I went to Leila's salon for an impromptu blow-out after work this week. She had a $25 special, great price! I was a bit worried because I am generally hesistant about trying new hair stylists. This is because not everyone can do my hair; I am Puerto Rican and Dominican and have typical Caribbean curls and that day, it was particularly nappy and poofy! :) When I walked in, I was so, soo excited to find Eliany working there who is also Dominican! What joy!! It actually felt like I had hit the jackpot because Dominican hair stylists are the BEST. And in the DMV, Dominicans are rare!! She did my hair in about 30 min (wash and blow dry)- a pro stylist! She was very nice and funny and we never stopped talking throughout the whole time! I love those kinds of hair stylists! :) As I was leaving, I decided to do my eyebrows. I usually get them threaded (again because I am particular with who does them) but I went for the wax. Leila did them with much care and attentiveness. My eyebrows are amazing! When I walked out, I left as you always hope you leave when you go to a beauty salon- absolutely beautiful! ;) I am SO glad I decided to walk in to Leila's . I HIGHLY recommend this salon! Hanieh did an incredible job on my hair; I look younger and feel better! I had about 2 inches of grey and a lot of brassy tones in my hair. She fixed the overly red tones from another salon, and gave me a more natural rich dark brown. It has a lot of shine and depth now. I can't stop touching it. After spending the better part of a year trying to get my hair-cut fixed and suffering through failure after failure at other salons I found my salvation in Franceska at the Leila Salon! My first visit was actually a couple of months ago, I came in desperate for a trim to fix the latest in difficult cuts and Franceska not only fixed it, she made it GREAT! I went in yesterday to get more of a real cut, I've been letting it grow to get rid of these last few hellish layers making things difficult for me, and she did an amazing job! She listened to me, offered advice as well, but still did what I wanted! This is a very big deal. A VERY big deal. She also didn't cut my hair while it was dry. In fact, she said "if I cut while it is dry, many mistakes will be made!" I told her I loved her when she said that. One of the things other stylists who mess things up have been doing to me is cutting dry and trying to justify why that is the better way--which of course it obviously isn't seeing as how all those cuts were so crappy! I can't give any feedback on their coloring practices, but I will say (regarding another yelper's review) that Leila herself is back in action so if your goal is to have her do your color, you are in luck again! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because paying with a credit card was not an option (but we figured out something), they definitely need to get that set up. And also, I was COVERED in little hair clippings! They were on my pants, shoes, down my neck.... ugh. But it seems that no salons really watch the ol' clippings anymore, none of the places I have been keep them off you as well as they used to when I was younger.... read more

Went in last Saturday to have cut & color by Sarah whom I've had great results with in the past. I'll follow Sarah around wherever she goes since she always does a kick-ass job on my hair. I'm a guy with hair past my shoulders and I'm quite fickle about my hair and coloring. Once you find a hair ninja like Sarah, you stick with her. Made the huge mistake of impulsively walking into a Hair Cuttery in between visits with Sarah and came out highly disappointed. Never again will I make that mistake. Leila's is a quick hop, skip & jump from the Arlington Courthouse Metro if driving is not your thing. On Saturday, there is paid parking (2hr) out front, I opted to drive and easily found a spot right outside the entrance. Apparently parking enforcement is on their game out there so make sure you are aware of how many minutes you have left on the meter! Luckily one of the girls who worked there reminded me in time to save myself from getting a ticket! It's a smaller than most salons I've been in but I've seen smaller. I would use the word "boutique-esque" to describe it... much more personal attention than other places I've been. Was offered some various drinks (wine, coffee, water) on my arrival and chatted a bit with Leila prior to Sarahs arrival. Leila made me feel at home throughout the whole experience, she's super easy to talk to and pretty frickin' funny. She even hooked me up some eyebrow shaping (Thanks again Leila!!) which I honestly didn't think I needed. After the shaping, I realize just how wrong I was. *Note to self, don't doubt Leila ever again... As always Sarah did an amazing job on the cut and highlights she gave me. I adore this place. I initially went because Carla is simply awesome at color, cut and style. Period. However, I really liked Leila and the salon. 1) Location - Great location. Easy to get to. Parking right in front of salon. 2) Carla's color is nothing shy of part magic part miracle worker. Her cuts are fantastic and she literally is the first person that I let blow dry my hair that I LOVED and wanted to learn how to do it. 3) Leila may be brilliant at the color (I don't know I am faithful to Carla), but I will say she was awesome with the eyebrows. I visited Leila's salon twice and although the first visit went relatively well, my second visit was appalling. I made an appointment for 4pm, only to watch Leila spend all of her time cutting 2 gentlemen's hair that walked in off the street. Her brand new assistant, who was clearly not trained or experienced did my color and proceeded to torture me as she blew dry my hair because she clearly had no idea how to handle a brush or a hair dryer. I was then charged $95 for the service I received by a 19 year old assistant. Shocking and completely unacceptable. I will not be going back and I suggest you find an alternative. read more

