We had a great stay at the Chestnut Hill Hotel. Our stay began with a warm welcome from Adam who was at the reception desk. He was very friendly and helped us to make a dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant that he recommended. (It was a great recommendation, by the way!) I then was greeted by the hotel owner as he assisted me as I moved luggage from my car into the hotel. Overall, it was such a wonderful way to begin the stay after a long day of travel. The room itself was very comfortable. We were so pleased to be able to stay here with our little dog as has the added bonus of being pet friendly. The soap in the bathroom smelled really divine and the room was set up with a coffee maker. We also enjoyed a hearty breakfast the following morning. The tables we're beautifully set with China and the buffet included fresh cut fruit, yogurt, waffles, hard boiled eggs, cereal, fresh juices and coffee. What a treat! If you are looking for a nice place to stay, look no further! You will not be disappointed! read more

Pros: Great, friendly staff. Bed was very comfortable. Elevator in main building. Perfect location. Convenience of decent food at grill next store (attached to hotel). Cons: No climate control in room. It was hot out and the air conditioning cut off for long periods throughout the night. It was really hard to operate the shower. A grab bar in shower would be appreciated. Any items put on sink counter became wet from water collecting there every time the sink was used. No towel rack or hook in reach of the sink. No hook by tub for easy access to towel. Toilet Paper and tissues supplied were thin and not soft. Fair: Breakfast just okay. Button for hot water required numerous pushes to fill cup. read more

What a superb stay in this wonderful hotel! The welcome from Michelle was the ideal start to an excellent stay. The rooms are beautiful and well appointed with quality linens, great towels, and L'Occitane toiletries. The Nespresso machine is another thoughtful guest amenity. The hotel is in an ideal setting in charming Chestnut Hill with adjacent restaurants and shops, and walking distance from more great shopping and attractions. We highly recommend this gem of a hotel! read more

Overall a decent boutique hotel in a great location. The hotel itself is walking distance to a lot of nice shops and restaurants. Parking behind the hotel was easy and plentiful although I arrived on a Monday evening. I imagine it would be a bit more crowded Thursday to Sunday. The hotel seemed a bit dated and the bathroom had some interesting hard to operate fixtures in the shower. The hotel staff were very friendly and cheerful and the complementary breakfast was decent. My only issue was the dog smell in my room. The hotel is pet friendly and apparently the last person to stay in my room had a dog. I'm allergic to dogs and spent most of my night sneezing and dripping snot . read more

You know, this place could be AWESOME...Great location within the marketplace with several restaurants and shops - the room itself is really nice but the bathrooms (in my experience and some of the other reviews) are just awful. There is little to no water pressure to take a shower - The shower knob is broken so it difficult to adjust the water temperature and turn the thing off. The toilet lever was broken and installed backwards - weird! If you don't jiggle the lever, the water will keep running. The water in the sink fills up quickly (I guess you need to snake the pipes) so if you shave, all the hair and stuff stay floating for a very long time - Not a good experience for the next person that needs to use it. Toilet paper holder broken - Very, very disappointing overall unfortunately. Again, this could be a great place to stay if they took care of the details. Somebody should read these reviews and investigate in detail to correct the issue. If they fixed the issues I would be willing to give them a 2nd chance. read more

My friend and I stayed at the Chestnut Hill Hotel a few weeks ago when we were in Philadelphia for a show. The hotel is in a great location and has a beautiful exterior. However, we had a few issues during our stay. My friend had sprained her ankle a day or two before our visit and was using crutches. When we arrived, the staff asked why we hadn't called to ask for a special room. It turns out that the rooms of the hotel are spread across two buildings (one of which doesn't have an elevator). She was able to move us, but I can't say that I anticipated that hotel had rooms that weren't accessible by elevator. The parking was rough, too. The description of the hotel said there was parking, but it turns out that the hotel's lot is shared with several other businesses, including a brewery. When we arrived on Friday in early evening, there was no parking available, and when we checked in we were told that it's not usually possible to park during hours the brewery is open. Lastly, on the morning we were checking out (we only stayed one night), we realized our shower wasn't working. We both tried to figure it out, but we couldn't and then the water just ran (a drip drip drip) after that. We told the front desk staff when we were checking out, and other than offering to let us use another room, they didn't say much (they said maybe we just hadn't used it right). The hotel definitely isn't a budget hotel, so I was a little disappointed by the service and our overall stay. Good location and beautiful building, but the rest didn't really impress on this first visit. read more

Room rate looked great but they hid tax, service fees that were 50% avoided the room rate. So we didn't stay.

