An excellent comic book store that covers all your bases, from mainstream to indie. It's all there, and if not - go ask one of the guys behind the counter and they'll try to order it for ya! If you happen to be a comic artist entrepreneur, you can get your own comics in the store for people to see and hopefully add moolah to your pocket. No promises though, since 1) it's in the far back of the store, and 2) most of us are too cheap to buy and will rather just read it for free. *Cackle* It's never about the money right? Publicity publicity publicity. A nice addition to the store is also their massive selection of collectibles, ranging from your general action figures to your limited resin kits. It's all there, and most of the time, a lot of them are on sale. Or at the very least, they're not trying to rip you off. This is my most favoritest comic store EVARRR. Chicago Comics is located near the Belmont stop of the El and it packed wall to wall with all sorts of stories and art. Everyone can find something they enjoy. They carry collectible toys, novelty gifts, rare movies, unsusual books, magazines, independent zines, posters, and of course.... COMICS! Yes, they got your superhero, your children's, your small press, your manga, your pornography, your self-published, and pretty much everything under the rainbow. The only sad thing about the store is that it's so hard to get a job there. I can't stress enough how wonderful this shop is; you gotta see it yourself! why I've never had the thought to talk about these guys before is beyond me - not that you need my opinion amongst the sea of others already here - I'll give it to you anyway though only because you're doing yourself a serious disservice by not coming in here and seeing what they have in their independents section alone. I don't go near their toys or dvd's only because they mark them up to the fullest possible retail price point (understandable because they don't have the heavy discount buying power from Diamond that another less reputable chain in the Chicagoland area has - it's just, my wallet can't afford full price) but their back stock of comics is absolutely massive. Their indie comics section is where they really shine though, the only place you'll find a better selection in the city is sister store Quimby's. Really, I'm probably giving them atleast three of those stars up there because they put a copy on hold of the TMNT compendium that came out last Summer and quickly went out of print. I wasn't even a regular and they remembered to put one on hold and remind me that it came in when I ventured into the store one day. I love this place, which makes me sad because I live about fourteen million (yes that many) miles away from it. They're always really helpful but not pushy and I didn't feel like anyone was following me around checking to see if I'd stuffed shit into my purse. Of course I'm still waiting for the copy of Epileptic they said they would order for me that I never got the call about... if only they weren't fourteen million miles away from my house, I'd go investigate to see if it came in. I wanted to wait until I went to atleast one other comic book store before I made a review of this place. It's not perfect but it's pretty good. It's very large and inviting. Its more like a regular bookstore in many ways, and they do have some prose books here as well. This is a good place to bring those people who are scared of comic book stores. I've even seen women in here by themselves sometimes (GASP!) The comics aren't arranged how I like, with everything in one big section mostly. I tend to miss the more indie stuff I'm into when it's all jumbled in with all that superhero underwear pervert stuff (you know, like how superman flies around in his underoos). The staff is real friendly and talkative, but aren't pushy or anything. They'll help you find something if it's hidden on the shelves somewhere. Sometimes they pile a different title on top of an older on on the shelves because of lack of space. read more

I went today for about the 1000th time since I've lived in Chicago and have always had good experiences. I am more for collectibles than books, and they have a very interesting selection. One thing I will say is that they seemed to be horrendously overpriced; perhaps they make most of their money on comics. EG, Mighy Muggs: Target -- $10 Amazon -- $8-15 Chicago Comics - ~$17, each. Even UrbanOutfitters sells them for less! Chicago Comics is a great place to go, get ideas for things you'd like to buy, then promptly leave and find those things online and order them. I did that with Star Wars Mimobots ($35 here, $22 online). read more

This is exactly the kind of comic shop you want to find. It's friendly and welcoming to all customers. You can even bring your dog inside with you! The layout of the store makes good sense, with the new and recent releases all up front and clearly marked. These guys keep the good stuff in stock, so you won't have to go look somewhere else for trades and graphic novels like Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and so on. They'll have it in stock. What makes Chicago Comics even better is that they're a lot like Quimby's once you get to the back of the shop. They have a really amazing selection of indie comix, mini-comics, zines, and all that. I've found some really unique and outrageous little gems back there. If you're a local artist with comics to sell, they'll put it on their shelf and give you a cut. Graham Crackers has a shop not too far away, but Chicago Comics is superior in every way. This is the one. You'll want to set up your pull list here. read more

