I stopped coming to this shop years ago because I was suspicious of them over charging me for stuff, and today I confirmed a whopper of a lie they charged me for back in 2006. (Don't forget to keep your records) Back in July of 2006 I paid them to replace the cabin air filter in my bmw. Today, on the 15th of September, 2023 I had the filter replaced and they told me it was the original factory installed air filter and it's been in my car since 1999. I'd always looked into this shop's yard when passing by (I work down the street) because they always had cool staff either being worked on or waiting. When I got my 2001 E46 323Ci I started using them for various stuff. I've always found them to be friendly, knowledgable and scrupulously honest (I was quoted $1500 for a suspension job and when I came to pay I was told it was $900 because it had gone quicker than anticipated). Steve is a great guy and has given me the tour of the place and showed me some of the noteworthy cars in his collection. My wife has been coming to this place for several years, to do oil changes, couple of very light easy repairs. This time clearly the car was not performing well, once again she brought the car to this auto shop. She ended up spending almost 3 Thousand dollars, as soon as the car got back to the house, it was blowing black smoke from the exhaust. The owner admitted that they misdiagnosed the car, and fixed a bunch of other things that they thought would solve the problem. The problem was never solved, clearly because they did some other work. Even though they misdiagnosed the car, didn't solve the problem, they would not refund any money back. The owner simply said " I don't work for free, so I can't refund anything." Well if you can not do the job you promised you will, you should not be getting paid, it's that simple. They kept the money the car is still broken, 3k down the drain. Horrible service, and Horrible customer service, never going to this place again. Worst experience, especially after admitting that the issue was misdiagnosed. I've been taking my BMW to Checkpoint Automotive since 2017 for oil changes and minor issues. When got a check engine light and exhaust was smoking, I brought the car again, since they claim to be experts, that is one of the biggest regrets. I was informed that the issue is related to a gasket, oil is leaking, failed leaking turbo line, valve cover and so on. A few days later the car was picked up, I was under the impression that it's is repaired, since the Checkpoint Automotive staff said it's good to go. The bill was over 2 thousand dollars, all paid for. As soon as the car was parked at home on the drive way, we noticed that the exhaust is smoking again. We realized that the issue was not resolved. After the weekend we took the car again Checkpoint Automotive and argued with them that the car is in the same condition, the oil light came on, that the oil is low, the engine oil had leaked out. At that point they admitted that they had diagnosed the problem incorrectly the first time around and at this point it's something else. We requested that either the car gets fixed or we get our money back since the problem was not addressed and the car needs repair. I was advised to sell the car and get a new car, and was informed that they can not refund me the money or, do any partial refund because all the parts and the labor cost money. I understand that but it's not my problem the staff is incompetent in their line of work and diagnosed the car wrongfully. Any business I go to, if the service is not delivered, the product is not what is described to be, or an issue not resolved nobody would be willing to pay, and any ethical company would refund the money charged or fix the issue. This is the first time in my life when I feel cheated out of my money, my car not repaired, and further service was refused, and I was brushed off with the advise to sell the car to someone. I do not recommend this business, it's a rip off. My issue was not resolved, my money is gone, I have to take my car to be repaired at a different auto shop, and it's been 2 weeks, I have not had a car for 2 weeks, and have been borrowing my family's car. read more

Don't take your car here... I went here because of a belt squeal and while I was inside I told him I had a belt squeal and he said yeah you need a new assembly there around 800 900 bucks.... That didn't seem right so I said I'll rethink it. He obviously wasn't all their because he said okay have a nice day and tried to hand me a random key from another customer lol I said "that isn't my key" and walked out, talked to some other shops and they said yeah 900 bucks for the belt and pulley assembly is bull shit. Steve and the guys at checkpoint are the only reason to own a BMW that's out of warranty. I've always been a car buff, but have had to stay away from many favorites as there was nobody to fix them- more importantly fix them the correct way. I actually found checkpoint by accident. A good friend of mine gave me the referral. "He you should meet steve at checkpoint, he's a great BMW mechanic." So I figured it wasn't too far away, and I went by. So I got tired of getting ass raped by Santa Monica BMW and decided to roll the dice a little bit and try an independent BMW shop... THESE GUYS ARE GREAT!!! The lead technician, Steve, is BMW dealer trained and extremely knowledgable. There's about 3-4 guys that run this operation. They are all really nice guys who love cars, especially classics. They stay updated on current BMW issues and bulletins. I took my 2000 323i for a regular 15,000 mile oilservice. It costed $120 including labor and materials/oil. They use genuine BMW Synthetic Oil. It took about an hour. This is a MUCH better experience than any dealer which costs about $300+ and takes almost all day. There are restaurants and coffeeshops easily within walking distance. The shop is nothing fancy. There are a couple padded chairs if you choose to wait there. They are dog-friendly and usually have their own dogs in the office. BMW is their specialty. They know them inside out. ***Call ahead to make an appointment*** Labor rate = $97 per hour (if it only takes half hour, they will only charge for half hour) The Good: Service, expertise, and price. They take time to explain things to you if you wish and MOST IMPORTANTLY will not try to add on unnecessary services like the dealer. They'll tell you want you REALLY need to get done, and then what is RECOMMENDED at some point and the related consequences and potential timeline. I never felt pressured at any point to do anything. The Bad: Nothing really. The "lounge" could be nicer but that's a very minor thing. Summary: I was very happy with my experience. I will always take my car there from now on. There is nothing fancy about this shop but they are a solid garage that really knows their BMWs both old and new. read more

