I was truly DESPERATE. I had a custom-made bridesmaid dress that was purchased online; despite providing proper measurements, it was one size too small (attractively accentuating my gut) and instead of being a relaxed A-line skirt, it was a ridiculously short and tight pencil skirt that made it nearly impossible to walk/sit/exhale/use the bathroom. Not having the time to re-make the dress, I found Cherie's Yelp reviews and gave her a call. She soothed my frayed nerves and promised to do what she can, despite the fact that she was swamped with other dress alternations, as the late summer/early fall is peak wedding season. I initially asked for a side slit (as it would the quickest fix) but in the end she also let out the side seam to provide additional breathing/belly room - extra work which she didn't even charge for (it came out to less than $20 with tax.) She literally saved me a TON of unneeded stress and grief, as the dress fits perfectly now. I've read other reviews where she's apparently got "an attitude". For the record, her attitude is pretty freaking AWESOME: she's a no-nonsense lady who tells it like it is. If you're asking her to do something unrealistic, she will say so - as it should be. (And yes, she did rightfully chastise me for buying a bridesmaid dress online. Lesson learned!) Not only is she a talented seamstress who knows what she's doing, but she's a lady who will espouse motherly advice and opinions with hilariously blunt honesty. When I asked my girlfriends who I should take my bridesmaid dress to for alterations, the vote was unanimous: Cheries Dressmaking. "There is no one else," one said. "You'll never find better," said another. I quickly crosschecked their reference with the Interweb, and my fellow Yelp reviewers backed their claims. So off I went for a stroll down the beautiful Markham Street (side note: one of Toronto's prettiest little stretches) and brought my floor-length gown up the stairs to meet a new friend in Cherie. Her tiny little dress shop sits above a store. She works frantically from a room full of gowns, with old patterns pinned on the wall and an adorable sewing station that bathes in the sunlight from a huge bay window. The wonderful Cherie is as funny as she is talented. When I initially purchased my dress from a bridal shop in Ajax, I left in tears as they forced me to order a size that was much too large. I had been on a steady weight loss kick and knew the piece I had to sign off on wasn't going to work by the time the wedding came around, and man was I right. Cherie was not impressed with the sizing and told me I should have put my foot down more (she's right) but that she could fix it (because she's awesome). So she took my measurements and we parted ways. Three weeks later I went to pick up my dress and it was again way too big! Cherie double checked her original measurements, but I had since achieved new ones. While I was (super) proud with the results, (crazy) panic set in when the dress didn't fit. The wedding was two days away! "We just need to take it in again," Cherie said. I was leaving town the very next day. "Can it be ready by tomorrow?" I asked, fighting tears. "It has to be don't it!" she said. And it was. Cherie truly is a miracle worker. She'll entertain you while you wait and she'll get you what you want. Since the topic of tailoring and clothing alteration came up in the forum recently, I thought I'd put a word in for Cherie. That word is 'awesome'. You'll find Cherie in her sewing studio on the second floor of one of the Mirvish Village row houses. She has many years of experience altering clothing and also sewing patterns on commission. Bring her any kind of alteration: pants, a skirt, a dress, whatever. Or, bring a pattern you're interested in getting made and she'll talk with you about what kind of fabric would be best. In the case of a friend who had a bridesmaid dress made by Cherie, she even improved upon the pattern and made a much more attractive finished product! When you can see lovely Cherie for affordable, expert clothing alteration, why on earth would you take your mending to a quick tailor booth at a shopping mall? read more

Called in to ask if she fixes zippers and she said yes. Seemed like the place to go seeing as all the reviews were excellent. When I got there, no greeting, just a look of disdain. Asked again about zippers and she replied without even looking up or getting up. I had to ask her to even look at it. I took off my coat and she said "well you don't even have another coat. It doesn't take two minutes. She sassed me and kissed her teeth. Maybe this was ignorant of me to think she could do it quickly or that I could maybe wait while she did it but none-the-less she could have avoided the rudeness. I wouldn't recommend this place. YELP DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Cherie was amazing! I called two months before a wedding to get my bridesmaids dress altered, and I was shocked when the next available appointment was in a month! After reading all the reviews on yelp I was already very excited to meet Cherie and have her alter my dress, and that 1 month wait was worth it. She was very nice and friendly, and she knows what she's doing. I brought in my dress to get it shortened and tighten around my chest area for only $60. It probably would've cost me $100+ at David's Bridal! I would definitely recommend her to anyone that I know, and advise you all to call a couple of months ahead to make an appointment! Unfortunately she mentioned that her whole street has to move because they sold Honest Ed's. I hope she doesn't move, or if she does, I hope to be able to find her! PS: it's cash only. read more