Great little boutique hotel tucked away in Chestnut Hill PA. Great amenities like thick warm towels and robes, comfortable beds, very nice breakfast (included), and a small but nicely set up gym. Quaint restaurant and bar attached serves lunch and dinner. But the real charm was the staff! Reception on all shifts just terrific, housekeeping was amazing and the buffet set up team was more than accommodating. If I ever get out that way again, this is my only choice! read more

My partner and I had the pleasure of staying here on a house hunting trip ahead of an upcoming move to Philly. The location was perfect for exploring the area and the vibe perfectly matched many aspects of Chestnut Hill - understated elegance and a diverse and welcoming atmosphere. Perfectly situated on the Main Street with access to fun and tasty restaurant options. Their COVID protocols were perfect and they helped put our minds at ease so we could better concentrate on our tasks. Special shout-out for Michele on front desk in the evenings. From her initial greeting and efficient checkin, through arranging for us to get a late meal just as the attached restaurant was closing the kitchen and final discussion about our weekend she was the PERFECT spokesperson for the hotel. Michele sets the bar high for front of house service and professionalism. Not surprising for such a great establishment, but worth mentioning since she remains the "face" of our successful visit! read more

I have stayed several times at this hotel as I have family in the area and my daughter attends university nearby. This last stay will be the last stay.... Upon arrival, I turned down my bed to find the linens stained with blood. The front desk girl was trying to be accommodating and offered to get us more linens. Three tips back and forth to the linen closet and we still ended up with stained linens (see photos). I made the beds with just a sheet and did stay because it was late at night. Spoke to the manager the next morning and there was no resolution or apology. Hotel is in a nice location but you stay at a hotel to sleep and in order to do that comfortably, my expectation is that the linens are clean. I was nervous about what else was not kept clean. read more

This hotel is under the process of being renovated. So, during our stay there was a few issues like losing electricity and no water. However, that set aside the room is beautiful. They have a nice flat screen tv. A very high end bathroom with great lighting. The continental breakfast was well prepared and actually pretty good. Additionally, you can't beat the area it's in. You can easily walk around to dinner and shopping. The only negative to this hotel is the staff is still working out the kinks. The front desk usually appears confused and the cleaning staff did a spotty job of cleaning our room. But, attempting to stay positive just like the renovation issues I am sure the staff issues will clean up. This hotel is on the up and up! read more

Perfect small hotel for a little escape! My mom and I spent 2 nights there last week, and it was the ideal respite from pandemic life. The rooms were comfortable and well-appointed. (I had to do a little work, and my room had a couch, armchair, and desk area.) Lovely L'Occitane toiletries and good towels. There was a little traveler library on our floor, too. COVID precautions were definitely in effect...hand sanitizer in the lobby and elevator, staff wearing masks, and notices on the room doors when the room was last cleaned, and that it has been empty since that date... Other nice touches include free water bottles, free parking and pet-friendly! The Chestnut Hill area feels like a quaint village, and there were nice dining options with outdoor seating in the immediate area, and cute shops, too. We'll definitely be back! read more

Best. Hotel. Experience. Ever. I have been coming to this hotel since the early 90's and it never disappoints. I hadn't been here since the massive renovation and was so pleasantly surprised to see it had retained its charm and character! The staff has been amazing. I got here yesterday and the employees love the place, people, and each other. It's a really really nice vibe. Calva is head of housekeeping and seems to do a lot more since she modified my reservation to include more nights a few days ago so I am extremely fond of her since she kind of helped to make my travel plans come to fruition. The place is clean, well-appointed, and "killing it with service". I couldn't be happier with my decision to stay here. My 14 year old girls are loving the market behind us since it has every food item they could ever want and everything is in walking distance. I will never go anywhere else - this is an amazing boutique hotel. read more

