When my 2nd grader was diagnosed with Dyslexia I quickly became overwhelmed trying to understand how to best help my daughter. There are so many websites, services, programs, books... I wasn't quite sure where to start. I did some online research and came across The Chicago Home Tutor's website. I put a simple inquiry into Laura at Chicago Home Tutor and she called me within 5 minutes to discuss what I was looking for and how she could be of help. As it turned out, one of her tutors Megan, was certified in the Wilson Program (same dyslexia program used at our Elementary School) and lived only 10 minutes away from me in Elmhurst! We met with Megan a couple of weeks later and kicked it off from day one. We worked with Megan all Summer long to help give my daughter some time to "catch up" before starting 3rd grade. It also gave her some time, outside of the pressures of school, to gain more of an understanding for the basic fundamentals of the program. I feel like Megan did a great job of connecting with my daughter and was creative with different learning techniques that helped keep my daughter interested. We will be using Chicago Home Tutor every Summer now!! read more

Laura Reber IS the needle in the haystack. My husband found her on Yelp due to her glowing reviews and then had an equally wonderful experience with her on the phone, but I was skeptical as I hadn't talked to her myself. However, after reading her first email and her amazing handling of the intricacy of the decision to put a child into tutoring, I was never left wanting again. She makes you immediately feel comfortable that you are in great hands. She has a great sense of urgency and responds quickly to your concerns. The tutors she placed us with- Emma and Amy, have made learning fun and my daughter Lily has never again complained about doing homework. They make everything they do fun with games and prizes and it has changed the way my daughter views the whole experience of learning. We have my daughter in 5 days a week of reading tutoring in order to get her caught up and Laura's tutors make it well worth the investment. I highly recommend Chicago Home Tutor to anyone looking for a tutor for their child. I reached out to Chicago Home Tutor because my first grade daughter was struggling with reading. She was frustrated to the point that it was very difficult for us to work with her. I knew she would catch up but I was worried because her confidence was low and I didn't want it to impact her self esteem. We reached out to Laura and she found us the perfect tutor for my daughter. The tutor was extremely patient and slowly developed a strong rapport with my daughter. Soon my daughter was loving reading and couldn't wait for the days that her tutor came to our house. By the end of her first grade year she scored in the 90th percentile in reading on the NWEA test. Her teacher was amazed at the progress she made over the school year. My daughter loves her tutor so much that she wanted to keep working with her over the summer. read more

Kyla was fantastic. She exceeded all of our expectations with our daughter. She was patient, yet consistent and made her move forward with her learning even when she was not motivated. Our daughter never felt uncomfortable or pressured in a negative way. She helped her create notes to use in class and on assessments during school. Can't say enough wonderful things. This was our first time using a tutor and we needed to really find a special individual as our daughter can be challenging in that she does not speak up or advocate for herself much so the tutor needs to know the right questions to ask and help lead in the correct direction . Kyla was this special person and then some. We hit the tutor lottery with Kyla! I wish we could have her be her personal teacher for every high school class! Thank you. read more

Our children are thriving, have surpassed academic standards for their respective grades, and the school is very responsive and communicative with parents.

My older child has experienced repeated issues with other students that affected how safe, comfortable, and accepted he felt at school. Although we communicated our concerns and appreciated the attempts that were made to address them, the overall experience reached a point where my child no longer wanted to attend the school. I also became concerned about the level of care my 2-year-old was receiving. There were multiple times when she would come home with a dirty, runny nose that clearly had not been wiped or cleaned. I understand that toddlers get messy, but at two years old I expect basic care and attention to her hygiene throughout the school day. Another major concern was how distressed she became about going to school. Every morning, she would scream and cry for me not to leave her. At first, I tried to give her time to adjust because I understand that separation can be difficult for young children. But as the days continued and her distress remained so intense, it became harder for me to dismiss it as simply normal adjustment. The most disturbing concern came when my 2-year-old began telling me that her teacher, Mrs. Begley, had been pinching her on her bottom and yelling at her. My daughter is extremely articulate and bright for her age. She has a very strong vocabulary and memory, and people often assume she is older because of how clearly she communicates. She explained what she said was happening in a very specific way and even demonstrated to me how she said the pinching was being done. Hearing and seeing my child describe this was extremely alarming and upsetting. I take what my children tell me seriously, especially when it involves an adult responsible for their care. I cannot personally say what happened when I was not present, but I can say exactly what my daughter reported to me, how clearly she communicated it, and how distressed she had already been about being left at school each morning. I genuinely wanted Daystar to be a positive experience for my children, but within only three weeks we have already dealt with concerns involving my older child's emotional well-being, my toddler's basic care, her intense distress about attending school, and now an extremely serious report from my 2-year-old regarding her teacher. Every family may have a different experience, but based on what my children and I have experienced in such a short amount of time, I cannot recommend Daystar. My children's physical and emotional safety will always come first, and no parent should have to question whether their child feels safe, cared for, welcomed, and protected while they are at school.
