I've been here twice. The stage and seating are great, with a breeze from the river. Very awesome venue. However - the concessions and bathrooms are horrible!! In the woman's bathrooms are DIRTY and have stainless steel toilets with NO toilet seat - reminds me of a prison toilet. There is also a bathroom attendant, who is blocking the towel dispenser and holding a bottle of soap - forcing you to interact - so you have to tip for assistance. I have no problem tipping for service, but this set up FORCES me to need the attendant - and that's not cool! The wait for concessions is horrible. The staff are slow and they seem unprofessional and unprepared. The wait to get a soda is about 10 minutes. I waited in line for a mixed drink for 10 minutes before I could read the price - $10 for a mixed drink (for about 3/4 of the small glass). I walked away for the price and that the bartender wasn't practicing professional service. There is another concessions stand that serves only popcorn. Why, or why is one gal writing individual tickets for each box? This is a huge waste of time - you're selling one item! Even scooping popcorn in a box took a longer than needed. Hello management! We are here for the concert - not to hang out in lines for 30 minutes! My tip for you - eat dinner before coming here. And don't drink a lot so you can avoid the prison bathrooms. read more

This is probably my worst experience on the waterfront As a concert venue.I went to see Dwele last night- I'm being kind when I say :"it was a horrible concert". They need a sound engineer- ASAP!! They need to do a mic check for the venue; the acoustics of the arena were just absolutely horrible Worst night Ever!! I wasted time, money & energy. I can NOT imagine what the promoters are going to do when Maxwell comes to town in the next two weeks total garbage. I paid $254 for a ticket for ppl who paid $75 for lawn seats to still be able to be in the same area I was in.

We typically sit either in the Pit or in section 100 or 200. Sound is fine there (The Time, Pieces of a Dream, Brian Culbertson, many others). We have sat in 700 before and yes, the sound was muddied up there. Things may have improved since then, though. Now they have projection screens on both sides of the canopy, which is really cool if you're not close. We shall see tonight when we sit on the lawn for George Clinton--Note to self: buy George Clinton on the first day of sale. Further reporting later! Such a treasure to have a place like this in Detroit. P.S. The lawn is NICE! If you're here for the atmosphere (and possibly, herbaceous aromas) this is a perfectly acceptable section! Burgers, sausage on a pretzel bun, THE BLUE DRINK (Bacardi Hurricane- the same one you get on any corner in the French Quarter in New Orleans!) and you have one perfect night in the D. Been coming here for at least two decades for outstanding performances. I love the acoustics for seasoned singers and performers who know how to work in and with outdoor spaces. The seating is not too tightly packed and even the lawn area is nice enough for a full show. The drinks are overpriced as well as there is an additional bar needed on the west side of the venue. Lines that take more than 20 minutes of waiting means the staff is not full or prepared to handle the numbers for the event. Please add an additional bar or a make shift bar for larger events, to decrease wait times and quality of drinks. Their rain policy is unreasonable. If you purchase lawn seats you don't have the benefit of the awning. You're pretty exposed. Under the grand awning one is still exposed to the elements in case of high winds and heavy rains. If the show is rained on there is no raincheck or ability to upgrade seats. The ticket check was an easy and smooth process. Our digital tickets were scanned and we were searched and finding our lawn space in minutes. The restrooms are deplorable. No or limited toilet paper. The stock room was left open, exposed and had trash strewn all over. The floor was covered in urine and toilet paper. The faucets were outdated and required extended and forceful pressure for water. This is not adequate for disabled or physically compromised people. There were hand soap dispensers, all empty. The solution was individual soap bottles which had not been cleaned after reuse and had mostly water with drops of soap. I felt dirtier after leaving the restroom. The performances make the visit worthwhile but as I age and value my dollars I am convinced waiting for another location may be worth it. read more