I had never been in this area before and it feels like it's straight out of a storybook. The streets, buildings, and light posts were all decorated for the holidays, adorned with poinsettias and white lights. The hotel has got so much historic charm and the most friendly staff. My room was very homey with a large comfy bed with very clean and soft sheets. The bathroom had a large walk in shower with a glass door. I did notice that the shower did not drain as effectively as it should have. The continental breakfast is delicious and located in the "Bombay room." There are lots of good options and great coffee available. Overall, an incredible place with so much character located in a great part of Philadelphia. read more

Great hotel charm and friendly staff. Unfortunately, we checked in at 9 pm on a Saturday night and while the bar was open, they locked it and said it was last call for those remaining inside but no new customers are allowed. We stayed here while visiting schools around the area, and the hotel looked really cute from the outside. The receptionist was really friendly and nice. When we got to our room, it was a different story. The bedspread had a few discolored spots, and when we tried to cover it up with the blanket that was in the closet, we discovered that it had stains all over it as well. We looked at the sheets, and they had scattered random blemishes on them as well. We asked them if we could have a different room, and they gave us a new one, which was better, but did have a small bloodstain and a few tiny blemishes in the bed linens. There just doesn't seem to be any pride with this place. Everything is old, worn-down, and dirty. It looked like it used to be a really cute, nice hotel, but there was no upkeep. Pros are that it's really close to a nice shopping district/good restaurants like the Melting Pot, and that they have their own parking lot. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Edit- 9/20/10 We've since moved to Philly and met some classmates who work there right now. They say things have gotten much better since we visited and that there are a lot of reforms. read more

Not impressed. First, the parking is a public lot and we had to drive around looking for a spot because it was full when we arrived. Then, we had to carry our bags in because the one luggage cart they had was in use and we didn't want to wait around. We stayed in the main building, which needs to be updated. The carpet in the room was dank and mildewy and the room in need of a paint job. The blanket on the bed was not doubled sheeted which is the minimum one would expect. Additionally, the lighting in the room was poor even with all the lamps on. The breakfast served was similar to those you get at a chain along the interstate, not what is expected at a far from inexpensive boutique type hotel or inn. On the positive side, the hotel is in a great location. read more

What a dump. Dirty, stained room, partially painted bathroom lacking a shower mat - those were the highlights. We were robbed. Noisy front room above the cafe. Oh and did I mention the instant coffee, frozen fruit and fake OJ at the free breakfast? Why did we put up with this? Location in beautiful Chestnut Hill. Next time we will research this better. read more

Wow, what a great surprise this place turned out to be! I made last minute reservations for a much needed night alone with my wife for her birthday and we were both thrilled with the choice. I often frequent the Farmer's Market which is adjacent to the hotel, but have never tried the hotel itself. The staff at the hotel could not have more welcoming and are a fantastic representation of the business. Our room, in the Carriage House, was just wonderful. It had any modern luxury that one could ask for, with a great decor. The room was clean and plenty big enough. The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom (including a shower and claw-foot tub) was awesome. We enjoyed a few beers and a great sandwich at the bar before going to our room. The night was just about perfect. I could not recommend this place any more. It was just what we needed and will certainly be returning soon. read more

Located in a cute neighborhood with lots of shops. I love the market behind the hotel. They have their own free parking and wifi. Hotel staff is nice as well. The room was basic with lots of drapery and carpet. It's a bit too much dust in the room and being allergic to dust, it made my stay a bit unpleasant. The bathroom feels clean so that was nice. The pillows were awful - oddly shaped and flattens easily. For an overnight stay, this hotel is considerable. Not sure about longer stays. read more

The room was nice, but NOISY. Do not stay here if you are looking for peace & quiet. Something was being power- washed outside of my window at midnight. Also, the fireplace, although nice to look at, was noisy while it was on. The bed, jacuzzi bathtub, and glass shower stall were nice. All of the pre-programmed buttons on the phone went to the wrong places. I couldn't reach the front desk except by calling the actual phone number. The best things about this hotel are the eateries surrounding it. read more