They're not like some comic shops where it's awkward to be in there or you feel like you're in someone's basement. I really like visual appeal, professional look and overall selection that they have to offer here at Chicago Comics... but please... let's face it... the staff are a gaggle of Elitist Uber-Geeks who think their sitting high on the pedestals above the 'worm-like' other geeks. They're predictably smarmy and flirtatious with any and all women that set foot in the store as well. In fact, one time I caught one of the guys who works there (who knew I was dating this woman at the time)... touching and complimenting my girlfriend in an overtly sexually-laden sort of way -- all while I was browsing the latest books 15 feet away. I do have to admit however that they have one of the best selections of comics, toys, graphic novels, books and other geek-dom trinkets & accessories known to the nerd-world. Stop thinking I am being condescending too by over-utilizing the words "Geek" and "Nerd" -- I too am in the nerd/geek/dork arena. Definitely a cool place, I feel like I can spend hours in there just looking. The people who work there are super friendly and very knowledgeable. The comic selection is ridiculous, there are so many new and old comics that you should be able to find whatever you are looking for. I only go in there once in a while but asked a question about recent DC storylines and they were really cool. I am not a regular at all. So don't think they are only cool with regulars, they are great with everyone. Also have statues, figures, t-shirts, dvd, posters and anything else you can think of. I love this place. read more

By far the sweetest zines and small press books are here! I think I spend more time in the back of the store where all these goodies are than I do the rest of the place. And these are all pretty inexpensive, considering. Some of the places I've been to charge an arm and a leg for small press and indie stuff. Granted, I understand the economics behind it, but that's no excuse. CC does it right! It's an absolute must for comic fans. I remember you! Chicago Comics is the store that used to be more south on Clark Street, like near that carpet store and Century Mall before it became an arthouse theatre mall. I've been going to Chicago Comics for years; my first time was in 1992 when Rich, Kurt and Max used to work there. The selection is still awesome, the staff is still super super helpful, and I think the "new" location is better suited. Love you guys! Chicago Comics has been a favorite hang out of mine for years! Occasionally they have signings/special events (I met Jhonen Vasquez here a while back) but it's a large enough, clean and organized, which makes browsing through the comics, action figures and more something that ends up taking me hours! I love their wide selection of local zines, they even have a decent selection of "misc oddball" stuff like bacon air fresheners, whizzing gnomes, and mint flavored tennis balls. O.o read more

Chicago Comics is the reason I am thankful for living in this city. On a recent trip to NYC, I learned that if you want a good selection of comics with some more odd ball stuff you have to go to one store. If you want odd ball stuff with some comics and a few zines, you have to go to another. Holy crap will I be excited to stop in at Chicago comics and pick up all my stuff in one stop this weekend! Love this place. Huge selection as far as current issues and most trades go, but they don't necessarily have the best stock of back issues. The organization for that is also a bit confusing. Nonetheless, I've been coming here since I was like 15 or 16 and I progressed from interest in manga to just comics now that I'm older. This review has been a long time coming, I just had to get off my lazy keester and make it happen. I'm living in LA but was visiting Grand Rapids/Chicago on vacation and found Chicago Comics kind of at the last minute when looking for book shops in the area. Being from the west coast, we have some really nice comic shops here (I'm talking about you Comics Factory in Pasadena!) so I'm a bit jaded, unfortunately, and hard to impress. That being said, I immediately fell in love with this shop and its super diverse assortment of comics, books, zines, toys and other geek goodies. The person who rung me up was very cool and knowledgable and she made the visit a very chill experience. The next time I'm in Chicago I'll definitely be making it a priority to stop there. read more