I bought my wedding dress at David's Bridal, but decided to take it to Cherie's instead after reading all of the great reviews here. I am so glad I did. Cherie is caring, warm and comforting. She is so patient with all of my questions, and did a wonderful job in hemming my 8 layers of tulle. The only downside of this place is that it is a tiny studio, so there wasn't much space for me to test-walk the hem. I was terrified that the delicate organza would get caught by the metal legs of the front table and all of the mess around, and the mirror was too narrow and short to see myself completely (I'm 5'10" with heels). I believe they are moving soon though so hopefully this would improve. I am very thankful to have met Cherie, and will be back with future dress alterations. read more

I purchased a sample wedding gown knowing it would need considerable alterations. Cherie did an amazing job! The dress fit like a dream and turned out the way I imagined (maybe better). My original gown had a huge train with a scalloped lace hem. I asked for the train to be cut but wanted to maintain the lace hem, and by hand she removed the lace and reattached it after cutting most of the train. It looked beautiful and the work was exceptional! Highly recommended. Her prices were reasonable for the amount of work that was done. I brought my wedding dress to Cherie for alterations and couldn't have been happier with her work. The dress was a floor sample from Kleinfeld's so it need to be taken in quite a lot and the beading needed to be repaired from damage from the fitting room clips they use in store. Cherie is knowledgeable and warm, her prices are fair and she did excellent work. I brought my mom and sister in so Cherie could also do their dresses for my wedding and they both turned out great as well. read more

I just picked up my wedding dress from Cherie and it is perfect. Michelle F is right, Cherie is truly your straight talking aunt. She'll tell you what you need. She does quality work and makes sure that everything is perfect. I brought her my wedding dress that I bought off the rack, I wanted her to cut off the train and make everything one length. She cut off the train, had me come back again to double check the hem was correct before hemming it completely. She also found a few imperfections on the dress. I went to pick up the dress on Tuesday and we realized it was tight across the back where the lace was so she actually let it out a bit and had me come pick it up the next morning instead. I went here b/c of the yelp reviews and well, true to form!! Cherie was delightful. I needed a whole whack of suit pants hemmed. She was quick about pinning my pants, and quick about getting them back to me. I'm super busy, so this was important. Reasonable prices, $12 to hem a pair of pants, and $5 for a quick mend. A bit out of my way, but I will go back for sure. Parking available. Only criticism--the change room could use a makeover. After a very poor experience with another TO seamstress for which I left the review she deserves, I was dreading to wear my ruined wedding dress a week before the event. I called Cherie based on the review and was so lucky she took me last minute out of the goodness of her heart! She was able to fix the dress and make it fit like a glove. I brought my beaded wedding gown to Cherie and it was a total disaster. She seemed confused when I called to check on how the dress was going. When I finally had my last fitting, the dress was gapping in the front, revealing half my chest and the work was horrible. I had to beg another seamstress to fix my dress three days before my wedding!!! She said the fix was simple, and wasn't sure why Cherie said it was the best she could do. She was a pleasant lady, but I was very disappointed in her work and it caused me quite a bit of stress. read more

I needed a small alteration on my last-minute bridesmaid dress (I take fake full responsibility for my predicament) and came across reviews for Cherie's online. I was a bit hesitant due to some comments about her "attitude" but decided to give her a call. Best decision I made all week. She listened to my situation and buffed me for leavings things til last minute. But after grumbling exactly the way a Caribbean great aunt would, she sent me to Mokuba and told me to come see her on Saturday. She fixed my dress within a few days (just in time for the wedding) and charged a very fair price (a fraction of what David's Bridal quoted). Cherie is a kind, talented, and no-nonsense kind of lady; my new go-to seamstress. I only hope she doesn't decide to retire anytime soon! read more

I called to find out about dress alterations. there was no voicemail to leave a message. I called back the next day and someone answered, very brusquely and I said hesistantly I need some alterations for a dress. Her:"WHEN"? me "By the end of the month" Her- "You not giving me much time. I need 4 weeks". The tone was so rude like I was doing her a favour to give her my business. I am sorry but I will not be calling there again. Less than 2 weeks before I leave for my wedding, and I've been left in the lurch with no wedding dress. Cherie adjusted my dress to be way too small, she threw out the extra fabric she cut out of it, and she has told me that she doesn't have time to fix it before my wedding. She did not apologize, she showed absolutely no pity or remorse, and she charged me $70 for ruining my dress. She may be fine to work with if she doesn't make a mistake, but if she does, she will be ruthless with you. I tried to find a way to still wear the dress (e.g. by not wearing a bra, by only zipping it up halfway) but nothing works. (By the way, I did not gain any weight, I actually lost a little). So before you use Cherie, take a moment to imagine what I am going through, and how it would feel to have no wedding dress and less than 2 weeks to go. read more