AVOID!! Unfortunately, this wonderful inn/hotel has seen beyond better days. To begin with, the room, rugs in the room and throughout the property are filthy. The one robe in the closet is threadbare, the AC works on and off the windows open but no screens so flies come in the room. There is no security on-site and the representative at the front desk is rarely there. Anyone can enter the hotel from the numerous restaurants that share the hotel space and enter the elevators etc. The person at the front desk who did appear when we checked in was monosyllabic and hostile and this is the person who checks you in and greets you! At night there was a man passed out on a chair in the tiny lobby reeking of pot. Is he a guest or some guy just wandering in? In either instance this is not acceptable. Our light in our room was held together with hair clips, the toilet broken, the sink faucet broken. Housekeeping leaves at 1:00 in the afternoon, so if you check in later forget about getting toilet paper the only person on to bring it to you is the front desk person who is rarely there. The housekeeper that morning was also rude, knocking on our door early in the morning and yelling "Housekeeping" when the do not disturb sign was clearly displayed. We were told that there were no other rooms available when we made the reservation and when we decided to not stay for the rest of our stay and check out we THEN were offered another room. No one there cares about your security or if you are in a clean and safe environment. Why waste your money, go anywhere else and just visit Chestnut Hill. Shame on the owner who has done this to this historic property which could have been grand or at least clean. read more

Charming hotel right on Germantown Ave (be sure to ask about the parking lot out back). Rooms are more spacious than you would expect for a cozy, historic spot (we were on the 4th floor with a nice street view). They do free continental breakfast, plus have access inside to two restaurants, one meh (Chestnut Hill Grill) and one amazing (Paris Bistro). Bottom line: a great spot for an overnight getaway in one of the nicest neighborhoods on the city outskirts. read more

Great stay at the Chestnut Hill hotel, we will come back and stay again. The staff was very helpful and accommodating to our changes in plans. We stayed in the post office building which is separate from the main building. Some people on here mentioned that you have to go outside to get to it which is true and it was raining when we arrived but there was a cover overhead that helped. The room had interesting decor that made us laugh a little but the important part is it's clean and comfortable. The marble bath was the best part, gorgeous. The light up adjustable makeup mirror a nice touch. Keep in mind they allow pets and every time we passed a room in our hallway we set off a dog barking. Didn't bother us but light sleepers should be aware, There is a small refrigerator in the room which is handy and an expresso machine. We prefer coffee so we went to the breakfast downstairs off the lobby. Although nicely presented with cups and saucers there isn't much to breakfast besides coffee juice, starch and sugar. The danishes and bagels tasted old and like they were from a grocery store bakery. I think for the price of the room they could spring for decent baked goods if they're not going to serve hot food. I'd grab coffee and eat elsewhere. This hotel is a great to stay at instead of in the city, it's a quick train ride away and train station is a couple blocks away, trains run every hour. Overall a nice stay in beautiful Chestnut Hill. read more

So, I stayed here a total of one night. I'm glad it wasn't any longer. The only thing I liked about this hotel was that the staff was friendly and it had a great location. The hotel room itself was built for a man. I say this because i'm 5'5 but I just kept getting bruised on all the furniture. Also, the furniture was placed too high above the ground. The hotel was old so of course it gonna have old building issues. But the musty smell and bad air was not okay. Last thing I wanted to mention was breakfast, it was terrible. There weren't many options, nothing hot but a bad waffle. And everything else was gone or expired. read more

My sister and I really enjoyed this hotel. We had a last-minute trip to Philadelphia in the Chestnut HIll area. I called on short notice (about 3pm) and there were only 2 rooms left that night. We were very grateful to have a very lovely, wonderfully appointed room in this carefully renovated historic hotel and there was a nice, simple breakfast in the morning. There were several restaurant choices adjacent and fantastic ice cream down the block. What was a bit nuts is that the next day, it became necessary to stay another night. I called late in the afternoon the second day and was again able to secure a room for that second night. I was able to see two different rooms, one a King, one 2 Queens, both large and comfortable, beds especially comfortable and lush, and the rooms quiet. Lovely bathroom appointments too. AND, the staff could not have been lovelier and more professional. Very grateful for the stay in this cute boutique hotel in the heart of Chestnut Hill. I will be back as I expect to visit the area about once every month or two in the next year. read more