I think this place really all depends on the day. First time I went in Leila gave me a great cut. Granted, it took a while as she is very talkative...in addition some "family drama" went down while I was there which included a visit by a sobbing friend of hers. She spent a few minutes outside talking to the woman...which I tried to bear with because it clearly wasn't welcomed but, err...things happen? Anyway, my haircut was really cute, so I went back. Things went downhill. I made an appointment...supposedly with Leila. Her assistant who actually cut my hair informed me that she wouldn't be working for 2 months...and had been off for that month--so umm, maybe she could have told me that over the phone!? Anyway, this haircut, notSOgood. She trimmed it...it was fine, I paid nearly $100. Ridiculously overpriced, plus a tip for the shampooer and stylist!? The service has to be superb for that. Also, they do NOT take credit card which the fail to mention and every customer I've seen ends up running across the street to the ATM. read more

I wasn't sure if I should write this because I'm not trying to ruin someone's business.. but I paid for something I didn't get... and I'm beyond frustrated. I've been following Leilas work for a few years and I finally decided to giver her a try. I scheduled an appointment and when I got there I was greeted by a lady that wasn't Leila(I didn't know it wasn't the person since it was my first time there) also! When I called the lady Leila, she responded to it. My concern is that this is extremely deceiving. I wanted my hair done by Leila and it was done by the soon to be owner Hanieh who is extremely distracted from her work. I asked for one color and got what she thought would suit me. I was extremely unhappy! I went back to correct it and she still got it wrong. I paid $400 for my hair and I'm still not happy with it. Hanieh complained about my hair being long and damaged on the bottom but I came to her for a cut and color. Again! I've seen leilas work on the website.. and I thought I was seeing Leila and not Hanieh. Long story short.. she apologized and said maybe it's best she doesn't take on "New Clients" anymore. I felt insulted! Because I was led to believe I was seeing Leila. If you're looking for a new hairdresser look elsewhere ... this hairdresser is overwhelmed and stressed out and doesn't listen to her clients. I've had to pay for someone else to fix her mistake. I felt like I was bothering her and left there feeling uncomfortable. Hanieh took a lot of Jabs at me and they were hurtful. I'm sorry my hair wasn't short and blonde! read more

I called at 4pm for a 6pm haircut appointment and they were able to fit me in. They asked me to arrive at 5:45pm but did not start on washing my hair until 6:30pm. Although they did offer me a glass of wine while I waited, I was a bit frustrated that I had to leave work early only to sit in a chair and wait for 45 minutes. The other reviews are spot-on about Leila's behavior (loud, distracted, over-sharing) and the atmosphere of the salon (very informal, asked me to stand-up as she cut my hair because it was long) but she did a good job with my haircut and that's all I really wanted. Considering the last-minute nature of my request, for $65 (haircut and blow-dry) it was an okay experience. Also, I gave her $100 bill and she asked if I wanted change...ummm, on a $65 bill? yes, please. Note: I believe she now takes credit cards (via that attachment to her smartphone) but I would call to double-check. read more

