Our tour guide Keenan. Sneaky selfie!
Lana Y.

This was our favorite excursion by FAR!!!! It was nice to have a small group and to get out farther away from the cruis ship and see the sights. We had a long and awesome hike through the forest. It was more ups and downs and rougher terrain than I was expecting but a good surprise...ha ha!! Keenan didnt talk our ear off, he let us enjoy the sights and told us the history of things when we drove past them. If we ever take another cruise anywhere I need to ask if Keenan is a guide cause he travels around a lot. The raft "ride" that we went on was very chill and we got to enjoy the beautiful views. The transportation to and form places was great and safe. Thanks Keenan!

On the way to the Chilkoot Trail!

We (myself and 8 family/friends I was on a Princess Cruise with) did the Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float Trip, and love, love, LOVED it! It was awesome that it was a small group, so it was just us the whole time. Kane was an awesome tour guide and really tailored the trip to us on the fly. The drive to the trail was gorgeous. He pulled over so we could take a picture, and he told us some history along the way. I wasn't expecting the hike up & down to be as intense as it was (I mean, we were on cruise with most 50+ year olds), but it was very doable if you're used to hiking. Of course the flat terrain was easy. Kane was honest about what he knew and didn't know, and helped us pick some berries to eat while we hiked. The group I was with is normally pretty active so the hike didn't take us long so he was able to show us a beaver dam too. The float trip was really just that: a float trip. There was no white water whatsoever and he did all of the steering, but you're still outfitted with boots & a life vest, and he gave us a safety talk about the raft (he gave us one before hiking too). Again because we were making good time, Kane beached us so he could talk about the surroundings. At the end of the tour they gave us a cookie, water, and a warm beverage. Then he drove us back to town, offering to drop us off wherever we wanted to go next.

This was my favorite excursion for Alaska thtough Carnival Cruise Lines. Josh and John were very informative both on kayaking, safety, wildlife facts, and naturists details. They have a great demeanor and both have an awesome sense of humour. There were only four of us out on the mirror looking lake that day. The smaller party made it much more fun and it felt as though we were just ganging out with a bunch of friends out on the lake. I loved learning about the area and they have some really great stories!! Would love to go back someday. Thanks Josh and John!!

Our female guide and raft rower (?) was safe, conscientious, and more than able to row and steer our raft.

Off the grid might be an understatement…read more People say, "it isn't about the destination, its about the journey, man". In this case, the destination, Davidson Glacier, was stunning, but getting there was the real adventure. When we disembarked in Skagway, we didn't have an excursion pre-reserved. We wanted to get away from the endless jewelry stores and tourist traps and do something active, but didn't want to take any of the helicopter or small plane trips (long story). So we looked over the options offered by a local tour company [1] and decided on the Glacier Point Wilderness Safari. It was described as a high speed jet catamaran ride followed by a nature walk and canoe trip to the edge of a glacier. What we didn't realize is that we would leave civilization far behind and embark on something more unique than we realized. We left the metropolis of Skagway (pop. 1500 in high season) on the catamaran for an hour cruise to the remote area of Glacier Point. On the boat, our guide started telling us about the area and the group of hardy and humorous souls that live on the island during the summer months. You see every summer ten people live and work on the island in a little community with no running water or electricity while taking visitors to the glacier. And when the weather turns bad, which it invariably does in Alaska, and the trips are canceled, they have the place all to themselves. And boy was it beautiful. We were the first group to visit after a 3-day storm and they were really happy to see some new faces. Half the fun of the excursion was talking to the guides and asking them about their daily life on the island and what brought them there. It was fun to imagine what it would be like to join them for a few weeks in this exquisite solitude, but I know my limits. One of our family jokes is that I'm a 'state park kinda girl.' The canoe trip was a bit of a disappointment because we are a family of paddlers and although you are in a 30' Voyager canoe, the paddling itself is brief and ceremonial since the guide operates an outboard motor. And based on the skills (or lack thereof) of the motley crew of tourists, the motor is a good call. I wouldn't categorize the trip as active since you do far more sitting than walking or paddling. It was extremely cold, so take them up on their offer of extra layers. Unlike our other visits to glaciers, we got close in and time stood still as we gazed at the intense blue color, fragments, cracks, crags and landslides. Alaska is a land constantly on the move. Most glaciers are receding at an alarming rate, so there was awe tinged with sadness that it will never be the same. You've got to take it all in while it lasts. They had silly jokes, songs, provided history about the area and facts about glaciers. It was totally interactive and you never got the sense they were just going through the motions. All in all, one of our favorite outings in Alaska. And it was WAY OUT. [1] We booked through M&M tours, but others booked in advance through their cruise ships although this tour was not an option on Princess Cruises excursion list.

The Lodge was located right off the small dock. They had a quite spacious land around the lodge, and even thought it was grey and misty out, we could still see across the water and a few cruise ships. As soon as we entered the lodge, it was so warm and welcoming, it was great! They offered mimosa, and of course, we didn't say no. They also had other drinks like Alaskan Beer, which my hubby also had in addition to the mimosa. After a nice mimosa, the "naturalist" staff took us for a quick walk outside. Then, we followed the guide and the wooden signs towards the waterfall. It was not very far, and we could hear the gushing water from nearby distance. Once we arrived at the Waterfall Grotto, it was so powerful and strong, it reminded me of a Seinfeld Show when George (a.k.a. Marine Biologist) said "The sea was angry that day my friends"...LOL. Even our guide was amazed at its powerful flow, he said that it is normally more calm, but with the rain, it has become a monster. After a nice little walk to the waterfall, we went on a rainforest hike. The guide took us to the top of the hill, we got to see another waterfall, also powerful and beautiful. The view from up here was really nice, nothing but nature. After the hike, we returned to the lodge, and it was time for Dungeness crab and shrimp boil! The staff had it all cooked up in one pot, and was just getting them onto a HUGE bowl. It was oh-so-good-for-your-soul food! Then, it was time for dessert. They had big marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate, calling out for S'more lovers, and decadent double chocolate brownies. We learned a lot about the rich history about Burro Creek, and the beautiful nature surrounding the area. We took in lots of fresh air and delicious food, and had loads of fun! This was THE best excursion that we took during our Alaskan Cruise.

My Mom, brother and myself rated this as our #1 excursion on our Alaskan cruise as a result of the excellent team. All are to be commended. The facilities from boat, dock, lodge, hiking trails were pristine. The hospitality was warm and friendly. The food and drink offerings were plentiful and delicious. My favorite moments were hiking on well marked trails and feeling the loamy soil underfoot and sitting on the outdoor porch drinking wine by the suspension bridge gazing to the mountains surrounding Skagway. As stated by the staff "you will not want to leave!"! I inquired about conducting a Yoga retreat here and hope they'll be able to accommodate overnight guests soon. Thank you for making this possible. Peace to all.
