Decent selection but not as good as Electric Fetus. Cheapo Records is a music store with lots of CDs, Vinyls, and other music related records. Personally, not my favorite but there's some good movie records at a decent rate. The interior is large so there's a ton to choose from, but personally it is more on the older side in terms of what they have in stock. Maybe not the best for someone who likes electronic music but definitely more so for a pop or rap type enjoyer. Prices are what you'd expect for a record store. Nothing that screams great value (except for the classical vinyls that everyone has) or the occasional CDs but none that stood out to me. Overall, they were friendly when checking out. 4 stars is appropriate for this place. read more

I was headed to Sencha Tea for a tea-tasting event three weeks ago. I was driving along Nicollet Avenue. To my left was Cheapo Records. OMG! I said that loudly in the car. I dropped by this store the next day after work. I love a good music store, especially if it has used CDs, cassettes, and records. When I lived in Rochester, I would head over to Dinkytown mainly because it had a huge Cheapo Discs store. I could easily spend an hour or two looking at the selection of CDs that were available. I'd often find gems there. The Dinkytown location closed probably over a decade ago. I was sad. Sad, no more. It lives here in uptown Minneapolis, one of three Cheapo locations that remain in the Twin Cities. It has changed names and is now Cheapo Records. Its online site still uses discs in its URL. This location has a tiny parking lot. I got there at probably 4:30 pm. I had no problem finding a parking spot. Parking is free. I pulled into one and entered the store. I was in heaven! The selection is awesome. If I wasn't flying home, I'd get records. I didn't want to take a chance getting them damaged, so I went with CDs, which is my default. It is one of my favourite stores now. I added to my Pet Shop Boys (PSB) collection with special edition CDs that I did not previously own. The Release album had a metallic blue sleeve and was remastered. I picked that one up. One of my favourite PSB CD covers is Very. It's bright orange and tactile. It was at this store. If I didn't own it, I would have snatched it. I often can find CDs that I don't own, but they end up completing my collection. Erasure singles are a perfect example. I enjoy looking at some of my favourite Canadian artists to see if I can find any special US releases. Jann Arden is a good example. I tend to own every CD by her, which was the case here. However, there was a Nelly Furtado single on CD that I picked for the ridiculous price of $0.99. I bought eleven CDs, with one being a two-CD set. I feel like this place needs to have baskets for folks like me as I shop. I did spend over an hour at this store. It was comfortable and enjoyable. You can also find record and CD players, t-shirts, accessories, and more. It's all great. I headed up to the front to pay for my items. My items came up to $55 after tax. That's not shabby considering that a new record costs $30 these days and that's on the cheaper side of the cost spectrum. I paid with a credit card. Done! The nice man helping me at the counter placed all my CDs in a bag. I thanked him and headed out with my music gems. I love this store so much. I may need to visit the other two Cheapo locations when I return to the Twin Cities. Otherwise, I'll be back visiting this one because it's awesome. If you love music, you must come here. I am always looking for that rare item to add to it my vinyl collection so wherever I go I like to check out the local 'wrecka stow'. I had never heard of Cheapo Discs but happened to be walking to another nearby business, saw this and immediately made a beeline directly to it. As I walked along the outside making my way to the entrance, I was impressed with how big this place seemed to be. Once inside, I was pleased to see that it was as spacious as it seemed form the outside. From what I could determine, they make very good use of every inch of space that they have. They have a very wide selection of music, t-shirts, posters, etc. available. From what I could determine the music seemed to be a fairly even split between vinyl and CD and included both new and used items. The music is divided into genres and each genre seemed to have a decent inventory. There is also a section a nice sized DVD section. I chatted with a few staff members and they were all very welcoming. One even shared a little history on where they were located prior to moving to this store several years ago. He also shared a story of when Prince stopped in (at the previous location) which made for a nice touch to my visit. While I did not purchase any vinyl on this visit, I did pick up a t-shirt and a poster, this 'wrecka stow' is on my list to check out the next time I am in the Minneapolis area. read more

Cheapo: anything but cheap. We use to love going to Cheapo for their great selection of vinyl records, but man, the prices have gotten so high! Pretty much every vinyl I picked up there this weekend was at least $30. And I know I can find the same records at other local record stores or online for cheaper. read more

Honestly not my favorite store in Minneapolis. It feels like a combination of Everyday Music (EM) in Portland/Seattle and Amoeba in SF/Berkeley/Hollywood, in that is feels like a chain store (it is) and therefor not managed by folks with deep interest. It also tries to be all things - IE, not exclusively used vinyl but DVDs, CDs, T-shirts, posters, etc. If you want those things fine, but if you want used collectible vinyl, meh - maybe not the best. Finally, like Amoeba they seal some of their records so that a potential buyer can't look at the vinyl until they are at the counter - I guess this is needed because they are a warehouse sized space. That said, you can hit their recent arrivals (arranged be day of the week ala EM) in a fairly efficient way, and they do get some desirable vinyl in, and their prices are reasonable. So 3 stars. Have been twice, will likely go back when I am next in the lovely twin cities, which I mean sincerely. read more

Amazing selection of CDs which are a little harder to find in the vinyl resurgence. However they have a great selection of other formats, new and used. They also had plenty of other memorabilia and media care products such as plastic vinyl sleeves, and replacement jewel cases. The prices are not outrageous and found used CDs from the price 95¢ to $4.95. One of the top record stores I have visited in the country. Clean, organized and easy to navigate. Hope to visit with soon, one of the best record stores I have visited in the nation. read more

I found like a rap artist that in target it would be 15 for the cd but here I found it for 2.99 no scratches no nothing like brand new it's the real deal. Great new selection of albums....but there's nothing cheapo about them. Hands down most expensive record store I've been in.