Leila runs a great salon! She has been coloring and cutting my hair, and doing my eyebrows, for several years now. My haircolor is always exactly what I want and goes well with my skin tone - winter or summer. With other hair stylists, my winter shade of blonde would sometimes take on a gray tint - and this has never happened with Leila. She also does a great job of shaping my eyebrows and my hairstyle to match my facial features. It was so nice to find her after several bad brow waxing experiences at other salons. I also like the vibe in her salon - it's very personal and relaxing - not a big, loud place where they scoot you through stations with different people. I have had my hair cut at Leila's five times now, and colored three times. Go see Leila and you'll soon have a friend who also has a great eye for hair and what color would look good on you. Leila rescued my hair when it had been colored too dark and cut in layers that were too long. I came back in three weeks just to say hello. Leila said that my hair needed to be cut again - and she was right. Leila is a perfectionist when it comes to hair - and meticulous about making sure the haircut and color is perfect. The shop is an easy walk from Courthouse metro. Leila's prices are quite reasonable. She won't push shampoo or conditioner. I have found that Leila and Lila (?) are quite nice and I think of them as friends who happen to help my hair look great. I stop and say hello when I walk by just because. Leila is AMAZING. She makes everyone look and feel like a million bucks. I am not very good at envisioning what would look best in terms of cut and color, so what I like best about Leila is that she has that vision and can explain several options that would look good. Not only do I look and feel great coming out of the salon, but for weeks afterwards I am still getting compliments. I've never really wanted my hair colored before, though the gray streak in it was freaking me out and making me feel very old. I went to Leila's originally for a Keratin treatment - which was amazing and had a cut at the same time. When I came back for a second keratin treatment, yes, I liked it that much - expensive, but worth it, when you are over 50 and your hair is also going through "the change" - Leila suggested at least "trying" some color. Well, best thing I ever did! She is a true artist with coloring. I agreed mostly because while I was waiting with the Keratin treatment, I watched her work some serious magic with color on other clients. They walked out with the most amazing, natural, beautiful hair. Leila colored my hair this past Saturday and it looks exactly as it did when I was a teenager - same color, same highlights, same shine. I feel really good and it looks so natural - really amazing! I called Leila this weekend to touch up my purple highlights and she was able to fit me in on a Saturday. I absolutely loved Leila's Color Salon. It's a small salon, with big service. Leila was amazing and did an amazing job on my hair. She gave me great advice to take home with me to Texas. Her clients that came in knew her on a personal level and she knew them. Leila is a horrible hair stylist. She was very rude and the salon was horribly dirty. While working on my hair she was yelling at other costumers and being very rude to them. She was rushing to finish my hair and did a horrible job at the end. I ended up going to bubbles to get clean up the mess she did to my hair. I do NOT recommend this place at all. One of the worst salon experiences ever. The place is tiny tiny tiny and not clean. I was the first customer of the day, and there was hair in the floor. The plastic drape they put on me to protect my clothes was filthy. Looked like it had been used on the floor as a drop cloth. And they re-use their gloves - she was so so careful to rinse the dye off the gloves and then remove them. GROSS She also didn't have the color I wanted and tried to talk me into doing something completely opposite of what I wanted - because that's what she had on the shelf. Finally convinced her to mix something that would get us close to what I wanted. It was a hot mess from there on out. No neat sections of hair being carefully covered in the coloring mixture. She just glopped it on my head and mixed it up with her fingers. My hair was one huge rats nest - and then she makes a comment about ONE HAIR falling out (apparently I need vitamins...yeah, I'll wait to hear that from an actual MD, thanks). Um, you're lucky more didn't come out with your "technique." Completely ignored me when I told her what I wanted for the cut. It doesn't look bad, but it was like she was afraid to chop off as much hair as I wanted to. Don't even get me started about the mess when she was drying my hair. End result is fine - I wanted a more dramatic change than I got. And getting that was an uphill battle all the way. Oh, and I can't believe no one has mentioned this in the other reviews - this is a CASH ONLY place. I don't know what century they're living in...but I don't carry that much cash around with me. So I had to run down the street to an ATM and come back to pay. Insult to injury, as they say. read more

I would have given this 4 stars except for the way in which the salon takes payment. It takes neither credit cards nor checks, and they DON'T tell you this before they start work on your hair. I was counting out pennies trying to get enough cash out of my purse to pay my bill. They need to either have a more liberal payment policy or tell customers when they make an appointment or do a walk-in that they're going to need a lot of cash to pay their bill. read more

Ok - first off - I heart Leila. She has colored my hair BEAUTIFULLY and isn't bad at cuts either. Her skill #1 is as a colorist. The reason I am giving the salon 2 stars is because Leila has been on medical leave for probably over a year now and another stylist seems to be doing everything. That other stylist, does not have Leila's experience/talent with color and definitely has a different approach to cuts. I feel bad saying this, but she really doesn't cut any better than a corporate "McSalon" or something. If you are in early 50s and want your hair to look like her hair, no problem. Otherwise, good luck explaining what you want. So - until Leila is back...this is not "Leila Color Salon." read more

My first haircut was really good. But after that they were really bad. I kept wanting to give her another chance because she is a nice person. But, I am not going back. The last time I got my haircut it was the worst one I have ever had. I have been to Leila's twice now, and every time I go there I leave with an absolutely fabulous haircut. This salon has been a wonderful atmosphere for talk and gossip while being well-taken care of! While you should probably expect a longer time in the chair than is typical for a salon on account of random friendly walk-in's, I can assure you the price is well worth it. read more

I had a similar experience to a few other reviewers. A great cut and color on the first visit and a sub-par cut on the second visit. The prices are high for the overall experience - small salon, unprofessional behavior, and bare minimum attention, BUT I was happy with the quality of the color services, which can be hard to find. It's sad because Leila is talented and the business could be quite successful with her at the helm if she could manage to tone down her antics. Unfortunately, it seems like overcharging the few clients they can wrangle for a couple of visits is their MO. I'm still looking for a good neighborhood salon, but won't be going back to Leila's. read more
