Chicago Comics was the first comic shop I thought was "cool" when I moved to Chicago 10 years ago. After a few visits I was really let down by the High Fidelity-esque staff that look down on you from behind their massive counter. Such a cool place. Sure, it looks hokey from the outside. It sort of looks like a macabre six flags gitf shop from an outside glance. My boyfriend likes coming here weekly to pick up his usual comics. I tag along and look at their book selection. They have awesome "bathroom books". By this, I mean books with short comics or animated illustrations with clever little quotes underneath them. There's a great selection of local publications too and a nice array of design books. They've got some pretty outrageous action figures here. I've heard they hand pick everything they get in and only accept the best. I guess if "the best" means a 12" Vampire Buffy action figure, then they've got the best! If you're making a trip to Chicago Comics, I highly recommend going to Orange across the street for brunch. I don't really like this place that much. They have a descent enough selection but they overcharge for most of their non-comic items. $5 or more over retail. If I am in Wrigleyville I will stop by, but I really won't go out of my way to go here. Oh and the counter where the employees are above you is a nice condescending touch (they can really look down on you from there). read more

I generally can't go past this place without going in to ogle all their new stuff. They have a great selection of Action Figures/Maquettes, random other toys, and of course a plethora of comics. It should be said, if you're on the hunt for lot's of back issues, Graham Crackers is probably a better choice. However, Chicago Comics is a store for the modern all-encompassing nerd culture. From time to time, they also hold special events and meetups to galvanize their future customers. I at one point attended a collective that gave wonderfully in-depth instruction about self-publishing, and usually the guys would hang around after and you could pick their brains about all kinds of other related trades, like screen printing and so on. There's even a special section for the grown ups where you can see animated women get sexually violated over and over again by the tentacles of fictitious aliens who only come to earth to impregnate animated Asian women at will. read more

Great selection but the girl behind the counter was unnecessarily rude. Rude enough to deter me from making the purchases I wanted. I'm sure she's not a representation of the whole staff but it's unfortunate her attitude lost the store my money. read more

This is one great comic book store. If you're into comics, be it old school Marvel comics, anime borderline softcore stuff, or new graphic novels by the likes of Jeffrey Brown, Adrian Tomine, or Craig Thompson, Chicago Comics has got you covered. They also have a fairly good zine collection here as well. Since they have a great selection of models and toys here, I'll bet your bottom dollar that they'll have the Veronica Mars action figures in stock if they ever get made. read more

I'm not really a comic book nerd, though my boyfriend is. Still, every time we come in here I feel like I could blow my entire paycheck in one sitting on all the good stuff they have here. I love the "girly swot"-type-comics and the zines and the cool books and alternative magazines and the weird little novelty items. This is one store that always genuinely makes me happy whether I buy anything or not. read more

ZOMG yes. There's not much to say here that has not been said. Staff is polite and not condescending as is too often the case. I could spend quite a bit of money so I only come in here maybe once a year. I also like how fantastically organized it is. It's nice to be able to find things on my own. Best comic book store I've ever been to. I'm not an avid comic book reader and I tend to get bored after a browse in most stores while waiting for my husband or a friend - not at Chicago Comics!! There is something from everyone. Books, toys, stationery, magazines, etc. I easily browsed for thirty minutes or more. Check out the indie comic and 'zine section. Lots of great work and really cheap (like under $4 cheap). I picked up several and plan to go back to get the Darth Vader and Son journal! The staff were really friendly as well. read more

Decent selection, though poorly organized. When I asked for Martian Manhunter merchandise, I was dismissively laughed at by the staff, though. My fault for asking about a super hero in Chicago's biggest comic shop I guess. So if you want anything other than Dr Who or Spider-Man be prepared for disappointment. Meh. read more

