Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established in 1975 by the Army Corp of Engineers…read more Long story short, they screwed some really cool nature up to build a dam bla bla bla government overreach. Who really knows why they do the things they do, they had to build a dam they say. So now the Ouachita River & the Saline river both merge into the NWR. Supposedly the refuge also protects over 200 Native American archaeological sites, primarily of "Caddo" origin. As the story goes, the Native American indian sites include the remains of their seasonal fishing camps, their ceremonial plazas, their temple mounds, and large villages where they lived. Of course, the Archaeological sites are all closed to the public to "protect them" from us humans destroying them so they say. Anyhoo, that's why you need to explore the world for yourself. It's never like they say in the "Story" books, they are just someone's stories. Anyhoo, there are tons of wild life to see, it's a totally magical place in the deep south, surrounded by teak colored waterscapes where hauntingly beautiful cypress trees protrude from the shallow foggy waters like a gargoyle reptile. It can be very creepy especially on a rainy cold foggy day. Take your boat for some exploring. It's filled with an abundance of sustainable food & medicinal plants, the native Americans that once thrived here are proof of that. One of Arkansas's best kept secrets. Bucket list worthy.

I have visited most major battlegrounds, forts, courthouses and buildings from these two eras. I don't really consider myself a history buff, yet I have visited several historical places. This park is certainly the most beautiful monument dedicated to war. It is also in a very beautiful setting. Abraham Lincoln donated these lands to preserve the history of the wars, and that was a great decision. Vicksburg is not really an easy access commute from anywhere, visiting here requires effort, and this park is well worth it.

Incredible place to soak in a key military battle of the Civil war. The grounds and surrounding hillsides are beautiful and well worth the drive through. Our visit culminating with seeing the gunboat ironclad Cairo. I learned so very much about the ironclads in general and the Cairo specifically. If you are any sort of history or Civil War buff this is a must see.
