BED BUGS. The Borax behind the nightstand should have tipped us off, but waking up with red itchy…read morewelts certainly did. The owner removed my Air Bnb review. He clearly knows about this issue and is not addressing it. I checked the mattress, but bed bugs can live in any furniture or even electrical sockets. We lost hundreds of dollars heat treating our car, clothes, bags...and spent our week-long vacation dealing with this instead of relaxing with family. Don't risk it.

Stayed here for 4 days while visiting my MIL's daughter in Highland. This is an older facility…read morewhich has seen better days, but is getting updated over the last 8 years by the owners, Mary and Mike. On the main road coming into Hiawatha from the west, 26-28 units. Office is smaller than a bathroom, if someone comes in behind you, you have to move to the side, not a bad thing though. Actual keys, not key cards. Lots of cute little tchotchkes on the walls, showing pride in the community, informational stuff. Mary remembered me from when I reserved the room, extremely gregarious woman who, once we got checked in, gave us tips for the best breakfast places in town and EXACTLY how to get to them. "Four blocks up, turn right on Oregon, two blocks up, on the right, colorful painting like this (gesturing to a picture on the wall) on the side of the building, Daily Perk. Mention that you're staying at the Sunflower and they'll give you a 10% discount!!" That's Mary. She welcomes you like a long lost relative, proudly shows you to your room and is extremely proud of how well she has appointed each room--all have a different theme. She doesn't stint on the extras, as far as that's concerned. Wooden coaster sets on the nightstand, potpourri/flower bundles in the bathroom. Cute framed pictures and other hanging memorabilia which matched with the bedspreads and chairs. Fridge and microwave, so able to once again bring in the cold foods without lugging in the travel plug-in cooler. Nice sized dresser, small table with two chairs, luggage rack and hanging rack. AC was very nice and worked very well. The only drawback was the size of the bathroom. Sink is very small, no counter space at all, can't even really set anything on the back of the toilet. The tub/shower has a newer, extended shower rod, however, the floor of the tub is very sloped and there are no grippies on the tub floor. I almost fell down twice; my MIL took a bath, so I didn't have to worry about her falling down. Our original reservation was for three days, she had no problem adding to it if I found it necessary, which I did. We added one more day to the stay. Spent the majority of our time with MIL's daughter in Highland Rehab Center, but a few times brought food back to our room to reheat and eat there. This place has a few cracks and cosmetic issues, but they are easily overlooked once you see how comfy the bed is, the outgoing and helpful nature of the owners, and the wonderful small town feel this affords one. The price was very nice and Mary told me (she gets a lot of repeat customers; company drivers, etc), that she gives a discount for weekly stays, in addition to the already nice rate. I will definitely stay here should I ever find myself in the area again and I highly recommend it to anyone who's traveling here. Cute, cozy, homey--a lovely place to stay. When we first checked in, Mary told me if I'd like to see the themes and layouts of some of the others rooms before we left, then she would do so. True to her word, she came to see me after one room had checked out and been cleaned. Totally different theme, but wonderful appointments and it was clear to see how proud she was to show off her handiwork.

On a cross country drive, the adventurous boyfriend decided we had to try this place. In other…read morewords, it was about lunch time, we were hungry, and fast food chains just weren't doing it for us. We saw the sign for the Sportsman Lodge and followed the road to place (though we did drive by and have to turn around - it's easy to miss)! The parking lot was small but I get the feeling that's appropriate since Bigelow's sign said it had a population of about 38. The restaurant is in an old school house which is totally neat. The restaurant/bar is on the first second floor. There are some pretty neat pictures in there and old articles about the building line the stairways. The upstairs (which we peeked around in) had a poker table and a pool table and felt a bit more like a bar. My dining companion ate something which dared him to eat it off the menu. It was called The Field and was brisket with fries and slaw on the bun. He devoured it, juices and all dripping down his arms. He was quite the satisfied "sportsman." I chose The Haystack. It advertises itself as a grilled steak with cheese. And that's what it was. A steak (not sliced or anything) topped with cheese on a bun. It was pretty good, though the steak was a little tough which made it hard to eat in sandwich form. The staff was welcoming and friendly to people quite clearly passing through. I imagine if you were a hunter or visiting the nearby wildlife refuge, this place would be awesome. If we were passing through, I'm sure we'd eat here again.

The folks that live in this PRIVATE RESIDENCE were really nice when we walked in for lunch…read more...... They bought the building over a year ago and made what appears to be a very nice and unique home. CLOSED!
