Chicken Bacon Ranch Quesadillas (gluten free)
    Rachel O.

So we went to Chili's for science: culinary field research. This was our first time at this Chili's, & maybe my second time at any Chili's ever, so we went in with an open mind. We sat at the bar & I noticed right away that it felt like we were under a spotlight. I know I shouldn't have expected perfectly ambient low-lighting from a chain restaurant, but I at least expected to not feel blinded by the lights. Honestly, sunglasses & a hat would've made the experience more pleasant. It was busy in there (Friday night) & the ladies behind the bar were HUSTLING. They still blessed us with waters & a basket of chips with salsa relatively quickly. As we were browsing the menu, we noticed that there were no prices next to the drinks. Drink prices by request only? That's a really strange practice. I'm not into it. I like to know what I'm getting myself into from the get go. Regardless, we ordered the Spice-A-Rita & the Presidente Rita (the Spice-A-Rita is $10 & the Presidente Rita is $9.50 - I know that now) & I requested a gluten-free menu. Not surprisingly, most of the menu is glutinous. There's the option to substitute a corn tortilla here & there to make a dish gluten-free, which is what I did. I ordered the chicken, bacon, & ranch quesadilla on a corn tortilla & my partner ordered the triple dipper. While we waited, we sipped our actually-pretty-decent drinks & snacked on the greasiest chips I've ever laid my hands on. When our food arrived, it was equally as greasy. I laid my napkin on my quesadilla to soak up some of the grease. My partner's triple dipper looked ... Horrifying. Particularly the "mozz block" which is an abomination of the natural world & should be treated as such. Perhaps ejected light years into outer space for the safety of the human race. But we feasted & ordered a second round of drinks from the very cheery & funny bar staff. When I asked for a "stupid amount of salt" on the rim of my margarita, they absolutely delivered. To entertain our inner iPad children, we played around with the little device that was in front of us. We played an arcade style game of golf & then challenged other Chili's patrons from across the USA to multiple rounds of trivia. We lost spectacularly to someone in St. Augustine over & over & over again. When we finally paid, we had wracked up a $90 tab. After a $20 tip, we were out the door, laughing at ourselves & our Chili's experiment. Conclusion: We will probably never be back for food, but we might come back for margaritas & kiosk trivia. TLDR; Greasy food, very nice bar staff, decent drinks.

Ennojoyable dinner in the early evening. Was a little crowded but we were seated and served right away. Pleasantly surprised when our food came out pretty quickly. I had read one person's previous comment about their fajita not coming out affixing. That wasn't the case for me, the cast iron plate was sizzling and steaming. Hot and nice, although I would recommend they make their tortillas a little bigger so as to fit all in the 4 they give you. For the amount of people there, the atmosphere was quiet and good.

I've never had a wait time here. This and salsa are free, that's a plus. Chili is awesome (no beans). That always have a great margarita selection. I usually go for the $5 margarita, and it's flavor is always changing depending on the season or holiday. We we're a table of four and the food came fast.

Great Bar with Great Food…read more Oh how much I love the Half Keg. The quintessential old school dive bar, with amazing clientele and most important of them all a grill right behind the bar. Cheap beers, great music, strong drinks, friendliest patrons, all in a building that looks like a keg that was cut in half. Beyond cool spot. Tip: Delicious burgers and hand cut fries Tip 2: this place is situated between two small building so you can miss it. They also have a decent craft beer selection. I can give the place enough props. It consistently gets voted best dive bar in south eastern CT and for once these publications are not wrong. Love this Place Thanks

Half Keg Tavern is a historic neighborhood tavern that opened in New London, Connecticut in 1946…read more The tavern is housed inside a converted Quonset hut, which was likely picked up cheaply at the conclusion of World War II. The Half Keg stands out from other Connecticut drinking establishments in that it is technically a tavern as opposed to a bar. What's the difference? Bars can serve just about anything (including hard liquor), whereas taverns (once known as "public houses" back when residents were still British subjects) are places that can serve only beer, wine, cider, and food if they choose. At the time the Half Keg opened, there were maybe 700 taverns in Connecticut. Today, less than 10 Connecticut drinking establishments operate under a tavern license. A number of different owners have come and gone at the Half Keg, including longtime owners Ron & Maryann DiNoto. Since October 2016, the Half Keg has been owned and operated by Teresa Stomberg and her son David Donatello. The tavern serves a variety of domestic and foreign beer as well as a food menu of fresh handcrafted burgers, grinders, and a variety of bar bites. I recently visited the Half Keg for lunch while I was in the New London area. I arrived not long after they opened for the day. I pulled up a seat at the bar and began to peruse the menu. I first ordered a plate of "Fried Pickles", which were on the specials menu that day. Served with a dipping sauce, they were hot, crispy and very flavorful. I washed them down with a draught pour of Samuel Adams' "Summer Ale". Afterwards, I ordered a "Garlic & Onion Burger" (garlic & onion seasoned burger on a a garlic-buttered roll, slice of raw onion, lettuce, tomato) with a side of "Hand Cut Seasoned Fries". Don't expect anything particularly fancy here. It's just good, old-fashioned home cooking. No frills, no fuss; just fresh ingredients and good flavor! I washed my burger and fries down with a draught pour of Two Roads Brewing's "Two Juicy" (Double New England IPA). That lunch really hit the spot. I'd be interested in trying out one of their grinders on a return trip. If you're in the mood for a good sports game paired with a cold beer, good food, and the company of friendly locals, then head to the Half Keg!

They share the parking lot with Jasmine Thai. When we walked in I have to say the decor is gorgeous. I love the boutique look to it and beautiful bar with black background. The hallway to bathrooms is beautiful including the bathroom. There were 2 bartenders. One of them came to our table to take our order. Tables are low coffe table styles with velvet pink accent chairs. On the other side by the stage they had some regular wood high tops as well. The ceiling was highly black with low dimmed yellow lights. I have to say, it was very hard to read the menu and had to use my phone flashlight. Other than that it looked nice. The place was feeezing. There were man at the bar with their coats on. I took mine off but had to put it back. It was the one thing I definitely didn't like about this place. If I return it will be in the summer. Now let's talk food. The food looked great and tasted very good. I love their entire menu. It was tough to decide. We tried the spring rolls; tuna tacos and Shrimp Himmapan. For dessert we had the Pistachios ricotta cake. The description given by the waitress was not correct but it was good. I would call this a cake. It was more like a cheesecake type dessert. But flavor wise was great. We will come back with friends once the weather is better. Don't want to risk being so cold like that again.
