Montreux Jazz Café - Oysters, a splurge for sure

We were staying at the hotel and after a long day (excursion to the Matterhorn) planned an easy…read moredinner at the Jazz cafe. We had a huge booth located by the window and a series of waiters taking our selections, We skipped the appetizers but all got a small side salad from the "sides" category to accompany our mains. Two of us got the Quincy Jones's chicken (a whole chicken but very small-like a Cornish game hen sized -quartered, slow roasted then grilled with a nice sauce-excellent) which came with thin crispy chips and roasted garlic while two split the whole sole meunière (that was deboned and plated)-plenty for two and it came with creamy mashed potatoes. We enjoyed the food and leisurely pace of the meal. Fresh bread was also provided with butter. There's a huge wine list with a wide range of prices. We enjoyed the evening,

I ordered the BB burger which is a brioche bun, beef patty, aged cheddar, & Montreux Jazz Café sauce with French fries. The bun was toasted with sesame seeds & the patty was juicy. The Apricot Sorbet & Pavlova Fraise et Framboise were a great light, finish to the meal. The apricot sorbet was refreshing with great flavor and came with a rolled wafer cookie. The Pavlova Fraise et Framboise was light & full of raspberry and strawberry flavor.

Café le Bonnet Rouge - Meringues with double cream, amazing!

Thanks to the first review of this business, we made our first discovery of double cream (let it be…read moreknown that we then had double cream 7 times in three days- wow, I know). Cafe le Bonnet Rouge is ideal for a quick lunch given that the seating isn't the most comfortable hanging over an edge on the sidewalk. A few takeaways from our visit: the best salad in town - topped with alfalfa greens- we literally had a salad at almost all of the Gruyeres restaurants ha! Something has to balance out all of that cheese consumption. The double cream here is thicker than the others we experienced and was topped with beautiful fresh raspberries. My husband enjoyed his simple hand sandwich in baguette with small pickles and mustard. Note that they are not open in the morning hours. Located two doors down from the Gruyeres tourism office.

in the mornings and evenings, Gruyères is a quiet old town nestled between beautiful mountains…read more It's a peaceful place to sit down and have most delicious breakfast before you go on exploring... We had a long day ahead of us, so proper breakfast is always good idea - especially when "proper" here means you also get glass of wine or beer - yes, with your breakfast. Coffee? Nonsense. Order glass of wine. Since Gruyères is close to border with France, and French is spoken here more than any other languages, food is influenced by French as well. So we have to order crêpes - of course! (I mean, I cannot resist good crêpe, ever) The crêpe itself is crispy on edges, soft towards center, filled with most delicious creamy swiss chocolate, topped with chocolate shavings - oh, so, sooooo good. But real star of the show was double cream - local specialty I have no seen anywhere else on my travels. This luxurious, not-too-sweet, rich, buttery, silky, creamy & dreamy treat that is out of this world - and probably best thing you ever tasted. Topped with berries, it is beautiful to look at as well, shiny peaks of goodness. You gotta try this one - no excuses!