I'm always pleased with this place. It's quiet, with excellent access to the city via SEPTA, and the rooms and bathrooms re more than nice. It's not the Ritz. It's not Sleep Inn. It's a a boutique hotel with nice rooms, big beds, charm, and five killer restaurants within a stones throw. The staff is always nicer than nice, and the attached Chestnut Grill is always lots of fun. I have never had any issues with booking or room cleanliness or any sort of issues with fellow guests, so I'm going to give this place 4 out of 5 stars-simply because the five stars hotels are full of sh*theads. This place is not! Also there is extremely limited parking. read more

The Chestnut Hill Hotel is a fantastic little boutique hotel with awesome service in the perfect location. The rooms have been renovated recently. It's set right in the middle of everything, shops, restaurants, cafes, and a farmers market next door! We stayed in the old elevator lift room and I absolutely loved it. It had a fireplace, a huge bathroom and was super cozy. The beautiful wood and iron elevator support system that sits above the bed is a very unique addition. We also had a delicious brunch at The Chestnut Grill on premise. read more

I have waited to write my review as I sent an email to the hotel and was hoping for a response before I posted but I have not received one. We were disappointed in our stay mostly from a housekeeping perspective. First let me say finding the parking lot was not all that easy as it wasn't clearly indicated on the website or at the hotel but we took a guess and pulled up the side street and found a parking lot with other stores etc and decided it must be the right one. You can't see the hotel from the parking lot so it is a guess. Parking was a nightmare Saturday night as this is a public lot and we had to circle several times until someone left. We were told by the front desk you have to park on the street and move later when there is a spot which is not so appealing and after the snow there was little to no parking as the streets had not been plowed. Check in was smooth and accommodating. The hotel is old and I found the furniture in the "lobby" to be dated and a bit frumpy. Found our room after winding through the halls. The room was nice, nothing over the top with amenities, furnishings etc and the refrigerator is very, very small, a bottle of wine barely fits lying down on an angle. The beds were very comfortable. The issues started when my friend went to pull down the sheets at bedtime and found a pubic hair in her bed. We also found stains on the quilt that appeared to be old blood, this was on both beds and numerous spots. The towels also had stains on them that should have been bleached out. The next morning we requested the sheets and quilts be replaced and they were that day. We had used all the glasses the night before and left them in plain sight on the dresser, they were not replaced and not cleaned. The soap and shampoo was also not replaced in the bathroom. My other complaint was the breakfast. I wrongly assumed this would be a B&B style fresh breakfast when in fact it was exactly what you would get in a chain hotel except you had linen napkins and china. Nice touch but the linen napkins were a wrinkled mess which in my opinion defeats the purpose of using linen. So, I think that there is clearly a quality control issue with housekeeping. When I am paying $259.00 per night I expect an attention to detail and not to find hair and stains on my bed linens and to have clean glasses.Housekeeping needs spot checks and supervision to ensure standards are kept. read more

It was freezing cold the night I stayed here. The gal at the front desk was kind enough to bring a space heater because the heat wasn't working. I called at 11:00 to get another room because I couldn't take it any more, and she offered me the suite. I told her that I was here on business and was paying the corporate rate, and that I appreciated her gesture. When I went to the front desk, there was a strange man there (who seemed to also work for the hotel) who argued with her in front of me over the rate change and that the manager would be angry if I was given the other room (even though my room was basically uninhabitable). I told her not to worry about it and just give me whatever they had available at our corporate rate, even though they should have given me the available upgrade because of the inconvenience. No snark about the front desk gal, but her colleague's attitude was really uncalled for. Enough to warrant a bad review from me. The original room, although cold, was nicely updated. It was also in the annexed building, which was undergoing renovations. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have been put there in the first place. The replacement room wasn't much warmer and didn't have the king bed that I wanted, but it is late and I am tired. read more

