I gave it two stars for the investment they made to upgrade the facility. However the food although it is now served hot, it is still not great. There are typically so few customers there that they don't out alot of food out. And I honestly wonder if they take the trays at the end of the day and refrigerate forage following days initial food. I check back about once every year to see if they have improved...unfortunately the food has not so I eat at Panda house. The restaurant isn't as nice, but the food is much better there. And the owner is much friendlier and understands customer service and small town friendliness. I'm sorry the most I can offer is tel stars. I'm due for another visit in a month so if anything has improved I'll be sure to update my review after that visit. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. I should've trusted the 2-star rating before walking in -- but I figured I'd give it another shot. Big mistake. I was in there for maybe five minutes, took two bites, and instantly knew something was off. The food tasted absolutely nothing like it used to -- bland, greasy, and just bad. I went up front and politely said, "Hey, I only took a couple bites, it just doesn't taste good." The lady at the counter looked at me and said, "You want it to taste American and you don't like it, you have to pay something." Excuse me? I was blown away. She literally said I had to pay because they were going to throw my plate away. Then she followed me back to my table and told me again I had to pay -- just because I sat down with the food. So guess what? They actually charged me $5 for taking two bites of that disgusting mess. Unreal. The customer service was rude, the food was terrible, and the whole experience was embarrassing. It's no wonder the place was practically empty -- now I know why. Save yourself the disappointment (and the $5 "two-bite" fee) -- go anywhere else. read more

I went there to try the buffet and was pleasantly surprised. This restaurant has had a bad reputation but it's completely redone and it is lovely and inviting. The food was absolutely fabulous and plenty of options. Even soft serve for dessert. The employees were constantly stocking the buffet and wiping any spills. STAY AWAY, out of towners!!! You have been warned!!! Came in on a Sunday, right at 5pm. We are from out of town, and after driving around trying to find a "non-fast food" restaurant, we settled here. I should have read the yelp reviews prior to coming here. It was by far the WORST Chinese ANYTHING I've ever experienced. And I'm not one to go out of my way to complain, on the contrary. But I have nothing positive to say about the experience. When you walk in, it's dated and unusually quiet. Not even music playing. But I've been to such places and the food be out of this world. Not here. I ordered a hot tea, an iced water, and the buffet. From the buffet I got sautéed green beans (over cooked/stale), pepper chicken (only breading- no chicken to be found in the container), orange chicken (about the only ok thing on the buffet and reaching to find SOMETHING good about this buffet), lo mein ( greasy and stale), an egg roll (over cooked yet cold), a crab Rangoon (the innards looked like oozy icing. I literally gagged on it). I tried to eat one of their wee donuts and they were stale and rock hard. Did I mention the hot tea wasn't even a Chinese/Asian tea?! IT WAS LIPTONS! It was ok. We usually don't do buffets later in the day, but we went at 8:00 pm. Person greeted us at the door and was very friendly. There were probably about 6 other tables there. My food was ok. I stick to lo mein and fried rice. That was pretty good. It had been there a little bit, but it was ok. They had boiled cabbage and that was good. However, the boys in my family got more of the meaty items and they did not like it. They had things like sesame chicken, garlic bread, Cajun chicken, chicken on a stick, etc. Buffet tables were steaming, but the food wasn't very hot. Employees were messing around trying to throw something over a wall. Instead of them messing around, they could have been cleaning. Price was pretty good. It was $51 for 3 adult and 2 kid buffets. They do have notices on the table that there is a 15% surcharge on excessive waste. We're staying in town on our way to the Black Hills. So, if we ever come back through here, we will not be back. read more

This place is just iconic in my family's food history. We all ate here a single time and got very ill and now we just laugh when we drive past it, wondering how it's still open. Based on everyone else's reviews, I'd say it wasn't a fluke that we had a terrible experience here and I'm shocked that it's still running after all this time. The buffett itself is a bit dodgy at times if you dont catch the food fresh. If you do catch it at a good time thats one thing you may still need to be worried about as people have gotten sick eating there before. If you want food at any other time than noon an 6, then you'll be eating some very dry, uninspired, half cooked buffet items. A health inspector once came and gave them a 4/100 before it closed down for a few months to pull itself together but it really hardly made a difference. The bathroom is a no go at all costs. The walls reek and everything is very sketchy from the threatening wall art, to the sandpaper roll they pass off as toiletries. Every chair, every table, and every booth is uneven, past its prime and needs some work. Some of the window decor is 90's comedians as it used to be a Golden Corral with a weird theme before they bought the place. The employees are nice usually but they will bicker at eachother and scream often, and once I saw one of the owners kids get paddled, which wasnt a very fun thing to watch. Four out of one hundred is probably a good placement for the China buffet, and visitors to Pierre definitely should take their business somewhere a little more higher class. read more

Went here for lunch a few days ago. Typical Chinese buffet, you come for the quantity not quality of food. The place was a little dirty but cleaner than average. It appears that their investing money in their place they had a new Mongolian grill which was not open yet. Food was hot and fairly fresh which was a positive. The food was average for Chinese but this is pierre SD so it was fairly good if you consider that. I want to come back and try the Mongolian grill when its open. read more

Today was my first time to eat lunch at China Buffet. They re-opened today having been closed since mid- March for extensive remodeling. If I could give them more than 5 stars, I would. I recently moved to Pierre from the Seattle area, and I have no doubt that China Buffet could give any of the Seattle Asian Restaurants a run for their Money. The Buffet food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and the remodeled restaurant was beautiful. I tried a wide assortment of the dishes, and was really surprised that each dish was really tasty. If you want a great meal for a great price, try China Buffet - you won't be sorry! read more

Since Pierre only has two places that serve Chinese (or Asian food), China Buffet ranks as the 5th best. I haven't found any dish that is served here that has a flavor. The chicken dishes are always dry and tough, like a weird attempt at chicken jerky. The service is bad, even for a city known for rudeness. We had 4 adults and weren't offered refills until the check was presented, and it took 15 minutes to get those brought back to us. If I could make a suggestion to the owners, it would be to sell this place to people that enjoy the food service business, and have an idea of how to cook flavorful Asian food. Do yourself a favor, go a few blocks to pierre st and eat at Wonderful House. Food is much better and service actually exists! I go to this buffet once a year just to see if it has improved at all....but so far...no dice. Food sits for hours...could be days for all I know, service consists of bringing a drink and the bill...usually at the same time.