Just OK. I went to Cheries to hem a pair of expensive jeans, based on the excellent Yelp reviews. Cherie was friendly and chatty but it took over half an hour just to drop off the jeans. The original hem had a half-inch stitch that ran diagonally from the top of the hem to the bottom of the jeans (a flourish of that particular brand) and Cherie refused to do it, even though it would have involved a straight stitch and maybe 5 seconds of extra work. I decided it didn't really matter, so I left the jeans with her anyway. She was up-front that it would take over two weeks for hemming, which I accepted even though that seemed ridiculous. I was shocked when I picked them up, though - the hemming was worse than I could have done myself. The fabric was lumpy and the stitches weren't straight. I won't be going back. read more

Went to her shop, based off the other reviews. I'm not sure what the others are saying, it seems to be false. Or did not like me. Either or, I found her in her tiny shop on the 2nd floor and she did not even mention who she was or even welcomed me. She rudely asked what I wanted and rudely declined to make the dress I wanted. I'm honestly not sure how she has got many good reviews; perhaps her skills may be of great quality, but her attitude is not. Perhaps it is better she declined than having to put up to her rather rude attitude. Go at your own risk, I do not recommend it. She is just so rude at first impression. read more

After reading all the positive reviews here I thought Cheries would be a great place to take my dress: sadly, I was mistaken. While I can't speak to the quality of her work, I can say she was utterly unpleasant and lacked any "customer service" skills. When I got there, the first thing I was asked was whether I had an appointment or not. When I said I didn't, she flat out refused to inquire further: even though all I needed was a simple shortening of straps. She came across completely hostile and I would definitely not recommend this place to any of my friends unless they don't mind being treated with extreme rudeness. read more

Nearly bankrupted me - charged $200 to take up a double lined skirt hem, and also suggested that I take in the top - which I thought was fine - for $100, but it wasn't improved at all. I ended up spending 6 times more than the clothes were actually worth. She did a good job with another dress and is no doubt a skilled seamstress, but next time I'd ask for a quote *before* spending a lot of time discussing alterations in depth so I don't feel railroaded into it, and I'd leave enough time to go to another seamstress - or buy a brand new dress for half the money! - if the price is too high. read more

A year after my experience at Cheries Dressmaking, I'm still so peeved about this service I had to write a review. It took going to a great dressmaker for another bridesmaid dress that helped me realise what a joke this experience was. I knew I couldn't let these great reviews lure another person like they did for me. Me and another bridesmaid took our dresses to Cherie two months in advance to get the hem shortened and pulled in at the sides. When I asked Cherie how much the alterations would cost, she brushed the whole thing aside and told me not to worry about the price, it would be "cheap". Rookie mistake on my part. Mysteriously, the other bridemaid also didn't get a straight answer for a quote for the work. A month later, we called Cheries to find out about the status of our dresses and they still weren't ready. Two weeks before the wedding, still weren't ready. 5 days before the wedding, WE had to call Cherie to tell her we had to pick up the dresses. Looking back, this shouldn't have surprised me since the place is totally disorganised with stuff everywhere. When we finally went to pick up the dresses, for a hem and the dress to be taken in at the sides (this dress was cotton, no boning, no lining, no complicated designs) she tried to charge us $85 each for the alterations!! To put this into perspective, the other bridesmaids each paid $35 from various tailors around the city for the exact same work. In the end we negotiated paying $55 because we obviously needed these dresses back. The way she justified the discrepancy between her $85 and $35 was her fine craftsmenship but I didnt see any of that. Because she took so long to have the dresses done, we didn't have time for a second fitting and the work that she did do didn't even look good. I think Cherie tried to take advantage of people who had to no choice but to pay for bridesmaids dress alterations, and purposely tried not to give us quotes to push us into a corner to get our dresses back. With all the great competition out there, I will never recommend Cherie to anyone looking for a fair, quality work. read more