If I could eliminate the concessions and bathrooms from this review Chene would be 5 stars, however. We attended the Go Gos B-52s show Tuesday night, and they were great. A beautiful concert venue with gorgeous views of the river, Canada, and downtown. Parking is quick and inexpensive and a 1 minute walk to the entrance of the theater. Arriving we needed to hit the potties and then get some beer. The restrooms make a construction site porta john seem uber clean because these potties stunk to high heaven. Cmon Detroit we can at least hose these out. Yuckkk. Well after that I needed a beer, so hopped into line with about 15 people ahead of me and 1/2 hr to show time. Tickkkkkkkkkk tickkkkk tickkkkkk. The "bartender" was totally inept. Pouring 1 can of beer at a time and pouring slowly to boot, and then going back to the cooler for the second beer and again for the third. As the Go Gos go on I'm still 4 people away from being served... finally we get to the front and just ask for 4 beers whatever you grab first is ok with us. And the response is "May I help you? What kind of beer? ANything I respond just grab 4. Regular or light or ultra light I'm asked. Doesn't matter just 4 beers please. ... You want import or not?....Arghhhhhhhh read more

Chene Park does have its appeal. The setting on the river is lovely. Outdoor concerts can be a lot of fun. Your favorite act might very well play there from time to time, and you might like it. But the sound! The sound! I don't know what the acoustical designers got for this job, but it should have been three to five years! I've never heard a show that that wasn't muddy/distorted/just plain crappy sounding. The sound is the least bad when you're on the walkway that separates the lawn from the covered pavilion, but it's still pretty unpleasant even there. This is absolutely one of the most beautiful places to take in a concert in the country. Yes, Detroit/concert, one of the best spots in the country. I have fond memories of this place, it was actually where I saw my first concert. Went on a date to see Maxwell literally when I first moved to Detroit. What an experience! I have to say Maxwell is one of those artists that sounds better in person than he does on cd. I didnt really think women through panties on stage in real life, but ummm clearly they do. Chene Park is an Amphitheatre that probably seats about 2, 000 ppl? They have some of the best acts come through in the summer, and with a back drop like the Detroit River, with boats gliding across the water, and the sun rays gently beaming over current....you GOTTA respect this place and all it has to offer. Couple this scenery with some of Detroit's finest (and at times its worst), and a few drinks....wow...an incredible experience. read more

Chene Park provides a spectacular setting to see a show. I went to go see Morris Day and the Time the other night, and it was a perfect summer night for an outdoor show. I hadn't been to Chene Park since they used to have the Concert of Colors here, and that's been a few years. I saw Ray Charles and Los Lobos here, and I'll never forget when a fishfly flew into Little Richard's mouth. Morris Day can still put on an energetic performance, too. Anyway, I love the river backdrop and if I had a boat and could afford gas for it, I would definitely park it behind the stage to see some shows here. As it is I just paid for a lawn seat and moved up into the pavilion as the place wasn't even half full. The acoustics can be weird and muffled sounding, as other reviewers have noted. Out on the lawn, they're actually pretty good, but under the canopy they're kind of spotty. The second place I moved to had better acoustics than the first, but they're just less than ideal. But I guess that's a trade-off for this setting. The customer service I received at the concessions was fine. I was surprised to see they had mahi mahi. I went for a more pedestrian hamburger. It was alright, nothing to write home about. I would hope they would have more food stands than that one for a packed show, however. I don't see how there's anyway they could have kept up. Morris Day and the motherfuckin Time! I had a swell time, and hopefully it won't be so long before I make it back. read more