For Pete's sake...it's all mechanical not brain surgery. With every buzz word from crank shaft to fuel frickin' injector, most mechanics want you to think of them as rocket scientists...that without their know-how and expertise...your sh@# outta luck! I've been taking our car to the Santa Monica BMW (Warning! Avoid with all caution!) and was totally ripped off after my warranty expired. $1500 later and counting...Checkpoint looked at the list SM BMW claimed I needed done. Going the the mechanic ranks up the with visiting the dentist for many of us. The endless run around, the intimidating tech talk and the shear hopelessness makes me wonder why there aren't tons of abandoned cars piled up on the side of the 405. Being a former mechanic before I get a lil' leg p on the situation and knowing the guys at Check Point automotive make going the mechanic a pleasure. Years back I had an older BMW and happened to come across this shop, the guys were always fair and honest. After being out of the area for several years and again needing some repairs, I was able to experience their service again. This time I am in a different BMW and it had been at least four years, yet they still remembered me. For my specific repair, I needed a fan clutch replaced (car heated up when sitting at idle, but turning the heater on prevented overheating). It had been a problem for ahile that was just overdue to be repaired. I had one shop quote nearly $575.00 for the work, a friends shop quoted $300 as a "deal" but the guys at Checkpoint, broke it all down and told me the price on the part was $150 and it was a quick fix costing only a half hours of shop time. Their price came out to a mere $207.00 Now, SoCal BMW owners that the find themselves out of warranty, or needing basic services like oil changes have an option other than the pricey and slippery dealership. Checkpoint may even service other makes depending on the work needed. I am glad to be able to be the first to review this great shop. We love this place, the guys here are the owner themselves so you know you're baby will be taken care of. Service is done by appointment only. These guys are pros and you can tell by their easy going attitude at the shop. Both co-owner / Master Mechanics has a huge passion for cars, all cars ranging from vintage to drag to roadsters to Formula ones. Prices are reasonable. Lobby is a bit chilly and dark during the winter. Wish they have a more comfortable lobby area with free DSL service. But it's not a big deal. read more

They have been great and since they are BMW specialists, they usually know the problem right away and it takes less time for them to find out. Check Point Automotive has a great staff with specialists in both vintage and modern BMW models. And the owner is a serious car guy (just look at his massive collection housed in the rear hangar) who is obviously passionate about his work. They also just integrated the former staff of Summit Automotive (with the exception of one former mechanic who wasn't up to snuff so to speak), including Tom, a 2002/vintage specialist, who has probably built hundreds of 2002s from essentially the ground up including my race car which has never had a mechanical failure. The shop is located in a pleasant mixed residential/commercial area rather than a gritty light industrial area like many auto shops. There are a number of great shops/cafes/restaurants to relax in if you're just there for a quickie. It's also an area with plenty of parking. They do a lot of work on M cars. As the owner of an E39 M5 (among other BMWs), I've been happy to see they usually have between 3-6 E39 M5s being serviced at a time. I am not sure, but I think they have a strong background with E36 M3s as well. read more

This shop is really great. My beamers brakes needed a checkup really quickly, they were sounding pretty bad. Also my coolant light was blinking every so often (which was supposedly fixed by another shop some time ago), I phoned last Monday morning and they were able to give me an appointment the next day. It was a very quick drop off at the shop early Tuesday morning. Before Tuesday at noon Chris from Checkpoint called to say the brakes, sensors and rotors had to be changed and said they would only charge about $400.00 which is peanuts for a BMW brake change. Also my water pump needed to be changed and that was also a very good deal. He said he could have the car ready later in the day! Lastly, like many of the 3series BMWs the forward portion of the wheelwell lining rips off due to driving back from curbs. I have had this happen to me 3 times! The dealership charges me about $250.00 to replace this part, Chris told me that it'll be about $15.00 inclding the part! They did a free check over of the car, and did not come back to me with the $2,000.00 of recommended work that some other shop on Santa Monica Blvd near 26th street said I needed (and did not do 6 months ago). I like these guys a whole lot, they seem to be very honest. Thanks guys. read more

If it wasn't for the lack of Saturday appointments, I'd give these guys five stars. It's hard to find an honest BMW mechanic in LA, and thankfully, Yelp has never steered me wrong. I decided to come here to get my front brakes [and the obligatory rotors + sensors] changed. I initially wanted to make a Saturday appointment, but they're only open Monday - Friday. Inconvenient, but they offered me a rental for [between $25-40, can't remember]. Very reasonable. I elected to come in the following week. When I dropped the car off, everyone was very friendly and polite, despite my being young / gay / inexperienced when it comes to mechanics of the vehicle. I was told it would be ready that afternoon, and it was. Total bill was $440, reasonable price, and the job was done perfectly (to the best of my knowledge). The quoted price was exactly what I paid, and they even topped off my fluids. Definitely visit these folks if you drive a bimmer and don't want to get ripped off at the stealership. read more