I usually don't leave reviews but I feel like I have to with this one. I got my wedding dress altered here and it went all wrong. 1st thing: when I picked up my dress, I noticed a small black streak on the front of my dress which looked like grease. I asked Cherie if this grease was from her sewing machine as I know my dress didn't have that streak before, and I asked what could be done about it. She immediately became very defensive and argued that she doesn't use grease, and that it must've been there before. After insisting with her that all I wanted to know was what can I do to get the grease out, she suggested some dish soap with water. So I used a cotton swab with some dishsoap water and the grease came out. Fine. That one was solved. However, the 2nd issue: I had 2 fittings, and on my second fitting I noticed she had already cut the hem of the dress. I tried on the dress very briefly at that time and I didn't think much of the hem. And the 3rd time I saw her, I again tried the dress on very briefly, didn't say anything, and took home my dress. I knew that I felt the hem was slightly short, so I tried my dress on again at home and I realized the hem is 2-3 inches off the ground!! I tried everything, I tried ironing the crinoline, a shorter heel, but nope. The only way the dress would touch the ground would be if I wore no heels, and that was just not what I was looking for, plus I would look super short next to my fiancé if I didn't wear any heels. So I called Cherie, and told her about the short hem. Again, immediately she became very defensive and said that it was my fault for not noticing the hem was short at the fitting (although she had already cut the hem) and that she couldn't do anything for me (since the dress material was sheer organza and any material added would show and there obviously she can't lengthen the dress). And she also argued that she only took 1.75 inches off the length so it could not be possible that my dress was that short. (I wore my bra and heels to every fitting, so it could also not be possible that she only took 1.75inches off and it be 2-3inches too short now). Instead of trying to console or apologizing, all she did was argue, and mind you, I did not get upset over the phone and did not raise my voice. All I wanted to know was what can be done to fix the problem. Just her attitude in itself is so wrong to display especially to a stressed out bride. I paid her $400 in alterations, and she damaged my originally $1800 dress. In the end, she did not apologize and she did not compensate for any damages. So with 2 months left to the wedding date, I had to go buy another dress and ended up spending $1000+ on a new wedding dress. Brides can get stressed regardless, but you could imagine my upset and stress with this situation! I still feel she should have compensated for the damage, or at the very bit least show some compassion to this stressed bride and apologized for what happened. Also to note, she took 2 months to "alter" my dress. There are many other places that provide faster service. read more

I got married recently and went to Cherie to get two dresses altered - my bridal gown and reception dress. I called Cherie 3ms in advance and thought I was ahead of the game. To my dismay, Cherie was booked up at least 6ms in advance! She is clearly popular and well-known so I begged and begged and begged and she thankfully took me in! I'm fairly petite (5 ft 3 inches) and small on top so I needed both dresses shortened and major reconstructive surgery to the top of my bridal gown (the corset). She's super funny, honest, smart as a whip and chided me (rightly so) on choosing a style that didn't particularly fit me well. She did an amazing job, considering the major reconstructive surgery around the bust area, and she is reasonably priced :) . My dress fit perfectly! I love Cherie and would definitely bring all my fancy outfits to her because I trust no one else. As per other reviews below, she accepts cash only. I strongly recommend!!! read more

What a disappointing and stressful experience. I went to Cherie with my wedding dress based on overwhelmingly positive reviews here on Yelp. It was a simple dress made of chiffon. She held onto it for several months but when I called the day before pick-up, she was "just getting it out to work on" that day. I went in on the scheduled pick-up day and everything about it was wrong. She'd shortened the length of the dress and the length of the bodice area way too much. She puckered the delicate chiffon fabric and got needle holes and pulls through it even though it was being taken in, not out. She didn't hem evenly. She also didn't adjust the underlining layer which was all lumpy between the chiffon and the bra cups which she did two quick dart stitches to attach, not even putting them inside the lining and not even taking the time to smooth out the fabric over the cups. So it wouldn't fit me in length both in bodice and from there to the floor, was ruined all in the back of the top area, and was lumpy and gross in the front. Unfortunately, I didn't have the strength or guts to speak up. I tried on a few things but she talked over me, using fabric jargon to excuse her errors. It looked like she did all the alterations in 5 minutes flat. She charged me $135. I paid it, was friendly, and left. Then I spent the next few days crying. I was thankfully connected with a reliable seamstress who saw me this weekend out of the goodness of her heart and is doing what she can to fix it. We have to remove the entire top area of the back. I have to change my shoes and wear completely flat ones because we can't do anything to bring back the length. The extensive second set of alterations are costing me over $200 but otherwise I'd need to shop for a new dress. I strongly recommend not bringing your wedding dress to Cherie. If you do, be very clear about what you want and make sure she takes the time to measure you properly. She didn't take time with me from day 1. Don't be shy to speak your mind. For me, I decided I'd rather cut my losses than face the anxiety of insulting someone's work and having a confrontation. Sucks to be me. read more