This store has so much to offer, but sadly in my experience, which is not based on hallucinogenic drugs or insanity, is not a pleasant place to shop. Constantly I have been given an indifferent welcome when I visit. Most recently, I was insulted by the offer of allowing me to return a $4.00 book and be given $0.10 store credit! For the record, I accidentally bought it because it had a different cover as one I already purchased from them. It is a shame that the manager, Raphael, does not care if he loses $4000 a year in comic sales because this is "their policy!" Very bad PR and customer service experience. Now, I'm not a comic book nerd (I'm a different type of nerd), but I love this place. I can always find plenty of awesome toys, local zines, art books (they have some cool H.R. Giger books and Royo books), quirky books that I haven't seen elsewhere, cool magazines, some interesting erotica books ::blush:: What I'm trying to say is you don't have to be super into comics to find something cool at this place. This is so much more than a comic book store, I love checking out the books and toys they have to offer. The people who work here are very friendly and will definitely accommodate special orders if you're looking for something that's not in the shop. On September 19th I proposed to my girlfriend in downtown Chicago, we plan on having a comic book themed wedding so we saw it fitting to go to Chicago comics. We wanted to get one quick picture and google says that you guys close at 8. We got there and were given nothing but attitude by a white male with glasses and a genial with a pride mask(I didn't catch there names) we took our mask off for less than a minute to take a quick picture and without hesitation the male employee with glasses demanded that we "get out right now". My brothers and me explained that I just proposed an hour earlier, to which to responded. "I doesn't matter". I love comics and have been to multiple comic shops around Chicago, I have never had a bad experience with comic shops. Until now, I was furious that such a special day was ruined by two comic shop employees. I like to go around to different comic shops with my friends, but I definitely won't be bringing anyone to this extremely rude shop. read more

The sister-store to Quimby's, Chicago Comics is a little bit more focused on 'traditional' comics and trades (super heros, manga, etc.), rather than zines and 'alternative' comics. Still, they have something for everyone and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Literally the greatest comic store I've ever been in, and I've been in the best comic stores in every major city. Perfectly brings together mainstream spandex comics, the underground non-superhero comics, the zine/mini-comix self-publishing world, the magazine world, the weird overpriced art book world, the porn/erotica world, and the weird toy/cool crap world without skimping on ANY of them. The only place I can go to pick up the latest Marvel, Fantagraphics, and Feral House publications while also snagging the latest "Cometbus" and "Burn Collector" issues before sneaking that $30 copy of "Gothic Lolita" into my stack. Oh Chicago Comics. They always have every recent issue of x-men when I come in. All my fravorite indie comics can be found here. I can find some of the coolest collection of toys and the people who work there are really helpful and seem to really like their job. I am sad I am going to be moving away from the store but Chicago Comics is worth a train and bus ride. read more

Chicago you have a unique little gem with this place! What an awesome find! You have comics, comics memorabilia, monsters, archer, posters, shirts , art books! really just over all i had a blast walking around this store. I ended up leaving with a Frankenstein action figure, edgar allen poe car freshner (smells like violets...), and some weird bandaids etc just a blast here. Deff. stop in you would be suprised and delighted by the merch. read more

This place is organized(for a comic shop) , they have a lot of different stuff (toys,comics,statues,t-shirts,novelties) , and it's in a trendy neighborhood. That is it's ultimate downfall , I'm sure the rent has to be a ton , and we the customers pay for it. All the back issues and non book inventory will cost you probably 10% more than online or a couple other area shops. It is fun to hang around here when I'm in the neighborhood , but unless I find something I haven't seen elsewhere , I'll usually buy elsewhere and spend less money. read more

Not everything with Chicago in the name is good. I was very excited to go to this store. In fact, it was one of the first places I went to when I moved to town. But I was not impressed. Granted it had all the ingredients to make a good comic pie, but it just didn't do it for me. The store clerks were a bit stand-offish (even for comic book guys). There was almost an intimidating feel to it. All that being said, comic book stores are like pizza. Even the bad ones are good. Especially with extra cheese. Thursday is new comic day. My boyfriend always wants to go to chicago comic on Thrusdays, and most of the time i go with, to check out the zines . Chicago Comics is Quimby's cousin ( in wicker park), they have a lot of the same books, and toys, expect that chicago comics has a SHIT LOAD of comics! ( not so many books). In high school, My friend and I used to go into comic book stores dressed really cute/ cool to sort of mental tease the comic book store guys. Neat little store with a wide and varied selection of geekery. I was really impressed with their book selections. Plus, they had toys and t-shirts. This wasn't the old school comic store that I visited as a kid. This is a place for collectors, readers and people who just enjoy some geeky stuff. read more

The employees are great too! This place is HUGE. And I must say, I like it a bit more than Quimby's. There is no way that Quimby's could match Chicago Comics in the comics department. I would call this place a straight up comic boutique. Because it has comics, oh Lordy does it ever, but that is only the tip of the iceberg my friends. They also have books, action figures, movies, mags, pins, patches, and much much more. My favorite section is in the back where they have the smaller press and self published comic books.
