    Aquarium World - Hammer coral

I don't shop at Aquarium World often, but I am so thankful for their knowledge and expertise. They…read morehave helped us with problems ranging from an axolotl that needed a new home to an old goldfish with serious swim bladder issues. They never "gate keep" their knowledge or make you feel bad for making some mistakes with proper fish care. They teach you how to do better.

I had a pretty disappointing experience at Aquarium World recently. I returned a few cheaper fish I…read morehad purchased earlier and opted for store credit so I could upgrade to some different species that cost more. That part seemed straightforward at first, but the process quickly became frustrating. When I used the store credit to buy the new fish, the employees working that day--who appeared to be new--started explaining that if the new fish died, I wouldn't be able to return them. What made this especially frustrating is that this policy was only explained to me after I had already paid for the fish. If that had been clearly stated beforehand, I would have appreciated the chance to reconsider the purchase. The new fish were completely different species from the ones I originally returned, and I actually spent additional money beyond the store credit to buy them, so it felt odd to only hear about this restriction once the transaction was already finished. What made things worse was how long the checkout process took. The employees seemed to struggle with basic math when trying to calculate how much store credit to apply and how much change I was owed after the new purchase. It took several minutes and multiple attempts before they finally figured out the numbers, which made the whole interaction feel unprofessional and awkward. Overall, the experience left me with little confidence in the staff's training and customer service. I understand that new employees need time to learn, but the combination of confusing return explanations, being told important policy details only after paying, and difficulty with simple calculations made the visit frustrating. I hope management invests more in training so future customers don't have to deal with the same issues.

"Tank It Easy" helps me take the ideas I have for my home aquarium and realize them while making…read moresure I maximize my enjoyment of it while sharing it with others. First of all, the owner and head of the design team, Brian, always provides excellent advice on equipment, aquarium fish, invertebrates and especially corals - and the supply in his store is outstanding! (Take a peak at the picture I took of a scene in one of the shop's display tanks as an example). What's really great is his vast knowledge on the behavior, dietary needs, and compatibility with other tank mates you can choose. He's so generous in helping you learn and he does so while always thinking of you first, and what's right for your aquarium and your budget! I sincerely feel I have a friend in the business, which is why I prefer to "Tank It Easy"!

A ton of variety that no one store could compete with. They are willing to share a ton of information about fish and how to maintain it. I was nicely greeted by the store and willing to help. Since I am doing a fresh water tank, I am limited although they had about ten or more tanks with these kinds of fish. I was able to pick a several fish with the common neons and tetras. I did a bunch of watching and reading online and so I have tons for good questions that they were able to answer. I enjoyed seeing the other tanks as well. Great place for anyone that is serious about their tank. Please note that they open only two days per week and so you need to make time to visit. It's worth your wait.

My husband and I have kept both salt and freshwater tanks for years (and years), throughout states…read more We've been in Chicago-land (Oak Park) for 17 years and have seen some of our favorite (knowledgeable, awesome) Aquarium stores come and go or move farther away: Old Town Aquarium, downtown; Tony's Ocean Design (which will still love and recommend--shout out to Tony!!!!--but it's a hike) and the place on Devon (also a hike) that we used to frequent but closed years ago. The rest of "aquarium" stores that we've been to, are, imho, sh-t. You can imagine our surprise when this seemingly little "hole-in-the-wall" store that we thought nothing of when passing by in car, originally, turned out to be SO wonderful and SO close (side note: Oy! We've been going there a lot...too tempting!). And Eddie (Eddy?), the owner, has worked at like all the places I've just mentioned. It's a new store but he has *years* of experience, is super smart, and lovely in terms of the time he takes with people. He also has ample, knowledgeable staff, which is needed for this many fish tanks. I'm confused about the one-star review, and my guess is that person's fish died because they don't know enough about not overfeeding or water conditions or something...is her "son" in charge of feeding, and, if so, how old is he? We've bought both fish and corals from here and they've thrived. There are clear markings (for saltwater) for when the fish/corals have arrived to the store, and you can ask anyone there about extra care requirements and needs. I've not noticed anything "expired" either. As for clutter: It's on the smaller side, so yes...it can be tight. BUT: Eddie is in the process of moving the store to a bigger space just a few blocks away (even closer for us, Oy!). I highly recommend this store as the best new fish store we've found in quite a while. We will happily buy from them again. TIP: Make sure you sign up for membership, as that gives you perks and discounts. But even that said: Their prices are ridiculously reasonable (though I'll take the discounts, Eddie, with thanks!). Highly recommend! This spoken from two people who have spent quite a few years with home tanks of both kinds. Go visit! You won't be disappointed.

Turns out I was doing a lot wrong (like over cleaning) but the lady helping me (sorry forgot her name) was extremely helpful and really seemed to love sharing her knowledge. I honestly cannot wait to go back and explore the shop. Highly recommend.