Chene Park is a gorgeous ampitheater that hosts some great talent, especially in the areas of jazz, soul, and R&B. What helps make this venue unique is the fact that it is right by the Detroit River. If you get a chance to watch a show here, I highly recommend it because the aesthetic is totally refreshing -- plus chances are you'll find something you might like on their program, especially since it attracts some great names. Drove up from Cleveland, Ohio to enjoy the Wednesday jazz night out. Boney James did a excellent show. The price is so reasonable & drinks are delicious.(signature blue drinks) I love the fact your view of the stage is the back drops of the water what a beautiful sight to see. The only problem I had was at the concession stand next to the Vip lounge. It's took 30 mins. To get wings & fries with a kabobs & rice which was cold. Had the pleasure of seeing The Gipsy Kings on Saturday night at Chene Park. It was a beautiful night and the view is breathtaking. There were boats docked along the back of the stage. As the evening progressed you could see the Ambassador Bridge lit up in the distance - truly an amazing venue to hear music. I don't think there's a bad seat in the place. amazing and at one point there were several couples dancing in front of their seats - plenty of room to move around. When the band took a break, we were able to get up to the bar area - all the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. At the end of the performance, even with a large crowd, it was easy to exit and walk to our car. We parked a few blocks away and on a nice summer evening not an issue to walk and grab a drink at one of the local restaurants. Will look forward to going again. read more

chene park is the most beautiful outdoor ampitheatre in the country i have ever seen!! it is truly a hidden gem in the city of detroi hiding back along the side of the detroit rivers! it has a amazing splendid view of windsor canada right across the detroit river where you will see yachts, jet skis and the detroit princess boat passing by.. i always enjoy coming down to chene park every summer to watch one of the most amazing shows from the greatest jazz, soul, r&b, hip hop artists of all time! it is a great place to take your loved ones, family or even by yourself! cause you already you don't want to take no sands to the beach! they also have some great food to snack on while enjoying the show and the infamous magic blue slushy! 2-3 of them will get you right for the night!! if you have never been here you are missing out! read more

Chene Park has continued to host some wonderful concerts and sits in a beautiful location in walking distance to downtown Detroit; however, this place needs some work. The restrooms are not inviting and the bugs are treacherous. With that being stated, in order to enjoy a show in comfort, relieve yourself before/after the concert some place else and avoid sitting in the middle sections to avoid the mosquito swarms. The best seats are sections 100 and 400. Enjoy the show! read more

Went to go see Eric Roberson, Bilal, and Tamia. It was my 1st time there. Had Great seats(400 section) Lovely ambiance with the music, the back drop of the river, the ladies (oh my damn THE LADIES!) But be prepared to spend $$$$. 6 wing dings were $9, shot of liquor $10, beer $8, Magic blue slushy $10, So basically I spent around $90. Parking was cheap though, only $4. They would probably make more if the food prices were lower. read more

This place hosted the DSO with Derrick May, so automatically 5 stars. Plus the view!! The night of the concert there was a big thunderstorm and it was so awesome to listen to Detroit techno with the DSO and watch lightning come through from Windsor. I had good seats and it looks like any place in the venue would have a good view. The sound was alright where I was sitting, but definitely would be better to sit by the sound board next time I buy tickets. Only took off 1 star (in reality it would only be half!) because like any big venue the drinks are insanely expensive, and there were swarms of bees flying around the bars. I get it, you can't help it if it's outdoors, but maybe some bug spray would be nice around the concession stand. I'm terrified of bees! read more

I'm a fan of Chene Park during the Spring and Summer months. They have started a concert series every weekend where some famous acts perform. Last time I frequented Chene was when T.I & Rick Ross performed. The only complaint I have about Chene Park is the crowd it sometimes attracts. Once it gets packed, it gets unbearable. You definitely have to be in the mood...especially when it's time to locate your car at the end of the night. Besides music artist, Chene is a nice park downtown to stroll throughout the day. read more

beautiful venue. wondeful gardens surrounding everything. the view onto the river is amazing. its really the most beautiful outdoor venue i have ever been to. the lawn was so incredibly nice. sadly, they have the worst customer service and ammenities around. the bathrooms are disgusting and smell like a porta pottie. they are also lacking anyting to wash your hands with. most of the concession stands are closed. surprising when there was at least 500 people there. the bars were the worst. one wasn't accpeting credit cards, then half way through the night the second one didn't either. it also took at least 40 minutes to get a beer. could have been that there was one credit machine for the whole place. worst set up ever. missed the beginning of the second act waiting in line for a drink. they were selling beer from 24 packs. one 12 oz beer poured into a plastic cup at a time. they also ran out of everything before the end of the night. also, the acoustics are pretty bad. was not that far from the band and couldn't undertand any of the lyrics. chene park is wonderfully beautiful, but its run like a shitty party store. get your shitty together chene park. love, juston read more

