My daughter was bullied in school until she finally got to Cocopah (however you spell it). I was told by the office I could walk my kids to class on the first day because he didn't know where to go. The teachers didn't like that, and were really rude saying "You're not supposed to be in here". Calm down, it's the first day of school. I'm a 4th grade teacher. My family has been involved in many school. This one has been the worst for a new kid.

The specials teachers are all wonderful and truly add to the positive environment. Now our son is in Mrs. Bethke's kindergarten class, and we honestly wish he could stay there forever! She has made such a meaningful impact on his learning and has helped us feel so confident and encouraged about his progress. Laguna Elementary consistently hosts great events throughout the year, and the principal is incredibly kind and welcoming. We feel very lucky to be part of such an amazing school community and highly recommend it!

We brought these concerns to the school administration. We were deeply disappointed by how the situation was handled. Shawn Bell did not take action in a way we felt protected our daughter or addressed similar concerns raised by other students. To our knowledge, the teacher remained employed at the time we withdrew our children. Because of this experience and the school's response, our family chose not to continue enrollment.

The Gettysburg and White House Dinner reenactment were fabulous! It's the 8th grade program that left a bitter taste in my mouth. Maybe it's the fact that Mrs. Kendrick the school principal retired and the school's feel changed. But I don't feel my son had any growth during the second year. I knew once Mr. Shappee left that there was no way my other son would go here. I saw major bullying at this school as well, among other issues. My son enjoyed seventh grade here, went to Costa Rica for 10 days which he will cherish forever but I really feel that PVUSD just isn't what it could be or has been in years past. Sad really.

Also, I've noticed some of the staff seemed to not care that much due to how much students they have. When I was here, only one staff member actually checked up on me and my friend (nope not the counselor) I remember I was doing very bad in math and not the best grade in ELA, both of the teachers were late to the student conference (and left early) that I had scheduled a week before, rude much. Also, they have a very interesting mindset, especially counselors, they would constantly guilt trip and gaslight me and my parents into constantly putting me in honors (which was definitely not a good idea) just add one more thing. This school is HUGE along with Chaperel, which it feeds into. So I don't entirely blame the teachers for being overwhelmed. But yet again, this is the job they signed up for, and they must have proper work etiquette. There is also a problem in eighth grade with pressuring into vaping and teen s*x which is not managed as much as it should. A lot of the kids there are a very bad influence. (and I'm not trying to be a saint, it's genuinely bad.) they should also be a bit stricter on the dress code, I mean, you can wear practically anything, and a lot of people bullied because they don't have a certain (expensive) clothing item. I know this is long, but it's very important and I could add a lot more. My family certainly got fed up with it and we switched in the eighth grade. I would overall not recommend this school sorry if this offended anyone. Teachers who literally hate kids and treat them like crap are teaching here. Lazy and never update grades in their "awesome" app and when asked why they aren't up to date, blame the kids. Constant emails that go unanswered. Teachers giving excessive homework with unrealistic due dates (some with so much work that has to be "done only in class") and give no time in class to do it so kids have to give up their lunch and after school to complete it. Kids in tears because it's too much and teachers expectations are absurd THEN don't put the grades in the grade book because they "can complete it on their own schedule" causing kids to stress out and are upset their grades look like failing grades. SUSD has dropped the ball here and I will tell everyone every chance I can what a sh*tty school this is.

I know it takes a great office staff to make a school great, and this office staff is unhelpful, unfriendly, unable to think outside the box, or work around issues to solve problems. The burden is consistently on the parent and they have done nothing to make our transition an easy or pleasant one. This is my third interaction in the office for various, yet very simple reasons, and once again, I am left dissatisfied as a parent of children in this highly respected school.

But, the Promise School was not only an answer for a safe, in-person education---we continue to be stunned by the amazing education our son is receiving. In September, we enrolled our 7 year-old in second grade. He was not only struggling with reading, writing and math, his confidence was really low. But, in just three months, his teachers have transformed him into a kid who is fully confident in his abilities and loves his school and learning. To us, that says a lot about both the environment the team has created and this new model of learning. Before enrolling, my wife and I did quite a bit of due diligence, and it quickly became clear that Alpha's approach aligned extremely well with what we wanted for our two kids. One of the things we love most is the emphasis on efficient, individualized academic learning. The core academics are concentrated into roughly two hours in the morning, which opens up the rest of the day for developing real-world life skills like public speaking, entrepreneurship, leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving. Spending less time on academics does not mean academics are less rigorous - in many ways, we've found the opposite to be true. Because the learning is individualized, students have the opportunity to identify and fill gaps rather than simply moving forward with the rest of a class. At the same time, they can accelerate in subjects where they are ready, often working well beyond what would traditionally be expected for their grade level. A big change is our kids' attitude towards school. They leave the house energized and excited, and they often come home just as energized. The guides and staff at Alpha Scottsdale have also been fantastic (understatement). They work incredibly hard to create a positive, encouraging environment while still challenging the kids to grow. There is a very intentional culture around helping kids develop confidence, independence, and the belief that they are capable of accomplishing anything they put their minds to. Ultimately, Alpha Scottsdale has been a great fit for our family and is delivering on exactly what we hoped to find in a school. My wife and I have said more than once that we only wish something like Alpha had existed when we were kids.
