Review Highlights - Chikos Restaurant & Cafe

They have real decent crispy fried cassava chips as well- for something a little different than standard potato wedges.

Apart from a few go-to restaurants which have been here since I moved to Auckland 20 years ago, the…read moreBirkenhead dining scene really doesn't have much to boast about. Prices aren't extravagant, but neither is the food. Walking along Birkenhead Avenue, Mulan stood out as something that would otherwise have belonged in the hip and upcoming Mt Albert scene with Chinoiserie, Kiss Kiss and L'Oeuf. Casually embellished with thick knotted ropes around the entrance and on the ceiling of the dining area, the setting is thoughtfully simple. Without calling on famous interior designers, it was enough to elevate the dining experience up a step. I came for a late long lunch with a particular craving for Thai food. Thai and Vietnamese cuisine are always high on my favourites. Maybe not so much for coriander haters (who apparently blame it on genetics for this inexcusable pickiness). As a first step to tame the insatiable hunger, we had the Mama's special of steamed buns with sticky pork. Two really weren't enough between two people! The bun was thinner than I wanted but it was bouncy and the flavours were saturated into the meat. As recommended by another foodie I ordered Golden Shield - sweet and spicy squid, flash fried with chili jam and kaffir lime. If you love strong flavours, it is a must order! The combination of sweet, spicy and sour was punchy and appetising. Along with the chicken jungle curry, we easily demolished two bowls of coconut rice with the spicy kick. If you are a spice wimp like me, I recommend staying firm on ordering "mild". As a local, I'd love to go back. It's my type of hangout: casual with tasty food. Thumbs up!

We left New Zealand in June & I have had Thai numerous times since and nothing compares! Seriously, every time I cross my fingers hoping it will be as good and it never is! I was taken to Thai Issan on a date, and was really amazed by the beautiful decor, and the climbing Hoya plant that spiraled all around the room. Creates a sense of exoticness about the place. The food is sensational, I would recommend dining in over takeaway any day, so you get the luxury of the experience. Service was kind, and generous. My mouth waters as I try to describe the taste sensations you will experience at Issan, some favorites of mine are Pad Priew Waan Pla which you can have mild or hot, which is Gurnard fillet in a stir fry with a lovely sweet and sour sauce accompanied by pineapple, tomatoes and cucumber or Gang Dang Goong, a spicy hot tiger prawn in coconut milk, and red curry with lychee. Exquisite taste sensations, you will get hot and sweet together and these will blow you away. Be sure to enjoy some Thai beer or Bring your own wine, and toast to this Thai culinary delight.

Tiger Burger: Korean fusion brought by a couple joining the best of both of their backgrounds…read more Tucked in the midst of the Grey Lynn shops, it's great to finally have a fast food option that caters for people to sit in. It's frustrating when you want to try all the yummy takeaways but live too far away to take it all the way home to then eat it cold! The menu is short and sweet! 4x burgers and a weekly special. This is probably the 1st time in a while I haven't been able to finish my burger whilst snacking on the chips. Although I love the concept of the burgers and flavours, as per the menu says "all patties served medium rare, unless otherwise requested". Sadly my patty was not MR, which meant getting to the end of the burger it left a rather dry taste in my mouth - hence why I couldn't quite finish my burger. What is great about the burger is the bun - which sounds odd, but the texture is great. It really holds its weight with the amount of sauce in the burger - it doesn't fall apart in your hands or become soggy which is a huge tick in my books! Who doesn't love a Fried Chicken Burger! - Awesomely huge, although could do with just that bit more sauce. The Kimchi Fries were great value for money, eye appealing and super crispy which stopped the chips from going soggy even under the sauce and toppings. My only qualm would be that I was expecting fatter chips - I am just biased I can't help it I am just not a skinny chip person. The food is served as efficiently as if ordering takeout but in this case you can enjoy a nice sit down with a cold beer on the side. Rating: Food: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Value for Money: Very Good

I love kimchi. It…read moreall started back in high school, where a group of us would watch the same Korean drama over and over again. In one scene, the family makes kimchi. I had never seen anything like it and it was definitely a sight to watch! Prior to watching, I wasn't accustomed to Korean cuisine and hadn't even tried one single Korean dish. But the kimchi process was fascinating, and since that day, I have been (secretly) obsessed with Korean food and of course, kimchi. Cabbage never looked so good! Fast forward to today, where you can buy kimchi from various Asian stores in Auckland, but the most exciting thing I have discovered of late is Tiger Burger - burger and fries heaven... but with a twist! Kimchi in their burgers and fries! The restaurant has been open for a while, but I only managed to go a few nights' ago. I am so glad I did, because everything about Tiger Burger is awesome. Firstly, we loved the simplicity of their food and drink menus. For food, there are four burger options - beef, chicken, pork and vegetarian (plus a special every week), a few sides (fries and bites) and two desserts. Their drinks list is short too, with a few boutique beers, wines and cocktails (I tried their special of the week - 'Bae Bae' consisting of pear puree, El Dorado gold rum, ginger liqueur and cranberry juice, served in a martini glass. It tasted like pink grapefruit to me, but it was very refreshing). We also loved their non-alcoholic drinks - a must order is their Fentimans botanically brewed ginger beer! For food, we ordered the Kimcheese burger, the Vegetarian burger and of course, their famous Kimcheese fries. They were all WOW, in particular the Kimcheese fries (which I shall attempt to make at home!): Kimcheese burger - grilled beef, sauteed kimchi, aged cheddar and chilli mayo. This burger is part of Metro's Top 10 Burgers, and I can definitely see why. It's Juicy. Messy. Spicy. It oozes cheese. There's sauteed kimchi (woop woop), and the buns taste like sweet doughnuts. What's not to like about this burger?! Kimcheese fries - we absolutely LOVED them! Definitely my favourite fries in Auckland to date (sorry Poutine from The Fed). Imagine fries, topped with kimchi, aged cheddar, creme sauce, kimchi ketchup and spring onion - absolute heaven. Definitely order these! Vegetarian burger - this burger was top notch. The crispy shiitake and kumara patty was not dry (unlike other vegetarian burgers in Auckland) and was accompanied by a creamy slaw, yang nyum sauce and mayo - the perfect balance of flavours and very tasty. We also loved the interior - it's clean, the seating is wooden benches/bar stools (but it suits the place), the decor is black and white, with animal prints on the walls and there's Korean signage. The vibe is also super cool, from the music to the friendly and welcoming staff. I enjoyed every minute of my time at Tiger Burger and I'm sure you will too!