Horrible costumer service. The employees treated me as if they could care less if i buy anything. I walked in and asked and asked where they had their back issues. I was looking for silver age comics. The employee pointed me to shelved boxes but said that they were covered so I cannot look at them. He then walked away and said nothing else. After Windy City Comics shut down for good I was left with few options, comic book guy at Variety was cold and unpleasant but has a good selection (at decent prices) of back issues and well Graham Crackers was just there. So I found a home and solace in the warm embrace(s) of Hatuey, Dave, Eric, Eric and that other guy...I can't remember his name...sorry? It's been a while since I've been there and had to sadly close out my pull box because collecting became disgustingly expensive (I was ringing up more than $40 a week) and I had become a father. But they always had great deals on TPBs and back issues and they have their infamous .25 box!!!!! Eric and the gang would always help me out if I needed an issue (Dave actually gave me his copy, to buy, of Amazing 500) You also get the luxury of getting cool collectibles like a Jill Thompson "Chicago Comics" designed beer glass thingy mabob!!!! They are what a comic store should be for a collector.Always offering the newest books and variants as well as toys,tshirts,and a constantly changing array of back issues to choose from. I left this establishment feeling embarrassed and humiliated. Here's why. I walked in today, and was asked to check my backpack. There is a man standing to the side of the register far from the door. He has a bunch of stuff in his hands and is wearing a backpack. I'm annoyed because A. The rules should be the same for everyone, and B. I'd like to quickly grab a copy of Saga, buy it, and hurry home so that I can be online in time for a meeting (I'm an engineer who works remotely). Having to check my bag is an inconvenience; one that another customer did not have. I grab my copy of Saga and get in line behind the man who is wearing a backpack. I ask "Why did I have to check my bag, but he didn't?" The guy at the register looks annoyed, raises his voice, and gives the following reasons, in a tone appropriate for addressing a child, not a paying customer in her mid 30's: 1. He comes in there all the time. 2. He's buying something. 3. He's not wondering around the store. 4. He's a subscriber. He proceeds to say, very loudly that this isn't discrimination. That I'm not being discriminated against. He says this several times. The people in front of me at the register look at me awkwardly, the other person at the register looks at me awkwardly. Great. Now I'm the discrimination chick. Heck, if anyone else was in the store (I'm too embarrassed to even speak at this point, so there's no way I'm going to look at other humans if it can be avoided), they would not have heard what I said. But could hear him loud and clear. It seems like I'm making a scene or "playing the race card", when all I did was ask a valid question. I can't explain to you how embarrassing it is as a person of color to ask a simple question, and have "this isn't discrimination" be part of the answer. I was never thinking about discrimination, I was thinking of getting to my meeting on time. I mutter something about going in there all the time too, and he repeats the things he said before, continuing to harp on the fact that "this isn't discrimination". Here's the thing. 1. I go in there all the time too. 2. Why would you assume that I wasn't buying something? I'm literally standing in line to buy something. 3. I had no intentions of wondering the store, as I has a meeting to attend. 4. Why are you assuring me that I'm not being discriminated against? Why is that your assumption that I think I am? I at no point in time said anything about being discriminated against. To be told that I'm not being discriminated against, to be talked down to in front of several other people... It's embarrassing, humiliating, disrespectful, and uncalled for. The next time I come in to grab my copy of Saga, B. Planet, The Wicked + The Divine, Monstress, or any of the other titles I like, I expect an apology. I'm giving the store 2 stars because the women at the register apologized for him. read more

Chicago Comics is a great comic book shop. They always have a great selection of comics. And when most places are sold out of a comic they will still sometimes have it in, which is great. They have a great selection of action figures. They have their TPB sort of hidden, or I'm just blind. But if you ask some one who works there for help they'll gladly help you out. read more

Its not often i let my nerd flag fly but this place would be its home. ive been an x-men and spiderman freak since i was a little tiny mike k., and its here i can catch up with almost every marvel character ever printed in comics. they are big on the comic novels, which i love. they also have toys, dolls, action figures, buttons, little fun gifts and things that the average geek would love and appreciate. those funny or super cool t-shirts you occassionally see and wonder "where can i get that?" you get that here. it here that i picked up my first dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince poster....hell yeah! read more

The selection is there, and yet..... The staff would rather talk to each other than greet you. The lighting is decent, but all that black makes you feel like you're in a dank cellar. I asked about a comic that was out of stock. The clerk said they would order it for me and took my name & number -- and I never heard back from them. Even if the comic is no longer available, would it hurt to call and tell me that? IF I'm in the area, I'll stop in but it isn't worth a trip otherwise.
