Attended Aug24/24 around 2am the music suddenly stops and the host tell everyone to "be quite". Then everyone is told to scurry into the back play area. At least 50% of the attendees were playing. Nobody knows what the hell is going on. It has the vibe that the club is getting busted or raided. Everyone is confused and startled. All the attendee are now standing all grouped together in the back shoulder/shoulder and told to "hush" and stay quiet while the vast majority are either naked or (like us) in robes. No communication as to what's happing. We are all (40-50 ish people) just standing there in a back room told to keep quiet while we wait for what felt like someone to bust down the door and come blazing into the club or worse. Aprox 20-30min passes still no communication just told to "keep quiet" until we are finally told that the coast is clear. WFT? No apologies, no refunds no communication no bloody idea WFT just happened. Everyone basically scrambles to their lockers gets their cloths and leaves. Went there on Friday 4/28/17 We have been there on and off over the years The decor & cleanliness has gone dramatically downhill. No attendant cleans the bathroom never any paper towels . The locker Lady giving robes & towels was very nice . However the strict age rule requirement and negative emails they send u when you upload your picture to see if you qualify for the establishment needs improvement! The older women Monica is very nice on the phone but a bit old and hangs out in the bar / dance floor area When people are socializing & chatting like she s checking is all out ! Kinda creepy! She's the owner, so I guess but it's like grandma s watching live porn . However we did meet a couple that we had played with a few years ago we reconnected and had a Fantastic time ! It's clean, friendly, and the layout promotes levels of comfort areas tailored to each couple's needs. If you want to just hang out at the bar and meet others - fine. If you want to take it to another level be ready to reveal all and have a great time. My lady and I decided to visit Checkmate after hearing very nice reviews from several other people. It definitely is more "classy" than other swing clubs in the city, however it costs more to get in, but one usually get what he pays for. The couples are genuine. People have a chance to dance, socialize and get to know each other before they proceed further. The music is too loud though. Staff is very welcoming and the hostess is fantastic. My husband and I just got into the lifestyle a year ago. We went to a few different clubs until we found checkmates. This is the only club that doesn't let single guys in. It's clean, every one is friendly and understands that no means no. We go almost every weekend and always have a fun time! It's starts to get busy at 11:00 pm and everyone is in the back playing by midnight. They have a great DJ, bagels, a fruit platter and cake and coffee if you need to refuel and the locker room lady is really helpful. Too bad they're only open on weekends. read more

5 stars, according to Yelp, means "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" This place could be a tiny bit better, but in all honesty, if you go in with an open mind and are prepared to have fun -- and if you've seen other NYC sex clubs and have something to compare to -- then you'll know that this is absolutely the best there is in NYC. Is it perfect? No, but close, and I think if I could grade it out of 100, I'd give a 95. I've been to Caligula, Decadence, Bowery Bliss, and the old Trapeze, and this was by far the best (Trapeze was a solid second and had more space, but alas, they're shuttered forever). I've also been to a wonderful club in Holland. But without a doubt, for swingers who live in (or are visiting) NYC, nothing beats Checkmate. It starts with the membership process: You need to email in some g-rated photos of you and your partner. This ensures a clientele that is fit, fairly young, and attractive. Once you've been okayed in advance, you're ready to go. You can check out their website to get an idea of the layout and the swank style of the place, so I won't go into great detail, but I'll highlight a few things we liked: 1. Bar is right off the dance floor, as it should be, and awesome DJ is, too. Couples arrive by 11/11:30 and dance and hang out. It's a very social scene, and few if any couples are 'playing' before midnight. 2. Secure locker area. Some people mention changing clothes in front of people of both sexes, but (a) so what?, and (b) you can do this discreetly under the very nice robes they lend out. 3. You can't go to the play areas except nude or in the robes. Very good idea -- gets people ready to play. Other clubs need to enforce this rule. 4. Great layout: There are many rooms in which to play. We tried out some of the rooms with two (twin?) beds -- these rooms could easily hold 2 or even 3 couples -- but ended up in the big room where 4 couples could easily fit on the joined beds in the back (and if everyone is feeling sexy, you could fit a 5th couple back there with no problem). There are also some big, comfy chairs and couches where other couples were having oral sex, and then two more beds with enough room for another 2-4 couples. This was a sexy room! 5. The staff is terrific. We loved Princess and the bar staff and also appreciated Inge (sounds like "Inga") who made sure I didn't lose something I had accidentally forgotten to put into our locker. 6. The clients are indeed pretty attractive; I'd guess the average age was 38. Everyone is HWP. A few minor suggestions: 1. There were plenty of towels, but I got the feeling that Inge could have used a few more just in case. 2. There didn't seem to be anyone changing bedsheets. I may be wrong on this count. It also might be mostly moot, since couples tend to put down one of their towels to use as a barrier (and the beds were clean and comfortable). And it's quite possible that on even busier nights, they change the sheets more often. 3. The music, great as it is, could maybe be pumped into the bedrooms. We could hear the music a bit, and I don't want blaring music, but a small speaker in the playroom would be great. (That DJ really played some great tunes!) 4. It might be fun to have some mirrored ceilings. But most of the rooms have mirrored walls -- especially the smaller play areas -- and those are terrific. 5. One thing that Checkmate can't really remedy is that it's relatively small compared to the number of people who want to go there sometimes (according to a friend who has been there often). But it's not really small -- there are plenty of play areas -- and they use the space well. 6. I'd put condoms in each room in case someone wants to make a change and didn't think to bring one. read more