Saw two concerts there this summer, Angie Stone and Robin Thicke both of whom only performed for an hour stating the promoters where telling them to hurray up and made them cut their shows short. I will never see another concert here again since they don't believe in customer service and have no problem short changing a person. It was a pity since both artists were fabulous and stated they would of sang for 30 minutes more if they were allowed! read more

I was visiting the downtown Detroit area a couple of days ago and decided to stop by Chene park. This place holds a lot of memories for me. All good ones! While most people visit this park for concerts (I have myself) I usually stop by with a book to catch the breeze. There is plenty of grass space and the smell of the trees and water is relaxing. The venue itself is beautiful, but my experience here was ruined by the staff. The management here doesn't give a s#!t about its customers. I saw a concert at Chene Park for Erykah Badu in 2010 (it had been rescheduled from earlier in the year) and the staff resold our seats the night of, even though they honored our tickets when we walked through the door! My friend and I were kicked out of our 5th row seats despite having valid tickets and were offered seats worth a fraction of the price. It was the worst, most shady concert experience of my life. The management never returned any of my messages after the event. I'll never go here again...No matter who is performing. read more

The concert we went to was good - Brian Culbertson. But the VIP package this park offers for $15 per person is such a rip off. DO NOT buy it. This is not VIP package. It is a joke and I have never seen anything worse than that. Area where food is offered looks horrible, old, dirty. 2 huge round table covered with wrinkled table cloth with wholes. You have to share table with other unknown people. Food is horrible: it was chicken that was impossible to bite, deep fried fish in barbecue souse, salad with old leaves, mediocre rice and vegetable and green beans with ham. Everything served in miniscule desert size plates. Tastes horrible and they charge you for that $15. Supposedly in this $15 included possibility to get into parking earlier than others, but that's not true, anyone can get on that parking lot. Parking lot is horrible and not paved at all. So if you wear nice shoes, good luck with that. I was very disappointed with this VIP package and how badly it was done and organized. Advertizing video of this park is soooo misleading. They show you totally different set up for dinner which is miss-advertising. Rest of the evening was sort of spoiled with this first impression. Went to see Babyface and Toni Braxton Saturday June 28th. This was a birthday present for my fiance who loves Toni Braxton. Everything was ok great seats sec 400 row E seats 417 & 418 until the music started. Babyface was fantastic but it was a little hard to hear some of the lyrics but we knew we were outside so we were ok with it. Well when Toni Braxton came on which was the reason we were there we could not hear a thing not even the music it was just a distorted mess our entire section could not hear at all. Toni appeared to be singing her heart out and was putting on a fantastic show but it was like watching it with no sound :-(. We left halfway thru and walked up to the lawn seats and could actually hear a little of the music up there. What a waste of money ($87.00) per ticket before the venue and ticketmaster fees. What a dissapointing birthday present. I have been to Chene park many times in the past and have never had this problem before they obviously need to upgrade their sound system. Enjoying a nice day at Chene Park with the nice weather, nice people dress up and ready for the show David Sanborn/ Bob James. My husband and I decided to get something to eat... order a Cod dinner and turkey burger. The Cod was cooked soo hard that I couldn't bite into it and the turkey burger was just meat and bread. The Cod dinner and turkey burger with drink cost $19.00 and the food was nasty. I don't mind paying for food that's good but it's ashame that they will take your money knowing what they have gave us. Still hungry decided to get a bag of carmel popcorn they charge $5.00 for a dollar bag... it's outrageous! Besides enoying the music and the excitment from the crowd, I will nnot eat at Chene Park again. I work to hard to throw away our money... they need to look closely to their restraurants and food distributions. I'm talking about Food Investigators or the Health Department because I think one day if this kepts up somebody is going to get sick.
