Grateful to be able to get a haircut again! Dom at Chick's has been my barber for over ten years and I will gladly drive 30+min to get my hair cut here. I just enjoy the no frills attitude, the meticulous cut and the sports loving old school American Italian Buffalo attitude here. Dom always knows how to cut my hair, shave my neck and he still does a straight razor/edge on my neck every time. During Covid, I seriously missed this place and didn't know how to survive. Was grateful when I could come back with a mask and now I feel like it's back to normal here. The floor got a little renovation too and it looks like the place got a fresh paint job too. Dom is a barber like what a true old fashioned barber was in the 80s and 90s. I've been going to him for years. He's always down for a conversation on a bunch of subjects. Or quiet if that how you are. He doesn't forget anyone, always asks me about my son if he's not with me and still tells me if he's seen my friend who came with me the first time I came 5+ years ago. Dom is truly an awesome person who loves what he does and does it to the best he can every single person, every single day. The second time I ever went I was about 2 minutes late after he closed and was already locking the door on the way home and reopened just to give me a haircut and never cut corners on anything. I've been with him since then. I can't tell you how much a haircut costs because I always give him a $20 and tell him to keep the change as a tip. I believe it's $16-17 but well worth it. read more

Like my previous barber, I found Chick's by way of outstanding Yelp reviews. When I was left without a barber because of his sudden closing, I was set adrift while what minimal hair I have left bloomed. I set myself the task of searching anew, and found Alex's and others' reviews compelling. And like so many other Yelper-accredited businesses, this one was right on. Domenic was friendly and welcoming, and after seeing his many posters hanging on the walls, I knew we'd have a lot to talk about. I asked "Are you a fan of the Beatles, or do you just have the posters up for the hairstyles?" He is, in fact, a fan. The cut was just what I needed. Neat and fast with the clippers, trimmed around the edges, and straight-razor on the neck. Dom is a true craftsperson. I'll be returning, as long as I have hair left to cut. read more

Dominic is the kind of guy you never cheat on. As many guys can attest, the relationship between a man and his barber is a close one. When I first moved to Buffalo, I was genuinely concerned I wouldn't find someone who I really clicked with. Thankfully, Dominic is a pro. You know the guy loves what he does and considers it an art. He uses such precision and care when he figures out what kind of haircut will be the best for you. I meekly admitted that I'm trying to hide my widows peak, and he knew exactly what to do. Along the way, because he knew I was nervous, he gave his honest opinion of what would look best and still factored my opinion in. His shop is a complete representation of his personality. Classic oldies playing from his iPod, historic sports and music memorabilia, and warm welcoming feel. A standard haircut with an optional neck shave comes out to 12 bucks- which is a steal for the quality you're getting. Be sure to bring cash because he doesn't accept cards. This makes me incredibly sad to have to write this review. Dom, the owner and only person cutting hair when I was there, was great. Gave me exactly the haircut I wanted and never rushed. He paid attention to the details. I was in on Monday morning and there was a person in the chair and one waiting. He probably took 30 minutes to get to me, but it was worth the wait. I planned on being back every month. Until, that is, I sent my son to get his haircut there the next day. My son is mixed race (I'm white) and has the same big soft curls that my off-the-boat Irish grandmother did. However, he was turned away by Dom who claimed he was unable to cut that sort of hair. To be clear, my son does not have tight kinky hair. It is curly, but no curlier than many white people's. (think Justin Timberlake curls). I went back and asked Dom about his refusal. He claimed it had nothing to do with race -- and he might even believe it -- but I simply cannot imagine in a million years that if my son's hair were red and his skin were white that he would have been turned away. Obviously, I will never get my hair cut there again. If a barber is too good for my son, he's certainly too good for me. Dom is a meticulous barber. It's impossible for me to believe that giving a 10 year old boy with curly hair a trim was beyond his ability. He simply preferred to look that boy in the face and tell him his hair was so different that he couldn't cut it. There's no sign that says "whites only" hung on the door, but there might as well be. read more

On a Monday a week or so back, I had walked halfway down Hertel towards my usual barber only to find it closed. Discouraged, I started to walk east, back home. But I passed Chick's, I stopped, and I thought for a moment. Despite my affections for my other barber, I did want myself shorn. I had walked all the way down Hertel from Main on a chill February afternoon. "Why not?" I said. After visiting Chick's, I won't be returning to my previous favorite. Let's start with the fact that the interior of Chick's actually inspires confidence. It actually looks nice. It doesn't look sterile like a Holiday Inn Express, fancy like a spa, crappy like a deli, or kitchy like your grandfather's house. Stop and ask yourself how many of each you have visited. Instead, it boasts delightfully modern colors, unobtrusive and gentle lighting, and a few individual touches (such as a vintage Edmonton Oilers Wayne Gretzky jersey) that showcase the owner's personality. The proprietor's name is Dominic, and he somehow made *me* look pretty damned good when I walked out, a pretty amazing feat if you ask me! The cut took longer than I expected, but it wasn't because he was gabby (though he was pleasantly fun to talk to). Rather, he would step back to examine his handiwork, applying sufficient attention to detail to masquerade my bulbous mass as an actual human body part. Chic's does provide a few extras. Dominic will perform gratis a straight razor shave behind your ears and along the back of your neck. Talc powder is applied standard. Did I mention that all this costs a meager $12.00? Do yourself a favor and give Chick's a shot. Like me, you may find yourself awkwardly avoiding your former favorite spot. read more

Recently new to the area and in need of a hair cut i went to chicks as it was only a minute from my new place. Awesome hair cut, gave me exactly what i asked for. Straight razor shave around the ears and the back of the neck really makes the whole experience.. Hair cut was only $12 too!
