I'm not sure if this is just Montreal style poutine, but the fries here are not crispy at all. As you can see from the pictures, the fries are very dark brown in color and they also have a fryer-oil taste to them. The gravy is a rich dark gravy which I found quite good and not overly salty and the cheese curds were nice and fresh. However, my personal preference is to have crispy fries fried in clean oil, and this is not it. The poutine comes in 3 sizes. I ordered the petite or middle size one, which was a good amount of food for two people. The interior has a very old school feel. There's seating for maybe about 15 - 25 people. Chez Claudette wins best cheese curds in our battle of Quebec poutines but outside of our squeaky buddies, the experience was just okay in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with service. We walked in at mid afternoon and ordered a classic poutine to-go since parking is nothing short of a nightmare in the area. The fries were stacked high and the gravy was poured in piping hot before being closed up. But on first bite after opening, what I didn't expect was notes of sweet? Tasted the gravy, nope. Super delicious, with massive flavor, excellent coverage of gravy, great potato layer, and the cheese curd squeak just cuts through like a humid day in Louisiana. If you are a tourist in Montreal, there is a good chance you are experimenting with Poutine. Chez Claudette shows up on almost every "Top Poutine Spots in MTL" list, and I get why. Although I was not super impressed, I want to point out a few things so you know what to expect. Chez Claudette is located in a quiet neighborhood in the city and feels like the local greasy spoon. Food wise, although not my favourite poutine, it feels like the poutine you crave when you are drunk. The fries were on the softer side, with nice and chewey curds. I wanted to be a little "healthy"(lol) and get the veg option, which was good... but for a 1pm lunch... felt quite salty and excessive. It's definitely on the saltier and heavier side of the poutine spectrum (in my opinion). Should you go? Absolutely! I've got to say, we absolutely loved the gravy and the cheese curds in this poutine. We ordered the Elvis and the Smoked meat poutine for a party of two and almost finished everything despite the relatively large portion sizes. We preferred the Elvis as we found the smoked meat to be a little salty. The Elvis also comes with veggies which add more flavor and help cut through the heavy meal. This place can get pretty busy with take out orders so if you're sitting in, you'll have to be patient about service. My friend and I ordered a classic poutine and the curds were noticeably funkier (definitely a plus for my inner-cheese-lover) which was complemented by a sweeter potato. Banquise had a huge line so we went to Chez Claudette. This is a no frills casse-croûte that serves delicious poutine and all the regular fast food items that you can think of. I really.loved their poutine because their fries were crunchy, gravy was thick and well spiced and it had a good serving of fresh cheese curds. They have a pretty extensive list of poutines so we chose 5 and shared. My favourite was the smoked meat poutine. The flavors of the gravy and smoked meat went really well together and I find it represents Montreal pretty well too. A close second was the "trois S"- Three types of Italian sausages. The poutines here are the bomb! I think this spot has one of the best poutines you can get in Montreal, it's in my top 5! There is something about their fries that tastes almost kind of sweet in every poutine, but not overly powerful. It's unlike many other poutineries in my opinion. It's a small spot though and I wouldn't recommend a big group. But you can swing in and order to go, they're very fast. The prices are also excellent for a big poutine as good as this in my opinion. The menu is pretty large, they have many different poutines. My favorite is the New York poutine which comes with onions, mushrooms, and ground beef. Their smoked beef poutine is also great. They also serve other things like burgers and pogos, the pogo I had was pretty good! The service has also been very nice every time I've gone. The only downside is that it can get a little crowded in the evening, but the upside is that this is one of the only spots around this area that stays open pretty late! Hands down the tastiest poutine and all-dressed steamie in the city. I love it. POUTINE Finally, a poutine with fresh tasting fries that are not dry and a gravy that is not only gentle on salt but quite tasty as well. I like mushy fries with minimal crisp with a melting potato sweet and fresh oil taste - Claudette's fries are a perfect reference! The gravy really stood out with a blend of garlic and peppery flavours with a controlled salt level so you can taste everything else. I ordered an American poutine which added sautéd mushroom, bell peppers, and "New York" steak. I really liked the sautéd mushroom which added a nice texture and a bit of stir-fry burnt to the poutine. The steak didn't add much value but it was big and not saltier than the other stuff so blended in well. Overall, being easy on the salt AND showcasing great flavours is an achievement. You might be suspicious at first of the endless choice of poutines à la Banquise, but what I took today proved that fancier can be done right. STEAMIE (hot dog) The all-dressed steamie at Claudette proved that you could improve such a basic thing as a hot dog by adding more relish than mustard and mince-chopped garlic coleslaw instead of the more thick-cut intertwined choux (Green Spot style). The result is a surprisingly tasty dish that doesn't saturate your taste buds with pure mustard and that is easy to eat - it's the least messy hot dog I've eaten. I used to be settled on the "traditional" Montreal all-dressed steamie, i.e. only mustard, chopped onion (large cubed) and choux. Having toured big names like Décarie Hot Dog, Green Spot, R Lafleur, La Belle Province, and Alfa, some of which deviate from the traditional style, proved that different wasn't better than traditional so I vouched for the latter. The all-dressed steamie at Chez Claudette though is a large enough improvement that I think is innovative and worthy of parting from traditions. I LOVE IT BECAUSE None come close in terms of taste. Tbh I never expected a steamie-the most basic of commodities-could be much different from what I was used to, and didn't expect that a dressed-up poutine can be humble enough to be more than a random pilling up of ingredients. I think it's hard to judge a place solely off its poutine. For me, the poutine has the meaty beef flavour with the herb notes, the crispy fries and the squeaky cheese. Individually, all the components are there. Somehow, it doesn't quite all come together in as harmonious dish. I think that Chez Claudette is fine but by far from my favorite joint for late night poutine. I would say it is a good option late without a long wait.