The new location lacks my deep sense of history (remember midnight new releases sales??) and the smell of the former location but they still have a lot of things to offer. They genuinely have a very wide selection of music available. I found their used prices on CDs to be substantially better than they once were (Like they are now way less expensive than just purchasing from iTunes). Their vinyl prices are about average. The selection is good on most genres, although I will say their country collection is shallow on the new end. Shopping here is a experience because it requires digging, which I love. I love thrifting and used things, etc. A lot of people have mentioned the attitude of the staff, which I think can add to a record store...but I also think it's wholly unreasonable to expect huge things from a staff that don't own or even necessarily have a say in the running of the store. This store has a great history with the city and I like the decor outside the building. I hope they survive many years at the new location. read more

I'm originally from the Twin Cities but have been living in Philadelphia for over two decades. I've been shopping at Cheapo (often multiple locations) since the early 90s and let me tell you: this store is a treasure. You don't know what you have until you move to another city or visit other cities and see that there aren't many places around like Cheapo (and you desperately wish there was). Every time I visit the Twin Cities I always make a point to go to Cheapo. And as I have since I began shopping there, I always find something cool to add to my collection. I have found out of print, rare, and otherwise amazing stuff for reasonable prices. Sometimes I find some neat t-shirt or button or patch or something, too. Staff is usually good. The name says it all. This has to be my favorite bare bones music,t-shirts and posters place...period. I love the set up it ID's your genre and breaks it down to the artist. The store is half Wax half CD. A lot of music for everyone ..new and used. Prices here are reasonable but can get pricey based on your palette. This place was awesome and I was extremely satisfied! Being an Air Supply fan is not easy and trying to find any of their music these days is almost impossible. It was so nice to walk into a music store where the personnel knew the band you were looking for and was able to point you right to where their music was. This is an amazing, well-stocked record store, one that I visit every time I'm in Minneapolis.

I went on a record store adventure last year, and I never made it over here until recently. Minneapolis has some awesome, unique record stores, but I always felt let down as a hip-hop fan. Often times, this genre just has a small row of limited bins. There are a few stores that provide more justice but Cheapo does it best. This place was bustling on a Saturday night with enthusiasts talking about their favorite artists, treasure hunters click-clacking through the cds, and some excited people trying to bee line their way to the record players up front to preview some tracks. Loved this shop! Much more of a selection than previous spot I was at, and who actually recommended. I felt prices were totally legit and often lower than much more well known spot I was at earlier. Highly recommended! Tony was cool, and I'm looking forward to visiting again when I'm in town. Huge selection. Prices are a little lighter on used vinyl. I've seen cheaper on the same title at other places. Large hip hop section but expensive for older stuff. The older stuff is the same price as the new stuff on vinyl. I was overwhelmed by the space. And I have up on the newly added section. I appreciate that they take the time to alphabetize. read more

I thought this place was heaven. Until I went to Electric Fetus. Because this was my first Minnesota Music pit stop I blew the most mula here. Nothing I regret. The store itself (on the outside) deserves a standing ovation. You have incredible signage and easy to find. I even photographed the life out of the Prince tribute mural you had on the north wall of your place. Really cool! As I began my journey into Cheapo's I saw a barrage of local announcements stapled, taped near the front entrance which I thought added to the authenticity of this place. The store inside is massive and highly organized. The staff seemed to possess a sense of smugness about themselves and never really seemed to want to talk "shop" or music. I found this really odd! You work in this place, NOT BEST BUY... and you are so-so about a person ready to blow some serious money on your joint?! Everyone has their off day but the three peeps behind the counter seemed already checked out. I would think way more energy or passion would exist here. But not on this day. Nope! Someone posted below that no pressure existed from the staff to buy things. This can be cool but I found zero presence or personality in the staff here. None. As far as the product availability - ITS ALL HERE. I was trying to find stuff I had never had luck finding before and BOOM, it was here. And at a decent price. These guys do not charge over the top prices for cds that are out of print. I respect this, appreciate this a lot. I spent close to $180 here on my first visit. Before leaving it would have been nice to hear about special sales or discounted areas before leaving. Fortunately I stumbled upon these deals as I walked out. I would return but have no real energy to. If I want passion in a music store... Ill go to Electric Fetus. They sold stuff well and took my money well. But that's about it.
