I'm disappointed with my experience…read more On the 12th, I called specifically to confirm pricing and scheduling before committing because I value both my time and the business's time. During that call, I was told there was a 4-week introductory program for $149, with classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00 PM. I was also told that after the introductory period, membership would be $257 per month, with a discounted rate available if I signed up early. Based on that information, I was excited to get started. I confirmed my email, completed the registration process, signed the waiver, and booked what was advertised on the website as a free trial. When I arrived for class, I was informed that free trials were no longer offered and that the $149 introductory program was no longer available. This was surprising given that only about 10 days had passed since I had called to confirm everything. I asked whether I could simply pay for a drop-in fundamentals class since I was already there and on time, but I was told that drop-ins were only available to students with prior experience. As a brand-new student, my only option was to sign up for the full $257 monthly membership. That was the most frustrating part. The lower-cost introductory option was gone, the free trial was gone, and I wasn't allowed to pay for a single class to see if the gym was a good fit. Instead, the only option available was to commit to a full month for $257 without ever having taken a class there. That's a significant commitment for someone trying a new gym for the first time. It's unfortunate because the facility seems to have a great community and many satisfied members. However, having the terms change so quickly after I confirmed them, combined with having no way to try a class before committing to a full membership, left me with a very negative first impression.

At first I thought people were confusing me with someone else, but I quickly realized that's just the culture here. I started with their 4-week beginner program and had a really positive experience. The professors are not only friendly and approachable, but also world-class. They pay close attention to everyone to make sure you feel comfortable and are learning the techniques correctly. Starting BJJ can feel intimidating, but they've created a safe and supportive environment that makes it much easier to stay consistent. That's important for a sport like this where progress takes time. What initially drew me in was Cobrinha's philosophy, and it absolutely lives up to the reputation. I'd encourage anyone to learn about it directly from him. I've been meaning to write this for a while, but I'm proud to be a member here now. This is a great place to start your BJJ journey.

Shoutout to coach Ryan who is in charge of the wrestling for jiu jitsu classes. He really knows his stuff and breaks it down in a way that makes sense. Wrestling can be intimidating when you're starting out but he makes it approachable and keeps it fun. My wrestling/bjj has improved so much since Ive started learning from him. Everyone here is friendly and there's no ego on the mats. Highly recommend.

The short review is if you are interested in learning jujitsu or are looking for a jujitsu gym,…read moreBreakdown Academy is definitely your top choice! For me, any jiujitsu gym is made by two parts. The first part is the jujitsu itself, and the second is the people. For the first part, there are excellent coaches here. The main coach John, is one of the most technical coaches I have ever had. Although I've been training with him for almost a year, he still often refreshes my understanding of my old moves. Also, he cares a lot and will always review your match videos every time after your competitions and help you improve. Here, I feel that I only paid for the group class but enjoy the best one-on-one service. There are other nice coaches here as well. Riley is the nicest coach I know. He is very detail, energetic and always tries to roll with everyone after class. He likes to catch your weaknesses during free training and keep repeating them. I have corrected many bad habits in my free training with him. And every Monday, the young wrestler Ryan gives a great wrestling class that is helpful for jiu-jitsu. Although it is only once a week, it has improved my cardio a lot. The details he pointed out of my moves always blow my mind. Daniel is also a very good coach. He gives excellent basic teaching and it is very helpful for you to set up a solid foundation. As for the people part, I think there is no better gym than this one. It's a very warm place with a silly vibe. People are funny and get along very well and always support each other. I have been trying my best to be the nicest person I can be, and I think I have done a good job. Until I came here, I became the worst person in the gym. Everyone is more helpful, more generous, more polite and more gentle than me (except Austin, he is very mean and will give you a black eye). If you need someone to help you move, fix your car, or even babysit your child for free, you can register for this gym. The value of these people and their help will for sure cover your membership fee. By the way, there are celebrities showing up at the gym sometimes!

Martin is, by far, the best Systema instructor outside of Systema HQ in Toronto. However, I walked away from the academy. Some of the students(including one who ran for governor during the recall election for ca. governor, and "informed" me that Gavin Newsom was a pedophile).bought into RW talking points and Covid misinformation, and I frankly felt uncomfortable, especially as a Black Man. I would've left it there and said nothing. However, after tweeting about my experience(without naming Martin or the academy), I was approached by one of their senior students/instructors while I was out working. How he found me, I don't know. but it wasn't happenstance. Although there was no direct threat made, it was certainly implied. It's especially galling because I was a long-time student here. But, I guess those on the "right" feel they can intimidate anyone now, for any reason. In any case, I'm training a different martial art now, no worries. But I'll never touch Systema again.
