I was first aware of Kindred Hospital in Dayton, Ohio as an occupational therapy student. They…read moretake the worst of the worst patients in terms of diagnoses and those patients that no hospital will take but they need hospital care. A few years later, I moved to Florida and had the misfortune of having my boyfriend sentenced to Kindred Hospital in St. Petersburg. I was upset and with obvious good reason. He had a diagnosis of IPF and I knew this was not good. The facility in St. Pete isn't as nice as the one in Dayton but still... each room is private, the therapy is minimal. My boyfriend was never offered a shower. I think the bathroom is just for appearance' sake because physically, he could have done the shower, he just would have required supervision and, of course, 02. Was it because the aides are just used to people being bed-ridden? I have no idea. Why couldn't occupational therapy do it? I have no idea. Instead, when I got off work, I'd go to the hospital, give him a bed bath and change the sheets myself (which the aides gladly provided when I asked). The meals are delivered and if you want to eat the food warm, eat it quick because it cannot be heated up. The tray of food cannot enter, leave and enter again because of germs. I get that but if that's the case, deliver the shit hot which does not happen (nor does this happen in any other hospital or nursing facility, to be fair.) Being a former aide, I can attest that it is hard work getting patients up, doing 2 or 3 showers a day... however, we are talking about Kindred here. I refer you to the second sentence of the first paragraph. So is it too much to ask for timely answering of call lights? Yes, it apparently is. Ice water is an issue because the aide has to get it. I cannot tell you the number of times I ended up walking to the nurse's station, cup in hand, to interrupt conversations between nurses and aides after 15 minutes or longer of waiting for his call light to be answered. He was moved to another room so that the AC could be fixed. I can't remember it being broken but anyway, he was moved to another room. The call light and the overhead bed light chain were on the opposite side of the bed. This wouldn't be a big deal but for the fact that he was blind on that side (and nearly blind on the other) and the cords were not long enough to reach the bed. The bed couldn't be moved because of the medical equipment. So I tied sheets to the cords and it worked great. But why did I have to do this? Where is the common sense? Anyway, he was eventually moved back to the original room which brings us to the picc line fiasco. A picc line was placed which worked great. But one night he was rolling in his sleep and the place where the line was located began bleeding. Why a nurse or an aide wasn't checking him throughout the night will never be known. He called me and was very upset that he had turned on the call light a few times and was told that this would be looked into. I was being very patient and told him to give the nurses a chance. A few hours into the day shift, he was told that the nurse wanted to 'wait and see if the bleeding continued' before changing it. I did not find this appropriate and immediately called the administrator. At approximately the same time, my boyfriend posted the picture of the picc line on facebook. The administrator called me back and to her credit, she did sound concerned and she said she would check into it which I thought was a great idea, however, I told her she might want to hurry because the picture had already made it on facebook. The bleeding was taken care of after that within an appropriate time frame. Neither he nor I ever received an apology from the nursing staff. Kindred's care is no different than other facilities I've worked at or visited. I tell patient families all the time... stay involved with your loved one's healthcare. Do not assume that the staff cares. Do not assume your loved one is getting the care you think they are. Kindred's care in St. Pete is worse, overall, than other facilities I've worked at or visited. This is a shame because so many of these people are at death's door and can't speak, etc. Basic human decency will not be provided unless you or the patient speaks up.

Trying to find a patient in this facility is a very challenging task. The phone menu isn't adequate…read moreand when I dialed into one of the menu options I was put on hold for 11 minutes before I hung up. Very poor customer service...

The front desk ladies were always a pleasure upon check in, offering snacks and water. You immediately notice how clean and tidy the facility is, with masks and sanitizer available always at the entrance. Given my father's condition and special needs, I was concerned that he would decline but luckily, his care was superb. The nursing team, in particular Patricia and Licia (amazing care from those 2), along with Doreen, Abner, Daisy, and several others (sorry can't recall all their names) were rockstars! My dad's care required much patience and skill and they went above and beyond to provide that. CNA team was also wonderful in particular Ariyana (absolute sweetheart), Umar, Joe, Courtney, Irene and Diana...what an awesome team. They work very hard and I often wonder how many times a day do they get a thanks! Additionally, Monserrat from food services would come almost daily to check up on him and ensure his meals were enjoyable which they absolutely were, and just chat with him for a bit to make his days more enjoyable. She was an angel and we couldn't be more grateful for her extra care. Lastly, but just as memorable were administrative personnel: Kendra from case management and Maria Miranda from patient services, WOW what a pair of aces. Both were reachable, approachable and always willing to help at anytime. They really went the extra mile to provide support and ensure all the questions I had (which were always a lot) were answered and the family felt secure with his care plan. Maria even went as far as following up after his transfer to see how he was doing...unprompted by the way. Amazing services all around from a great team! Thank you Kindred team for your great care of my father!!
