In reading many of the other reviews, it's hard to believe how far and wide the Chicken-On-A-Stick schtick has traveled. I myself first learned of the legendary meal while commuting back and forth between Denver, Colorado and Oxford, MS for work. I was a little skeptical of what is basically an oversized chicken kebab w/o any veggies, but it's not half bad. I think it's probably best consumed while drunk, but for those of us who abstain from alcohol, it really wasn't too bad sober either! Cheap eats and convenient to just about everything. I first became infatuated with this place from my first visit to this famous Chevron when I was still in high school and I would come up to visit Ole Miss. During my time in college and to this day when I'm in Oxford when the bars close you head to this Chevron for the famous chicken on a stick. This fried shish kabob is a tasty treat of fried goodness that is hard to equal. They also have other fried items and a few potato logs are always mandatory while the fried chicken, egg rolls, pizza rolls, chicken tenders, burritos and other items are good here as well. Sadly you still can't buy cold beer because of the STUPID Oxford drinking laws so you have to get both beer and ice to continue on into Late Night celebrations. read more

There's a "homey" atmosphere about the place. In the morning you'll see local elders or policemen having breakfast at the tables inside the middle of the gas station, same crowd around lunch too! They do plate lunches with veggies that are dang appetizing. Better than ajax veggie sides if you ask me... They also offer "normal" gas station cooking food too like chicken tenders, pizza sticks, potato wedges, fries. Try the potato wedges and ask for some honey mustard! 100 days sober. I had been over 100 days sober. Then I visited my friend in Oxford, and she told me about the legendary chicken-on-a-stick for drunk Ole Miss students. I had to try it even though I was sober. It's a full-size kebab of white meat - breaded, fried, and peppery seasoned with choice of dipping sauces. It was so good that I decided to binge drink the next night and just to try it drunk. (As is tradition, we took a whiskey shot at Faulkner's grave.) And you know what - it was worth it. It somehow seems fitting that Oxford would be the home to a Chevron station that had its own Yelp page. I read about the Chicken-on-a-Stick in the college newspaper and had to check this place out. Man, what a deal! I had the hot chicken, soaked in hot sauce, with four massive chunks on a stick that also seemed to bend with the weight. And it was only $3 bucks. Yes, it was absolutely bad for health. Yes, it was incredibly messy to eat. Did I make a goddamn mess of myself and my shirt trying to eat it? Yes. Was it worth it? Oh hell yes. read more

Yes, I wanted COS stone-cold sober. I went to my Mecca at 12:01 am on a Monday night and they were gone. Did I return Tuesday morning on a full stomach to seek out this wondrous creation of fried meat? Yes, yes I did. I was impressed by the size of my chicken. It was a hearty serving, and full of nicely breaded white chunks of meat. I was given a choice of five different dippin' sauces, but went with honey mustard and ranch. The ladies at the counter were wonderful (they called me "baby"), and they had some mighty fine looking potato logs as well. Looks like I will be doing a return road trip soon. The name Chevron to a drunken Ole Miss student is synomous with chicken on a stick and other cheap, late-night munchies...egg rolls, fried chicken, chicken on a stick, potato logs, etc can be found in the case next to the check out. My personal favorite was the pizza roll...think pepperoni hot pocket. Never had it sober....and I can't say I would recommend it. read more