So one Saturday night, my wife worked up the courage to head to Checkmates. It is self-described as an upscale club catering to "very fit, young and attractive couples ages 23 to 40ish". This might be accurate if "ish" meant give or take 25 years. There were a few younger, attractive women though it was unclear if they were there for pleasure or profit. The VAST majority were in their upper 40s, 50s and maybe older. They were generally not fit nor attractive. The site says "Dress to Impress", no jeans or tee shirts, so we got dressed up. But it turned out many of the guys and some of the gals were wearing jeans. The "velvet rope" policy doesn't seem to be much of a policy at all. Anyone willing to pay the fee to enter is admitted. As for the venue itself, there's a small dance floor with couches around. There was limited eye candy on the dance floor. We kissed and rubbed on the couch before making our way to the back rooms. Before you can head to the back rooms you must disrobe and then wear a robe (or nothing). The smell of sex permeates the back rooms. This shouldn't be surprising I suppose but it sure was a turn-off. We didn't see any condoms or wipes, etc. and it's unclear how often the sheets/coverings are changed. It seemed most people laid down their robes before playing. The backrooms definitely afford you the opportunity to watch (and listen) and be watched. We played for a while watched a little and were watched a bit. The people we encountered were generally very nice and not pushy though not our type. It's possible it was an off night and it could be pretty good depending on the crowd. If we return, it would likely be with others whom we're willing to play with rather than meet someone there. The night wasn't totally bad but definitely not what is advertised on the site. read more

We are regulars in the lifestyle and have visited many clubs in Manhattan, NJ, Philly, and Florida. I was going to make a list of Positives and negatives but being there is only one positive why bother. The staff is friendly and goes out of their way to accommodate you and make you feel welcome. As far as anything else - the place is just too small, mostly older couples or creeps with prostitutes. They make like it's so strict and you MUST get naked and into a robe in order to go by any play area YET they didn't say one word about people fucking in the front lounge, or the old men who's balls were hanging out of their robes and touching the couches and bar stools where you sit. Or how about the same old fat bald disgusting creep with the prostitute who walked around with his robe open and went right up to the fruit platter with his cock just inches away from food you can help yourself to, stuck his dirty hands in and touched everything, why bother using the tongs they have there? I wish I was making this stuff up but if you want to bang people out for $130 per couple and sell yourself as a classy place then where the fuck is the bouncer controlling who's not supposed to be in certain areas and Hygeine and cleanliness with food out!?!? Lastly if all of that isn't bad enough, the 80's decor of mirrors and couches my grandparents had, coupled with the mold on the sheetrock ceilings just makes you think your in a old porn shoot lol. Take it from me, don't waste the money, 2 couples walked out within the first hour, you can go to NJ or Philly and pay half as much and find yourself in a 3 story clean environment with designated areas for play and dancing etc. Just remember I told you so if you go and have read this prior! read more