On the fence with this hotel. After having issues with another Bed and Breakfast, the Chestnut Hill Hotel was a sigh of relief. When my sister and I arrived the check in process was smooth and our hotel was ready early. With our 2 queen beds, my bed had a small stain on the comforter (no worries, I don't really use that), but my sister's bed looked fine. The hair dryer was fantastic and the mini fridge worked great. My biggest beef with the room is the loud heating unit. Very grateful that it worked, but it was a little obnoxious. The bedroom/bathroom was what I expected after booking. The free breakfast was another story. Saturday morning there was a buffet of oatmeal, waffles, hard boiled eggs, defrosted fruit, yogurt, granola, and some sweetened dried cranberries. The lack of meat was a little bit of a shock since I'm from Texas, but there were plenty of protein options. Sunday breakfast was the bigger issue. They had less options (while Sunday is generally when you'd expect a greater display), and they only had one guy in charge of cleaning and restocking the food. The poor guy was running around constantly and guests were getting frustrated. Since they set the table for you, guests must pick up plates from an empty table instead of from the buffet line. Although it is nice to have a set table, it's a little awkward. In addition, the tea dispenser had coffee drips coming out of it (even though it's hot water only), so it took a couple tries to get a clear cup of tea. I paid so much for the room that the breakfast was a huge let down. Their breakfast quality in relation to their room rate is the biggest reason why I would debate booking again. SEPTA has a train stop near the hotel, so it is incredibly easy to get from the airport to the Chestnut Hill Hotel ($9, 3/2014). On top of that, there are great restaurants to eat at (Green Soul and Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant were our stops) and Bredenbeck's Bakery is incredible. All in all, not a bad place to stay. However don't expect much from the breakfast buffet and plan an early lunch. read more

I love that the Chestnut Hill Hotel has a long history (the building itself has been around since 1894...whaaaaaat!)...I love that they are dog friendly (additional $25.00 per night with pup)...and I love that the staff are overall very friendly and courteous. It is, however, extremely expensive ($179.00 per night for a room with a queen bed, that price jumps to $229.00 per night on a Saturday) and for what you are paying, you should be getting a better experience. I was here for a few nights over the weekend and the housekeeping services leave a lot to be desired. It seemed like the only thing they did was make the bed...and even then, it was done so carelessly. While the blankets and sheets were tucked in, the massive decorative pillows that I had put on the floor next to the bed were still there when I got back to the room (so, did they vacuum, or not...?). I had also put a pillow aside the night before because there were weird stains on it (it was late and I just put that pillow aside, assuming housekeeping would take care of it the next day) and the same pillowcase was still on my bed when I returned. Really? That's where I put my face...please change the pillowcases...just, please. Additionally, the shampoo, conditioner, and soap were not refilled. This may be standard for them, but for the price I paid? I don't think another 1.5 oz of shampoo and conditioner is unreasonable. Housekeeping aside, when I spoke to the front desk staff later over the phone (side note: I wasn't able to speak to anyone in person because they were called away to help another guest), the person on the other line offered no remorse for their mediocre housekeeping experience. I'm not expecting a free room, but an apology goes a long way. And whether she was or not, I definitely felt like the person I was speaking to just thought, "Let me just file that complaint in this imaginary folder that I'm not going to do anything about..." Chestnut Hill is a quaint, adorable little neighborhood that is a quick train ride to downtown, though it offers a lot of explorable gems in its own right. It's a shame that the Chestnut Hill Hotel does not live up to the standards of it's surroundings. read more

I have stayed here several times and I couldn't have been more pleased. I live locally but once I had an emergency and they told me to come right in even though it was just 11 o'clock in the morning, nowhere near check in time. We stayed here the weekend of my wedding at the Valley Green Inn (which is amazing btw :) My husband and I had a great supreme king in the postal annex. We mostly have great things to say about the hotel, a few cons to be wary of: PROS: Great location in cozy chestnut hill with quick access to center city, manayunk, king of prussia Free Parking Restaurant in the hotel Free breakfast Unique rooms (supreme king was a great size, comfy bed) Overall the room was very clean Close to Valley Green Inn if you are having or attending a wedding there Walking distance to lots of shops and restaurants in Chestnut Hill Lots of hiking/biking/running trails in walking distance Very friendly staff (brought us flowers on our wedding day!) Hotel staff was responsive when we needed something to clean the dishes in our room, toilet paper, etc. CONS: Air conditioning in the main building was broken for our guests staying there Hotel messed up our family's reservations (and we heard overbooked others -- we read that this happens here so we confirmed our reservation several times beforehand and had no issues) The shower has an odd design; the first try we ended up with water all over the floor Had to call housekeeping for some basic things and ended up taking out our own trash read more
