahead. In person, the people who work here could use some customer service training. My tip: don't use the online ordering. I'm surprised to see the reviews on here because this is my favorite Chinese spot in the area. They're always quick, and the food is great. Their fried chicken is great if you're a picky eater. The rice is always good. If I'm in the mood for something else I get the beef n broccoli lo mein combo which comes with your choice of rice the lo mien and the beef. It's so filling and delicious. My boyfriend is a picky eater but he loves the orange chicken but recently tried the sesame chicken and has a new favorite. They even serve tostones (fried plantains) now like the ny spots, which is a great deal because the serve like 20 for $3 or so. The only reason I wouldn't give it a 5 star is because although they have seating area I probably wouldn't eat there the atmosphere is like your typical Chinese spot nothing enticing. I would also not recommend getting food right before closing just way to greasy (more then usual). I've had family and friends come visit and say it taste almost as good as ny Chinese food. read more
