Defiantly, recommend events sponsored by this group. *I gave a 4 instead of 5 because, at the happy hour it was so busy, access to the bar was at a slower rate than we would have liked.

I had never performed in my life. In fact, I had terrible stage fright and social anxiety. On a…read morelark, I did a standup workshop and performance, it was a lot of fun. I was buzzing for days afterward, I wanted to learn more. I googled comedy classes and the American Comedy Institute popped up. I discovered the one year program and saw the cost, it was slightly out of my budget, but I applied and I got a small scholarship. I packed up and moved across the country. I stayed with family, which meant a 3 hour round trip just to get to classes 4 nights a week. I met incredible people, I had a lot of fun. But most of all, I learned a lot about comedy and myself, from learning how to be more comfortable in my body and working in an ensemble in improv class. To collaborating in sketch comedy class, to writing solid jokes and performing them in New York City, it was a great life experience for me. The director of the school, Stephen Rosenfield, has a knack for really helping me understand and develop comedically. The most important thing he taught me was to tend my own fire. The truth is there are better places that are all about getting you the necessary experience than ACI. 1. Does ACI have open mic affiliations? No, because they want you to stay at their bi-monthly gig at Broadway Comedy Club. They should be on top of all - yes, ALL - the open mics, clubs and producers. 2. You need to know the difference between 'practice makes perfect' and 'practice, practice, practice'!!!!! They're not encouraging their students to hit open mics or showcases, and for evidence I simply site the total absence of ACI students at shows I attend. 3. Their Broadway Comedy Club has both a cover AND a minimum. You can attend, meaning perform, at better clubs where there is no minimum but just a slightly ($20) cover. You ALWAYS spend more at Broadway, which has to be among NYC's worst clubs. Proof? Try The Stand on Third Ave, b/w 19-20. I've performed there. Not only are the comics better than ACI, The Stand has a full restaurant AND a full bar. Every club that I have ever seen offers videos of your gig for a nominal fee. Last I checked, ACI did the same but they MAILED YOU A GODDAMN DVD!!!! So, if you want to give standup a shot, do this: 1. Get a notebook. Small one. 2. Lookup 'BadSlava.com. This is a website listing EVERY SINGLE OPEN MIC in the city. 3. Go to an open mic. Your first FIVE assignments are to JUST GO and WATCH. Just WATCH. 80% watching. 10% listening. And 10% questioning. You're NOT PERFORMING. You're observing. Getting a feel. Eventually go to Laughing Buddha. Google them. They have close to 20 open mics a week. Just go and show support. I think it's $5 plus you buy a drink. Then you'll be 'ready' yourself. And in a MUCH better position to ask if you need to drop over $400 on a 'class' in comedy. As for another reviewer's claim that world famous comics return to write with Stephen, I only say, "Buyer, beware, and don't take everything you read at face value! The truth can be quite shocking." Trust me: I have been shocked.

Walking past the illustrious Studio 54 -- long-since closed -- we headed to 314 W. 54th Street to…read moresee one act plays at the American Theater of Actors. The historical significance of the building wasn't lost on me. The Renaissance Revival style building, completed in 1896, was designed by renowned architect John H. Duncan for the Seventh District Police Court. In addition to townhouses on the upper eastside, Duncan designed what's known as Grant's Tomb, as well as the spectacular Soldiers and Sailors Arch in Grand Army Plaza (America's version of the Arche de Triomphe.) Having seen the building's one-star reviews, I have to think that major issues -- ie antiquated electrical systems -- have been resolved. The bathrooms were clean and short of not knowing where to go when we arrived, we had no issues. There are stages on both the second and fourth floors. Informal set up, somewhat makeshift and a definite throwback to productions I used to find in the Village Voice (the print version sadly shuttered and gone.) Our production was in the fourth-floor theater. It was pretty much 'sit where you want', and small enough that even the worst seat in the house is good! Talented cast, thought-provoking and topical subjects -- an interesting and well-spent afternoon.

