I'm giving two stars because I am sure they are right for someone. I've been by this place many times and had to stop in to check it out. There is a Draped Bust Dollar image on the glass door when you go in. That tiny lobby in the photo is it. There were ASE's and silver bars in sight. Took a minute for someone to ask questions to. Asked if they have a showroom. No. Asked if they go to CSNS. No. Seems like a clearing house. Might be a good place for stackers to sell to, but not a place for collectors. They should take the Draped Bust off the door because you might be able to sell one there but you won't be buying one there. read more

I had a 10k gold pendant with small diamonds 4.8g, a 10k gold bracelet 4g and a small 10k gold necklace about 2.8g in which the guy tried to offer me $180 for. I paid about $1,200 for those pieces. He really tried hard for me to sell them to him for just $180 bucks max. I took just the pendant and the bracelet to a local pawn shop and got $450 for just the bracelet and the pendant! Do not try to sell you valuables to this place he will try to convince and force you to sell them talking about "just get it off your hands and be done with it". Chicago Coin is one of the more professional, no-nonsense precious metals dealers in the Chicago area. No drama, no shtick. In fact, if you have large amounts of gold/silver (over $10k), this is really the only retail establishment that can offer decent spreads (20 cents under spot for some silver) without lengthy discussions. If you are numismatic enthusiast, this is NOT the place to go. Management does allow retail walk-in traffic to enter the showroom. Security is very high as it should be. My one concern about Chicago Coin is that the immediate area may not be the best if you have large amount of precious metals or currency in your possession. I have never observed one police vehicle in the area. The store is really, really secure but that stretch of Archer looks pretty exposed. read more

Glen was very helpful with our inherited coin collection. We knew the value of most of the coins and he offered a fair price for them. We had been worried about being taken, but Glen gave the values right on where we knew they were. He was VERY THOROUGH and explained all the values as well. We sold him 3/4 of the collection and kept the rest because the rest were more sentimental to us than valuable monetarily. First, let me be clear if you're looking to buy or sell gold or silver this place is more like 3 or 4 stars as far as I can tell. They sold me some silver at just a little above its going price and that's great! But as for a place you'd have appraise your coins? No way! I went in there with a collection of ancient coins, greek, roman, etc. One with alexander's face on it. Alexander the friggin' great! And the guy said they were basically worthless and offered me the value of the silver it them. I'm okay with a pawn shop guy screwing me, but a guy who claims to be an appraiser? If he'd said "these are worth maybe a few hundred bucks, but I can only offer you $x" I woulda been less harsh in this review. But he out and out tried to screw me. Again, good source of silver, but I wouldn't trust them with a penny I found on the sidewalk. ya know, the more I think about it, I suspect he thought I stole them and figured I didn't know better and would take the $18. I won't say that was the case, because there are libel laws, but it sure is suspicious. read more

For prices to purchase, this would be 5 stars. As of my latest purchase, they charge $1 over spot. I contacted over 5 other dealers in the area who charge $2 or $3 over. When making a larger purchase, that can save you a lot. I called ahead to see if they had what I was looking for and they were able to look and verify pricing and quantity very quickly and professionally. I purchased a decent amount of silver 1 oz rounds. They were in great condition and I am very happy with the purchases. They are not the friendliest people here. I was not quite sure what to expect being that I am very new to collecting and investing in coins, but when I walked in it reminded me of a pawn shop. Not fancy at all, but I really didn't mind that. They had everything I asked for and quick service. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes with my purchase. Only thing I am confused on...not sure if they made a mistake the last 2 times I was there or if they just have really great prices...but both times they sold me some Silver Eagle coins and I verified that the particular year I was looking for was worth $65-$75 each prior to going to the shop. They only charged me $40 each. I asked both times to verify the price and they seemed distracted and wanting me to leave, so I bought several and left and made a quick profit on that investment. I came all the way across town to view some silvers to stack, and when I got in, I was quickly disappointed. They told me, in an uncomfortable fashion, that they wouldn't allow me to come in to the showcase to take a look at their items. That I would have to be handled at the register in the front room; however, their was a man in the showcase being shown, enthusiastically, all the goods they had to offer. The man was Caucasian, and I am an African American man. I only hope that that wasn't the issue, but it sure felt that way. read more

Well. I went to this place and it seemed more like a pawn shop with the glass that divides you from the staff. I get there and a nice lady said she would get someone to help me. This older guy with a mustache came up and just motioned for me to send my coins and some currency through the little slot. I slid the money to him and began to sift through it. I wasn't sure what he was doing with it, and it turns out he was dividing it my material value. Granted I didn't get involved in the process but when he got help to value the currency i should have really known that I was in trouble. They took the money and when I said that I wanted the currency back and some silver dollars that they wanted to give me 10% over face for. I felt like I was irritating the guy and apologized for making things difficult and he just said "yeah right." like my whole goal was to piss him off. If they didn't want to value my currency then they should not advertise that service. I would have paid for the appraisal but he didn't even ask. I am only offering this review based upon wholesale trade at coin shows, as I admit I have not been to the Chicago Coin Co. premises in person. I have had very pleasant and straight-forward interactions, both buying & selling. I like to deal with Bill at shows. When I need to "dump" gold from a deal that I just bought, he is a great resource. When I buy from him, he sells at fair prices where I can make some money. As a colleague, who also runs a coin shop out of state, I am concerned about misunderstandings and keeping customers happy. I noticed that the negative reviews mostly sounded like mere misunderstandings or miscommunications. In the current market, paying 100% of grey sheet bid for a VF30 small cent would be a mistake, as this is nearly current retail. Verbal offers made over the phone are always contingent upon inspection, and sometimes must be renegotiated if the coin is far below par, or retracted if the seller seems below board. There is a different sheet, called the "blue sheet" that is for sight-unseen offers. It could have been used safely in that situation, because it is MUCH lower. Adjusting an in-person offer by 10% from a sight-unseen estimate is ethical, and paying 90% of grey sheet for a VF30 cent is more than generous. Coin dealers do this sort of offer so frequently, that it is easy to forget to articulate all of the contingencies that are often just understood. It is disappointing to get a little less than anticipated for a coin, but rejecting a completely fair offer is on the seller. Also, many customers use the word "appraisal" interchangeably with "offer". It is sometimes a little difficult to tell which a customer really wants. Spending time evaluating low-value coins for a customer free of charge can be a source of frustration for coin dealers. There are many coins that the public refers to as "silver dollars" or "gold dollars" that are neither silver nor gold. If you can go to the bank and get it at face value, it doesn't contain any precious metal. If you are offered $1.10 each for "silver dollars" at Chicago Coin Co., then they aren't silver! I don't even buy those, because I can only get $1.18 each if I mail hundreds of them out to a wholesale buyer! read more

If you're looking for 100oz bars that contain 100oz of silver, this is probably not the place. My last two trips yielded 100oz Engelhard bars that, shall we say, lacked integrity.