To customers considering seeing a performance here, please know this is, otherwise, a typical NYC off-Broadway utility theater space that is actually quite comfortable and ultimately offers a nice palette for a qualified crew to stage a decent production. Please don't hesitate to support companies putting on their events here as the issues below are not the fault of visiting productions. The management of this place is seriously apathetic about bad safety issues everywhere. Our production run in May 22 resulted in three crew members sustaining various levels of electrical shock from improperly maintained and deployed electrics systems (specifically, failing over-voltage stagepin under carpet making full-power contact with a metal catwalk surrounding the stage). It took our production from an ambitious start to running with a skeleton of our resources from equipment damage, crew injuries, and safety plan implementation just to get the job done - all without any recognition, help, or worry from the house. The owner of the space - who likes to act like his own assistant on the phone - will blame everyone but himself and then drag you to see an old poster from a production in the 70s and say "if it was good enough for Dennis Quaid it should be good enough for you". And that's the attitude here. There truly is a fundamental disconnect in how management here approaches real world issues - just because the space has had some successful productions over its history doesn't mean that allowing it to fall into disrepair and poor technical maintenance is fine. And to gaslight visiting crew about it isn't good, either. Also - the owner tries to advance production and becomes very protective over any gear in the space that comes with the rental. Despite nothing in the space being truly usable for a modern-day production, he will insist you try to use his equipment and then bully you about why you're bad at your job because it doesn't meet your needs. For example, when advancing audio, up until the load-out day at the theater he insisted his "24 channel digital board" was good enough and it was because I wasn't good at my job I couldn't use it. No, sir, an analog Behringer Eurorack with 20ish functioning channels and no outboard equipment isn't suitable for my musicals with over 30 inputs. And he insists something is "digital" if it accepts electricity which makes getting the truth out or what they have available hard to get until you see it yourself. Last I heard the horrifying power problems were dealt with by a qualified electrician, but knowing the issues were allowed to get to that point in the first place, and that our production was one of many that got screwed by this venue, I advise looking elsewhere until a new owner takes over. The bones are good.

They helped us plan a show that fit the vibe of the evening -- classy but still fun and engaging. The performers were fantastic -- the singers had incredible voices, the dancers were super polished, and the whole thing felt very high-end. If you have mobility problems you might want to call to see if the elevator reaches the top floor. We were told to go to 3, then walk up a flight.

This is happy hour and meeting people without pressure - exactly what the company is going for. Since I am the first to review, and I do love that, I'll give you all the low down. It's happy hours for professional singles looking to meet other professional singles. Simple as that. It was all about the execution. Event started promptly, and the Icebreaker of the night was - as they billed it - Adult Bingo, so things like - Have you been on a nude beach, Do you have a piercing, etc. And the first 5 winners got a prize. It was less about the Icebreaker - which don't get me wrong, was a great way to make your way through the room, but it was more the overall beginning to end of the event. They have what they call the HH Host (or something like that title), who is your master of ceremonies, and they have floaters during the event whose job is to talk to everyone, and make the connections between people in the room. Reminded me back in the day during Rush - oh wait - I think the PC term is Recruitment. This event stood out to me 1) cause it wasn't a random match event which sold out in two seconds, but the people attending have nothing in common, 2) the event organizers really took the time to make sure everyone was having a good time. At one point, they did have shots around the room - I think. Overall - it was fun, and I'd go back to an event.

They are violating protocols with cancel culture, and no specific provable accusations. Being "negative" when we are free to be any way and I don't know what that means and who if anyone complained, is BS. No apology for being contacted on a Sunday is the same. I am glad to be able to take lessons all over the world in environments not full of BS cancel culture like this one. Thanks for saving me from an environment not up to par to who I am and integrity, at least involving a few in power, since I cannot speak for everyone there and have had some great times there with many and various people. Thankfully, I saved money and watched a better show, the Country Musis Awards. Wonderful artists and amazing lyrics
